    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte

Dear Dr. Winter, when people are searching for a dentistwhat are the things we should look for?

I think that being a professional brings with it a

responsibility for a doctor to seek out and take qualitycontinuing education. As a member of the Board ofDirectors for the Wisconsin Academy of General Dentistrywe try and bring quality continuing education to all thedoctors in Wisconsin. I believe life long learning should beevery dentist's goal. The doctor should find their passionpoints and take education to become proficient in thoseaspects of their profession. One of the topics I lecture toother dentists on is "General Dentistry As A Specialty." Thishighlights the fact that any aspect of general dentistry can belearned at higher levels. An example of this is the extratraining our Dental organizations offer. There is theAcademy of General Dentistry that offers education in the12 subspecialties of dentistry and offers an examinationcalled a Fellowship exam after taking 600 hours ofeducation. This rigorous examination and an additional 400hours of participation courses allow a doctor to attainMastership in the AGD. The quest for Mastership allowedme to learn more in depth techniques and attain a higherlevel of proficiency in all aspects of dentistry.

I recently took parts one and two of a National Boardexamination called the ABOI/ID, which is the AmericanBoard of Oral Implantologists/Implant Dentists. This was atwo day examination with part 1 being an 8 hour written

examination and part 2 being defense of cases that werepresented from a pool of cases I submitted and cases theBoard presented.

There were two doctors at each station questioning me oneverything from surgical techniques, emergency situations, prosthetics (crown and bridge implant techniques) and howto handle complications. Attaining these credentials allows adentist to achieve personal satisfaction, professionalsatisfaction and fuels the desire to continue to get better attheir profession.

The International Congress of Oral Implantologists isanother organization as is the American Academy ofImplant Dentists. These organizations offer courses, tests, oral examinations that allow dentists to document theircases, improve their skills and allow them to sit for examssuch as the ABOI/ID. In order to achieve Diplomate statusin the ICOI a dentist needs to achieve Fellowship andMastership by taking an exam, passing cases that arepresented and then sitting for an oral examination. So theseorganizations offer many ways to engage and test a dentist

and help them attain new skills. The AACD or American Academy of

Dentistry also offers tests and an oral examinatioto test dentists in the field of advanced cosmeticSo while there are wonderful specialists orthodontists, oral surgeons, etc. it is still incugeneralists to continue to learn and improve theirwork toward perfecting the art and science of de

Ever wondered about enterindog in a training class, but hebecause you werent certain worth your time and money? I eage you to reconsider a trainindue to its numerous benefits.

Its nice having a dog who lissimple commands. There is somrewarding in knowing you havewho will come when called, godown when asked, and stay whneed them to be still. CentraJackson offers basic training claall age groups: Puppy JumpstaCanine Manners. Entering ameans your dog will be able tvariety of behaviors on cue.

Some owners see training as unsary because their dog alreadybehavior cues. However, beinclassroom with other dogs and hwill offer your dog a time to gaiawareness, impulse control, anunder stressful or high distractiotions. Therefore, even if youknows sit, down, stay or comdog doesnt naturally generalizbehaviors. This means a dounderstands to stay before released to eat at home will notsarily understand stay in front overy attractive dogs. Considadvanced training class such as Manners Level Two or Walk NiceMe.

Often owners are frustrated thdog already knows basic obecues, yet the dog lacks basic mand engages in problem behMany people are extremely bulife thus resulting in a family dogleft with little one-on-one attwhich is essential to the well-b

Create a backyard escape with the help ofcontainer gardens. Whether youre looking for avisit to the desert, an English garden or tropicalparadise, a few planters can help create themood.

Reduce your workload and increase yourenjoyment with a bit of planning and properplanting.

Select a container with drainage holes andone that mimics the color and feel of the locationyou are trying to recreate. Use troughs, stone or

other containers made from neutral colors whengrowing succulents. The container should com-plement, but not overpower the simple beauty ofthe desert plants.

Keep things warm and natural when goingfor a more tropical feel. Wicker, bamboo andother natural materials work well with the lushfoliage and vibrant colors of tropical plants.

Add a few terra cotta, metal and baskettype containers when creating an English cot-tage setting. Set them on your patio, steps or inthe garden to create a focal point.

Keep your plants looking good throughoutthe season with the proper planting mix. Look forpotting mixes with good drainage and waterholding abilities, like Schultz Potting Soil Plus(schultz.com). Check the label as some mixescontain enough fertilizer to last the entire seasonand water-retaining crystals to reduce the needto water.

Use a cactus mix that provides the perfectgrowing conditions for cacti and succulents. Thepotting mix should retain the moisture and nutri-ents the plants need, while providing the excel-lent drainage that is a must for these plants.

Plant any orchids added to your backyardtropical paradise in a potting mix designed forthese plants. Use an orchid mix that has excellentdrainage and aeration, yet retains the moistureand nutrients these beauties need to thrive.

Check your planters daily and water thor-

oughly whenever the top few inches ocrumbly and slightly moist. Allow cacticulents to go a bit drier.

Mulch the soil in tropical, herb, vand annual container gardens. Sprelayer of shredded leaves, evergreen ntwice shredded bark over the soil surfine pebbles for cacti and succulentsthings hot and dry.

And dont forget about garden awattle fence and arbor of twigs and work well for an English garden settingwater feature can enhance a tropicalthemed garden, and some southwest gcan complete the desert scene youre g

So start your vacation this year witthe garden center. Invest in a few contaright potting mix and plants. Then plant to the retreat of your dreams.
