In the three and a half years since Hartford residents Brian andNancy Gehrung brought their daughter, Ava, into their home fromChina, their lives have been filled with lots of laughter and love.

She is sweet, happy, loving, funny, described Nancy in an inter-view with the Express News. She is a great kid who loves to make peo-ple laugh.

The effervescent nature of the nine-and-a-half-year-olda little per-son with the same form of dwarfism as her adoptive parentsmakes itespecially hard for those around her to watch her experience so muchpain from the near-constant seizures that plague the girl.

She has experienced a lot of trauma in her short life, said Nancy. It was clear early on that Ava had neurological issues so soon after

he adoption, Nancy took her daughter for a CAT scan that delivereddevastating results.

Before we even got home from the appointment, the doctors officehad called us, she said. Tests had revealed that Ava had suffered a mas-sive stroke at birth and that had affected 75 percent of the left side ofher brain, and the Gehrungs were told seizures would be a side effect.

A month later we saw her first seizure, said Nancy. It was evenworse than they thought, she said, as a MEG scan that captured picturesof Avas seizures revealed that the affected part of her brainthe occip-ital lobewas continuously seizing. In two and a half hours she had atleast 200 seizures.

The Gehrungs decided surgery was the best option and a year agothey attempted a two-part process; however, Ava was only able to makeit through the first half of the surgery due to an undiagnosed blood clot-ting disorder.

A second attempt at the surgery during which doctors severed thepart of her brain that is seizing from the healthy areas was made at

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte

Dear Dr. Winter, I have spaces between my teethand I have always been self-conscious about my smile.I am a college student so I am financially limited. Is

there anything that you can do to help me with myproblem?Dear John, it can often be intimidating to go to a

dentist when you dont know all of your options but wewould love to see you for a no charge consultation. Ifyour teeth are in a good position but you simply havesome spacing we may be able to use white fillingscalled bonding to close your gaps. This may all bedone in one or two visits and ca n often last 5-7 years orlonger. Then when you are in a different economicposition we could replace the bonding with porcelainveneers. These veneers are thin white porcelain piecesthat cover your tooth and can often change the shapeand color of your teeth resulting in a much prettiersmile.

If you have a jaw that is too large for the size teethyou have, then perhaps crowns may be needed to tryand improve the overall height and width of your teeth.Again transitional bonding can help determine whatthe best solution is for your situation. If orthodonticscould solve your problem this also can be discussed. Itis always better to move teeth to close spaces then toadd materials that will eventually require replacementassuming your tooth size is acceptable.

Dear Dr. Winter, could you tell me about thedifference between Snap-On Dentures and mini-implant dentures? I am limited financially but I cantstand my dentures! They pop up during eating andtalking all the time and I need some way to stabilizethem. I read the testimonials on your website andwatched all the videos and I am convinced theseoptions will help me.

Dear Peter, regular sized implants are alwayspreferable to mini-implants. That is because there is agreater surface area on larger implants and they holdon to your bone better. Also traditional implants thatare 3.0 mm in diameter or larger can have the tops orchimneys changed in order to UPGRADE to a fixedbridge in the future. Mini-implants do not have anupgrade path. That means that if you decide to investmore time, effort and money in the future to have teeth

that stay in all the time, the mini-implants wneed to be removed and larger implants pla

The article on Upgradeable Dexplains this concept on the www.hamptondentalassociates.comwheresee that any implants will improve your The ability to use larger implants will allowlarger attachments that have the ability to hprosthesis even firmer then the mini-implachoices will be way better then usingadhesive! I invite you and our readership tofor a free consultation to see if Snap-On deMini-Implant dentures are right for you! Ma dentist is to help everyone to get rid dentures and move back to fixed teeth. Tchoices are wonderful ways to begin that jou

Childrens Hospital Nov. 3.The surgery itself went smoothly with no

complications, but the recovery has been slowand painful, Nancy said. Im guessing it willbe about four to six months before she is real-ly back in action, and hopefully there wont beany more surgeries after this.

It has been a long journey for the family.Married for six years, the Gehrungs decid-

ed to adopt Ava after seeing her on the LittlePeople of America adoption website. Nancyalready had two grown childrenCollin and

Shannon OConnell, 21 and 19, respective-lybut wanted to start a family with Brian.

They adopted Ava and we never lookedback, said Nancy.

Despite her strugglesemotionally andpsychologically Ava is about four yearsoldthe girl brings much joy to the family andhas many gifts, her mother said.

Because the right side of Avas brain isstrong, she is extremely creative. She loves topick up odd things and make beautiful art out

of them, Nancy described. She is a hugefan of Disney princesses and she loves every-one in her family so much.

The surgery appears to have been a suc-cess, which is exactly what the Gehrungswanted, but the medical bills remain. Also, with Brian undergoing back surgery and pos-sibly missing up to six months of work at theMenomonee Falls Post Office, the familysfinances will likely be a struggle for the nearfuture. The community has been incredibly sup-portive through everything, Nancy said.

Family friends Bob Howe and Gloria-JeanSiegel-Howe held a fund raiser for Avaat

which more than $5,000 was raisedatTrysting Place Pub in Menomonee Falls inSeptember.

It was so humbling for us, saidIt was wonderful, but weird to havgiving us money. Through that evenents were able to get Ava a motorizechair and now they are looking to mamodifications to their home.

Nancy, who is not able to worcares for her daughter, said any blessing. Any donation is welcoappreciated, she said. There havelot of expenses not covered by insur
