Glorious St. Joseph

According to the opinion of a great number of doctors of the church, St. Joseph was sanctified even in his mother’s womb. The Holy Spirit be-stowed upon him the title of Just, thus giving us to understand that he pos-sessed the plentitude of all virtues. His sanctity was commensurate with his high dignity, that of being the Virgin Mary’s spouse, lieutenant of the Eternal Father, guardian, foster-father, and father of the Man-God. No oth-er saint approached the source of all sanctity so closely or for so long a period as St. Joseph. He made rapid and continual progress in virtue under the eyes of Jesus and Mary, his living models. It is no wonder then, that St. Teresa of Jesus, Doctor of the Church, recommends the great advantage of St. Joseph’s assistance to those souls who are desirous of advancing in the science of prayer. For St. Teresa herself tells us in “The Way of Perfection’ of the necessity of practicing the virtues and mortification in order to grow in prayer and to dispose oneself for the gift of contemplation. It was by the aid of St. Joseph that St. Teresa was enabled to soar so high on the wings of the eagle. To those souls who are anxious to make progress in prayer, she writes, “Whoever cannot find a director capable of guiding him through the paths of prayer, need only have recourse to St. Joseph in order to arrive happily at the possession of his heart’s treasure.” (the Book of Her Life) If this is true of St. Joseph, in regard to our spiritual life, in what will the daily protector and provider for the Holy Family, not intercede for on our behalf in all our needs. As a good father, St. Joseph is concerned with

every aspect of our lives, and will not be slow to help those who call upon him with child-like confidence. Just as it was said of the patriarch Joseph of old, “Go to Joseph”, who provided grain for the whole world in time of famine, so St. Joseph, will distribute every grace and blessing to those who seek his help and power-ful intercession.

In one of her ecstasies, St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, beholding the glory of St. Joseph exclaimed, “In Para-dise, St. Joseph’s purity increases the luster of Mary’s: he always favors with special protection those souls who are enrolled beneath the standard Mary! How resplendent does the sanctity of St. Joseph appear when united to that of Jesus and Mary.” Just as Jesus, Mary and Joseph were so closely allied to one another by family ties, affection and holiness, so God desires that we be united to them with the fervor of our soul, fos-tering a true devotion to the Infancy of our Divine Lord, to which Mary and St. Joseph vowed all their love and energies. Frequently invoke these three names in life, so that at the moment of death, we will experience their assistance. Invoking His Patronage

If Providence has placed you at the head of a family, community or organization, entrust it to the care of a saint to whom the Eternal Father confided all that was most dear to Him, namely Jesus and Mary. In this you will follow St. Teresa of Avila’s example who placed each of her foundations under the care of her dear mas-ter and patron, St. Joseph, asking him to be the head of her house.

“St. Joseph was patient in poverty, assiduous in work, full of sweetness towards those who insulted him, and full of zeal and devotion in serving the Holy Family.” (St. Bridget)

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you, save souls! Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I give you my heart and my soul.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, assist me in my last agony. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, may I breathe forth my soul in peace with you.

Our Lady of Monte Berico (1426-1428) (feast day August 22)

(Patron saint of overcoming plagues and pandemics)

The Blessed Virgin appeared in Monte Berico on March 7, 1426, to an elderly woman of 70 years, Vincenza Pasini, wife of John of Montemezzo, while bringing lunch to her husband who was working in the fields. The Blessed Virgin said, "I ask you to build a church here in my honor. If they do, the plague will stop, otherwise continue with more violence." But neither the bishop nor the priests believed her and the plague continued. The Virgin appeared again to Vincenza Parisi, on August 1, 1428. The city was in dire straits and the people and economy had been suffering from a terrible plague for years. The Madonna promised that if the people of Vicenza built a church on the top of the hill she would rid them of the plague., and the Virgin repeated her request and her promises to the old woman. Vicenza went back down to the city and told the people and this time she was believed. The city officials, the Council of One Hundred and the Council of Five Hundred gathered in the Great Hall of Reason, and decided to build the church on Monte Berico in as short a time as possible. The people started building twenty-four days later. The bishop himself climbed Mount Berico to start the construction of the Church.

Also, in reference to the Virgin's second promise in 1428, great quantities of money were received. "Construction was begun on August 25, 1428. The great plague partly disappeared and the church was completed in three months. The Virgin had told Vin-

cenza about a water source that would flow out of a rock in the place where the shrine would be built, and this is exact-ly what happened. During the construction work, "a marvelous and incredible source of water flowed... to the point of flooding the area like an abundant river coming noisily down the mount." ...a place where many miracles and healings occurred. The plague ceased, and the Bishop recognized the apparitions as authentic. After that the region was com-pletely freed from this great calamity, so much so that ever since that day, through God's protection, it has never again suffered from that disease. " (After a century, the spring disappeared, but in 1955, during excavations for the new con-vent, the spring of water appeared once more.)

The busy shrine of Our Lady of Berico has now become one of largest shrines dedicated to Mary in Europe. "On the first Sunday of the month we have an average of twenty-two thousand confessions. Sometimes we stay until ten o'clock p.m. in the confessional," stated a member of the Servites of Mary, the congregation which has watched over this beau-tiful site and its magnificent panorama since 1435.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF MONTE BERICO

O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of God and my Mother Mary, I thank you that you have deigned to appear on Monte Berico and I thank you for all the graces you grant here to those who turn to you. Nobody ever prayed to you in vain. I, too, resort to you and beg you for the Passion and Death of Jesus and for your pains: wel-come me, o’ merciful Mother, under your mantle, which is a maternal mantle; grant me the particular grace that I ask of You [your petition here] and protect me from all evil and especially from sin which is the great-est evil.

Oh make, oh Mary, my Mother, that I always enjoy your loving protection in life and even more in death and then come to see you in heaven and to thank and bless you forever. Amen. Madonna of Monte Berico, pray for us.

Daily Prayer O sweet Virgin, pious mother of love,

Like this Ave rising from the heart. Ave, ave, ave, Maria / Ave, ave, ave, Maria

O Virgin, shine as a star in the sky,

Motherly defend your faithful children. Ave, ave, ave Maria / Ave, ave, ave, Maria

“Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day.” Pope Francis Dear Friends: During the special Lenten season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never con-tributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven’t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of our Parish family to make a donation to the 2020 Appeal. As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised is used to support the ministries of the Appeal that serve more than 600,000 people each year, and our parish shares in the money raised to use for our own local needs. These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with disabil-ities and our veterans; respect life initiatives; and formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonder-ful place to live. But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you! If 100 of our parishioners who have not supported us in the recent past made a $25 contribution this year – think about how many more people we could help! If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10.

Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others! THANK YOU!! St. Isidore’s 2020 Goal: $54,800
