MASS INTENTIONS

19th Sunday in Ordinary TimeIn today’s First Reading from 1 Kings, Elijah is fleeing the wrath of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel after he slit the throats of the priests of Baal. They will kill him most painfully if they catch him. He was hiding in a cave when he heard a voice tell him to go outside because God would pass by him. Elijah imagined further instructions would come from God. An enormous wind came up but God was not in it. Then an earthquake shook the earth, but God was not in it. Then there was a fire but God was not in it either. Last, there was a quiet whisper. That was the voice of God. Elijah hid his face and went out to meet God. Paul, writing in Romans, is in anguish

because he could not bring the Jews to faith in Christ. He acknowledges they were the people of the first covenant and all of God’s promises were given to them. He wishes he was cursed by God instead of having to turn away from his Jewish upbringing and faith. But he will not back down. He speaks the truth of Christ, guided by the Holy Spirit.Today’s Gospel is the story of Jesus walking on the water. Oh, to have been a witness to that! The disciples were probably seasick in a boat that was bobbing up and down in the wind and waves. But what really terrified them was seeing Jesus walking across the waves to them. It was midnight (4th watch) and stormy dark. They thought he was a ghost. Jesus told them not to be afraid. Peter, always putting his foot

in his mouth, told Jesus to command him to walk on the water. So Jesus did. Peter climbed out of the boat and started walking! But then he thought about where he was and he became afraid. Then he started to sink. Jesus reached out and saved Peter. He asked Peter why he did not have enough faith in Jesus’ power. The other disciples recognized Jesus had power over the elements of nature so he surely must be the Son of God. What’s in it for us? It is so easy to be Peter, isn’t it? We need proof instead of trusting with faith. We doubt, we are afraid, we feel that we are sinking. Jesus always reaches out to save us. Trust in him and you too can walk on water.

While it is summer and people are away on vacations or at their cottages, the Christian Service Commission is still at work because the needs of people do not go on vacation. The Christian Service Commission is a very small group, 6 to 8 people. In order to keep up with what we are doing and do even more, we need people. If you are thinking of finding a way to answer Jesus’ call to help complete the mission He started, as well as being a part of the Mission and Vision of St. Isidore to reach out into the community to serve the People of God, then you want to become a member of the Christian Service Commission. The Commission meets September through May, the 1st Tuesday of each month usually, from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm.Please, if you can help, call me at the office. If I am not available please leave a message and I will get back to you.Have a great summer,Peace, Tony

YOUTH MINISTRY [email protected]

Matthew Todd Hunt was born in the rural parts of Western Kentucky, in the city of Fancy Farm, KY. Matt attended the Carlisle County School System. Throughout high school, he was involved in the youth group at St. Jerome. It wasn't until his junior year that he attended a Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) retreat, where he discovered his calling to youth ministry. Throughout college, Matt engaged in many alternative spring breaks to various communities with Catholic Ministry Newman House by helping provide services to those communities. At the Newman House, Matt engaged in many mission trips to New Mexico, Jamaica & New Orleans. For two summers, Matt was involved with a traveling missionary group called Young Disciples, based out of the Diocese of Fargo, North Dakota. Young Disciples travel around North Dakota and provide VBS camps to small, rural based parishes (most of which were on Native American Reservations.) Through all his mission experiences, Matt fostered a love for serving others and is a well-versed traveler.Matt graduated from Murray State University in May 2007 with a degree in Organizational Communication and minor in Non-Profit & Youth Leadership.

Since graduating from Murray State, he worked professionally in youth ministry for 6 years in the Diocese of Owensboro. Matt has organized mission trips, retreats, service projects, and youth trips to Conferences such as the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC.) Along with youth ministry, Matt has had years of experience in leading Confirmation Retreats and faith formation programs. Through ministry, Matt uses his passion and talents to help the youth understand their baptismal call of serving the people of God through committing to Christ.Matt moved up to Michigan to be with his now-wife, Sarah. They currently have one daughter, Cecilia Rose, who is one year old. Matt and Sarah met online on Catholic Match and God has written a beautiful love story for them and brought them here to St. Isidore. Simply put, Matt loves his Catholic faith, family, and he's loving the life Christ gave him. For the past three years Matt worked at St. Fabian Catholic Church as the High School Youth Minister. It was a great parish that helped support and grow the Hunt Family. Since then Matt & Sarah have bought a home in Warren. With Starting at St. Isidore Matt is now a working & resident Eastsider!

Matt is pretty laid back and easy going guy. Most of Matt’s friends and family would describe him as hyperactive, faithful, and fun-loving. He's a coffee addict, comic reading, music lover, and is also a huge tech geek! In his spare time, he loves being outdoors hiking, loves food (mostly sampling), and exploring cities. Matt is not only excited to begin a new ministry here at St. Isidore because of his passion for the youth, but he was inspired to make the move from the back woods country to city life.If you have a calling for serving the young church please give Matt Hunt a call and he would love to find a place for you in the St. Isidore Youth Ministry program.

God is never outdone in generosity. The more we give, the more we receive. How do we serve God? Most of us aren’t champions or heroes. We don’t stand out in a crowd. We have talents, but don’t think of them as anything special or extraordinary. But we can love our neighbor with zeal, spirit and service. In the midst of pain and sorrow, love blossoms in the form of understanding and support for our neighbors in need. Our love of God is complete only if it includes love of neighbor – love of all our neighbors. Thinking of Mary written July 5, 2017One of the most problematic Catholic theologies for Protestants to understand or accept is the Catholic Church’s teachings on Mary. For many Protestants, Mary is “just another woman”, and we should only focus our attention on God, and His Son, Jesus. Again, as I just mentioned, they do not understand the Church’s teachings on Mary. I would further suggest that those who think of Mary as “just another woman” are not in concert with the Gospels. Mary is the only person, man or woman, who is referred to as being “full of grace” (Luke 1:28); Mary says herself: “…For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48). While the Scriptures speak often of those blessed, Mary is the only person described in the Gospels as being “blessed” for “all generations”. Mary is not now, nor ever has been, the focus of our faith and worship. Our faith is in God, His love and mercy; in His Son Jesus Christ who died for our sins and rose from the dead to give us life; in the Holy Spirit who emanates and animates the love of the Father and Son. Mary is not a center of our faith, she is one who leads us into deeper faith. At the risk of over-simplifying Mary’s role in the Church, I would suggest we think of Mary as a sort of spiritual tour guide. If you have ever gone on a tour, a pilgrimage, or visited a museum, you can appreciate the value of having someone who knows the “territory”; the history, the background information, where the important places are. This person is the Guide. There is no other person mentioned in Scriptures that could possibly have a more intimate knowledge of Jesus than His mother, Mary. There is no other person mentioned in Scriptures that could have a greater love of Jesus than His mother, Mary. There is no other person mentioned in Scriptures who would more insistently redirect one’s faith to her Son, Jesus, than Mary. Mary leads us to her Son. And Jesus, who was like us in every way but sin, would have a great love and respect for His mother. I do not believe that Jesus really looks “kindly” upon those who say: “She’s just another woman.” Mary is His mother! This week – Tuesday, August 15 – the Church celebrates the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. Though the understanding that Mary was assumed into heaven goes back into the very early church, it is the most recent Doctrine on Mary in the church (1952, Pope Pius XII). Many Protestants complain that there is no mention in Scriptures of Mary being assumed into heaven, so there is no reason to believe that she has. I agree that there is no mention of Mary’s assumption into heaven, but the Scriptures are about God and Jesus, not Mary. There are though two references to humans being assumed into heaven in the Hebrew Scriptures: “Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him.” (Gen 5:24); and “As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven.” (2 Kgs 2:11). While the reference in Genesis is less specific, the quote from 2 Kings is quite specific: Elijah was taken up to heaven, body and soul, without dying. This begs two questions: 1. In all of salvation history, who is more critical in the birth of Jesus, our Savior, than His mother; and 2. If God would take Enoch and Elijah into heaven, body and soul, would God not do the same for the mother of His Son?
