Back to school time already! How the year is flying by. For me, with 3 children (14, 13 & 9) the year is very much timetabled by school holidays. The next one is 8 weeks away!
I have been lucky enough to spend 2 great weeks in Cornwall this summer, enjoying the sunshine, relaxing on the beach, walking the cliff paths, cycling the Camel Trail and this year I have added a new activity; body boarding in the surf - I am even the proud owner of my own wet suit, although I did have to use one of my children’s cast off boards, perhaps I will have my own next year!
I hope that you enjoy this months magazine, please do get in touch if there is something that you would like to see in future editions.

Attention all log burners – Firewood Festival 30th September
Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust manage over 70 nature reserves, the largest being the Idle Valley Nature Reserve just off North Road, (A638), Retford. One of the premium ancient woodland sites is Treswell Wood where many traditional woodland management methods and crafts are still practised - complimenting and supporting vital wildlife conservation on site.
The annual Firewood Festival held at Idle Valley Nature Reserve gives everyone a great opportunity to learn how traditional woodland management techniques create employment and opportunities to create natural products from the wood so that nothing is wasted, whilst at the same time protecting wildlife for the future and transferring ancient skills.
This year there will be even more demonstrations with the stunning logging horses, swedish logs, pole lathing, bentwood chair-making, chainsaw carving, log splitting and log burner displays. Learn how to make the most of your fuel and look after your log burner in an eco-friendly way, helping Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust to protect wildlife for the future at the same time.

Louisa Pratt from A1 Housing attended the August meeting she gave an insight to A1 Housings letting policy. Regarding utility provider; A1Housing properties default to SSE for supply of gas and electric but tenants would be advised when they accept a property
that they can go to any supplier of their choice after 28 days (this is the length of time it takes to transfer a supply). Thank you, to Louisa for attending the meeting.
Regarding the Kick Wall there as been a delay due to some objections by local residents sent to are Local MP and NCC, this has now been sorted and will be in place soon. With regards to the rumours about the filling station at the New Asda there will be a filling station but it will open at a later date. Haworth and Bircotes are not changing the name of the Town. If you have not already filled in a Survey with regard to the local Bus routes please do as this will affect the future of the service.
The Bus Shelter that was knocked down on Bawtry Road will soon be replaced and the Red Brick one on the opposite side of the Road will be pulled down and replace with a more modern one this is thanks to the help of the Town Council, so to all those people who have been using this Shelter as a toilet please go to the toilet before you leave home, it is not nice to stand in a bus shelter that smells of urine.
The Town Council now own the information Centre on Scrooby Road; this is were you can meet and talk to members from A1 Housing, BDC, NCC and the Town Council, opening hours are Monday 9am-1pm / 2pm 4pm, Wednesday 9am-12.30pm, Friday 9am-12pm / 2pm-3.30pm also the Credit Union have an office there they are open Tuesdays 10.30am – 12.30pm.

Harworth Colliery Football Club A warm welcome from everyone at Harworth Colliery as we enter the new 2012-2013 season For the 2nd season running it has been all change at Scrooby Road making pre-season a very busy period indeed. Lee Danysz last season’s joint manager has moved onto Winterton Rangers and we wish him well. The club have promoted from within with Reserves Manager Jonathan Wilson
stepping up to assist the now outright manager Brendan Wilson, Lee Hellewell has also joined the backroom staff and for the 1st time in many a year we have a club Physio in Sandeep and along with fitness coach Ben Dixon we finally have a first class set up that shows we are as ambitious as any at our level and are hungry to progress.
At the time of writing the 1st team have won their first two games defeating last year’s runners up Dronfield Away 1-4 and then beating Bentley Colliery at Home 3-0.
All 3 senior teams are now run by local lads with Neil Pacskowski and Ryan Milns taking over the Reserves and Lee Anderson, Jason Gazey and Ben Turner running the 3rd team who for the first time will play in the Doncaster league.
We are really trying and hoping to get the village fully behind us as so much hard work goes into running all the teams Yet we don’t feel we truly get the support we deserve. Arts Review and What’s Going On September 2012 Hilary Cartmel
We’ve enjoyed a range of music festivals this summer. The kids (I use the term loosely) have been off to several including the Sheffield free festival ‘Tramlines’ 20 to 22 July which had music in every venue possible in the City, now in its third year and with a huge range on offer. Global Gathering where the dance music went on until 4 in the morning ( dance = not waltz or foxtrot) and Leeds Fest at Braham Park - always a fixture for our ‘kids’ will have come and gone by the time Today goes to print. Doncaster had its own free festival called MAP (Music and People) on 4th August. The local pubs in Harworth (Blacksmiths) and Scaftworth (King Willliam) have done one day festivals.
We – the oldies in the family went off for a weekend of Folk at Cambridge at the end of July. I did think we would fit in invisibly amongst the grey bearded sandal wearers – but this was not so. The age range was total and there were some brilliant young performers busking around the site and playing on the smaller and intimate stages. One, called the Front Room, was barely bigger than a family sized tent and complete with sofas and seating for about ten within its canvas walls, but with plenty of space on the grass outside. It’s a broad church, folk music, there was none of the stereotype finger-in-the-ear (and what’s wrong with several voices performing in tight harmony?) All performers wear earpieces and have wires coming out the backs of their heads now. We saw from one extreme to the other: virtuoso performances of electrified Irish and Scottish developments of slip-jigs and reels with almost 20 musicians on stage including electrified Northumbrian Pipes and bodhran to Billy Bragg celebrating the life and work of Woody Guthrie who believed that being able to play more than 2 chords on the guitar was showing off. A great atmosphere and good beer all added to the weekend and in Cambridge we were blessed with sunshine.
Very little beats live music or live performance. There will be plenty of live and local performances in the neighbourhood over the next few months, brought to you by TMS, The Rock, Village Ventures, Letwell Gigs and many more besides.

Ruby & Leslie Mason celebrate their Diamond Anniversary
Harworth couple Ruby and Leslie Mason celebrated their Diamond Wedding on August 16th 2012.
They were married at all Saints Church, Harworth.
Ruby and Leslie met at the Co-op ballroom, where they enjoyed dancing.
At the time of their wedding in 1952 the groom was in the Royal Army Medical Corp.
Ruby was born at Chesterfield but has lived in Harworth since the age of 1 year. Leslie lived at Boston, Lincolnshire till 11 years old and then moved to Doncaster then came to live in Harworth after his Army Service.

Charity calls for supporters to sleep rough for one night
Local charity SAFE@LAST is calling for participants to take part in The BIG Sleepout and sleep rough for one night so young runaways don’t have to.
The BIG Sleepout, SAFE@LAST’s signature event, is returning for the 5th year and to all four boroughs of South Yorkshire to raise funds and awareness of the charity’s work across the county. Since the first BIG Sleepout in 2007, over 1,000 people have taken part and slept rough for one night, raising over
£70,000 in the last five years.
The event helps to give participants an insight into what it could be like for the many thousands of young runaways who find themselves sleeping rough. Those taking part have to forgo all comforts for the night as they are only allowed basic items to keep warm such as a sleeping bag and cardboard box.
In order to continue their work and deliver vital services, SAFE@LAST has to fundraise and every penny raised through the BIG Sleepout will make a huge difference. This year the charity hopes to have over 500 participants sleeping rough across the four venues.
Fundraising Officer Barbara Raszyk commented “The BIG Sleepout provides a chance for us to highlight the struggles young runaways face and for people to have a small taste of what sleeping rough on the streets might be like. When children sleep rough they do it because they feel they have no other choice. They do it because they judge their other options as worse than a cold, lonely, dirty night on the streets. The money raised at these events will help us to continue to ensure that young people across South Yorkshire know they have a safer choice.”
This year’s events are Friday 28th September at Lakeside Village Doncaster, Friday 5th October at The Core Barnsley, Friday 12th October at Don Valley Stadium Sheffield and Friday 19th at Parkgate Shopping Rotherham.

M ayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry Doncaster
To raise funds we enjoyed a pie and pea supper evening at Ye Olde Bell, Barnby Moor on the 7th July. What a fantastically entertaining evening this turned out to be. The Bruvvers Blue were brilliant. The food as usual was delicious and everyone had a terrific evening dancing the night away.
Many people donated raffle and auction prizes to help raise even more funds. Thank you to everyone. They included Jamps Cantonise Resturant Tickhill, JG Photography Harworth, Ye Olde Belle The Vulcan Team at Robin Hood Airport, Mulberries Spa Retford, Yorkshire Wild Life Park Bondhay Golf Club, Doncaster Super Bowl this was a small selection of people that supported us for anyone that I have not mentioned a BIG THANK YOU
Thank you also to Il Bello Venue Decorations from Harworth. At the drop of a hat they provided beautiful balloons for our table decorations, which were amazing.
Huge thanks also go to Bruvvers Blue for making the night go with such a bang. They also auctioned themselves to raise another £300. The final total was around £1700 raised so thank you for everyone that contributed.

Pet of the Month Hello my name is Pixie and I came into care with my little sister when we were just a few weeks old that is nearly a year ago. We were found abandoned in a field and would have died if some nice people hadn't found us. My sister went to her new home almost immediately, she was a different colour to me, as you can see I am all black but very cute and love to be cuddled. I don't know who named me Pixie but I hoped it would make me stand out from the rest of the residents. But its not to be I am still in my pen looking out into the big wide world trying to catch visitors attention ( I have heard that black cats don't get re homed because of their colour ) O K ! so I maybe black but I still have feelings and it makes me sad watching the pretty coloured cats go to their new homes and I am still here. Would someone please come and give me a home, I will be very good and be a perfect companion. We have some very loving cats and dogs, if you think you can give any of our residents a home, or if you would like to donate just £1 per month to our charity please call the Sanctuary on 01302 711330.

Mayflower Sanctuary is currently looking for a Kennel Manager.
Mayflower Sanctuary is a Rescue Centre that has been established since 2003. Its main aim is to rescue and rehome abused and abandoned dogs and cats.
Based at Bawtry, Doncaster and reporting to the Sanctuary Manager you will be responsible for the day to day supervision of staff, trainees and volunteers. It will also be your sole responsibility to ensure that the Sanctuary is adequately staffed each day and to manage the cleaning of the kennels, ensuring that everyone is adhering to procedures put in place as per Sanctuary policies.
We are looking for someone to join our established team who has the responsibility and the welfare of the animals at heart. It is essential that they have experience with animals and the kennel environment along with Managing a team.
The role is full time (37.5 hours). It requires the candidate to work a 5 day week; one of those days being either a Saturday or Sunday.

AT CARLTON IN LINDRICK STARTING ON 5TH SEPTEMBER 2012
If you want to get more exercise, make new friends and dance why not come along to the Carlton in Lindrick Civic Centre on Wednesdays between 7pm and 10pm. If you haven’t danced before and want to give it a try then do come along to the brand new Beginners line dancing class starting at the Civic Centre on Wednesday 5 September 2012. The new Beginners class run will from 7pm to 8pm in the Civic Centre and is followed by existing classes for easy/intermediate. Line dance classes have been held at the Civic Centre for the last six years and are still going strong with dancers coming from all over the region. It is a very friendly class taught by David Birkinshaw who is a qualified BWDA and D&G teacher and has held line dancing classes and social evenings for 16 years. You are advised to wear normal shoes (not trainers) and bring your own drinks to classes. The music ranges from new country to the latest pop music and dancers can range from 8 to 80 years. Crime Reduced in Harworth and Bircotes area Overall crime in Harworth and Bircotes continues to fall and is currently showing a reduction year on year of around 25%. This is compared with offences from April to August 2011 and with offences from April to August 2012, Burglary Other offences are showing the biggest reduction year on year of around 55% and Vehicle crime a reduction of approximately 30% year on year. The reduction in crime is largely due to several recent successful prosecutions of prolific offenders who have received custodial sentences and that some prolific offenders have either moved away from the area or have stopped actively committing crime. Prosecutions Of Note over the Past 2 Months. Following a lengthy investigation by local Officers a Male from the Harworth area has been charged with 12 seperate Drug related offences including possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs in the Harworth and Bircotes area. A Prolific Burglar from the Harworth area has been sentenced to 3 years imprisonment where he has an early release date of July 2013 where if released around that time will be released on licence. Horse Sense for Motorists There have been several reports and concerns over the behaviour of mortorists when approaching horses that are on the road particularly around Main Street, Tickhill Road area. It has been requested that the Town council, local police and other agencies raise awareness of
horse safety in the area. Contrary to what some residents believe horses are entitled to be ridden on the highway and it is required that extra width be given when passing horses, no sounding of the horn or revving the engine or driving too close in any way that would cause the horse to be distressed. If the horse is distressed it is likely that damage could be caused to vehicles, persons on the horse or nearby and the horses themselves. Motorists could be prosecuted for due care and attention if there is evidence that by the manner of their driving that ‘falls far below the standard of a reasonable person’ when passing horses on the highway. Advice has also been given to horse riders to wear high vis equipment and clothing to make it easier for motorists to spot an equine on the road. This is to ensure and remind horse riders that they have a responsibility to make sure they are visible and safe on the roads.

Crimebeat A monthly look at ways to Combat Crime, with East Bassetlaw’s

First the good news – crime across the East Bassetlaw area is DOWN. Yes, the latest crime figures for the year to date show that crime across the Retford area is down by 21 per cent. In Harworth, the figure is even better with crime down by 24 per cent.
This is very good news indeed and I would like to thank you all for the part you have played in helping us to reduce crime across the area. But there is still much that can be done to bring crime down even further and the main message this month is to ask everyone to take good care of all your personal property. It’s quite a simple message actually: “Leave it in show, expect it to go.” East Bassetlaw is a really nice place to live, but because it is such a nice place to live we tend to become complacent. We leave things lying around, we leave doors and windows open, cars unlocked with tempting goodies on display. And the thieves know this – and they target East Bassetlaw as a result. Many of the thieves operating in this area are from outside East Bassetlaw. They travel here because they know there are likely to be some easy pickings. They travel here, work the area for a few days and then they are gone – which makes catching them very difficult. But that is where you can play your part. Scrap metal thieves are a major problem at the moment, and if you leave any metal lying around outside your home the chances are they will have it. And while they are taking the scrap they may well be looking round your property with a view to breaking in and looking for other items to steal. So don’t leave anything metal – including bicycles, scooters and children’s toys – lying around outside, particularly in the school holidays. If you do it is quite likely they will be gone the next time you look for them. And don’t leave doors and windows open. cars were broken into in one village – and three of them weren’t even locked. Don’t leave your car keys on the hall table. Thieves have ways of reaching through your letter box to steal them – and your car. Never leave items like sat navs, cameras, sunglasses, mobile phones, cash and credit cars on display on the dash board. Thieves don’t break into cars for a look around – they break in because they see something to steal. And an alarm doesn’t put them off. They smash the window, grab what they want – and run. And finally can I make another plea for everyone to join Neighbourhood Alerts, the new two way communication system between Nottinghamshire Police and you, the public. You can report information regarding any crime, suspicious behaviour and ant-social behaviour you see or hear in your area. And the system also allows Nottinghamshire Police, Neighbourhood Watch and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue to send YOU alerts about crime in your area, or particular threats you should be aware of. Just imagine how beneficial this could be were a child to go missing. We could have a message out to residents in the area concerned in a matter of minutes. And you will receive alerts about crime in your particular area or particular threats you should be aware of. But you are in charge of how, when and what messages are sent to you, and you can stop all alerts with one click or raise the priority level that you are prepared to receive. NEWS FROM HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TOWN COUNCIL
Harworth and Bircotes Town Council, working in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council, has given 50% of the funds towards the cost of eight dropped kerbs in the Wimpey Estate and Holderness Close. We hope this makes life a little easier for residents, especially for those wheeling pushchairs and users of mobility scooters. The Rumour Mill has been very active this month. Just to reassure everyone, ASDA has confirmed to Council that they will be providing a petrol station. It appears there has been a delay somewhere with the paperwork – details were not given – but as soon as the problem has been addressed the petrol station will appear. Fly Tipping continues to be a problem, though there has been less in recent months. Who is it who thinks Droversdale Wood is a convenient place to dump ten plastic bags full of rubbish? The message is that if you are caught, you will be prosecuted. As for the person who left a pile of rubbish near Cumberland Court, including doors, and the packaging from a new television – well, we know who you are, so watch this space!
I have noticed lots of dog owners clearing up after their dogs when out walking and using the bins provided. Thank you to these responsible people; action will continue to be taken against those who leave the mess for the rest of us to deal with. Trees and Hedges. We have had several complaints on this matter recently, and we try to address them wherever possible. However, where overhanging hedges and trees are on private land, then it is the responsibility of that landowner to cut them back. A Request: If your garden is next to a snicket, it would be helpful if you could check if your hedge is growing over onto the pathway; if it is, then it is your responsibility to cut them back. I noticed the snicket between Festival Avenue and Bawtry Road is particularly in need of some hedge trimming, and I bet the residents living there have no idea their hedges at the bottom of their gardens might have become a nuisance. This Council intends continuing efforts to make Harworth and Bircotes a better place to live. A major issue is parking on the shop front pavements. Despite years of asking for help with this problem, we continue to struggle with what is a potentially dangerous public issue. It would help if you complained in writing, as this provides us with more evidence to present to Bassetlaw and Notts. County Councils. We also have several ideas for improvements in the ‘pipeline’, which have to remain confidential until we can confirm they have been agreed, but which we hope to achieve for the benefit of our community. So, if you have any ideas that you think will make life better in Harworth and Bircotes, please let us know. Confidentiality: recently I have been asked many times about potential developments for our Town, and I and my District Councillor colleagues have been unable to answer these queries. Why? Because all District Councillors have to operate under the Code of Conduct. This means that when a developer initially approaches Bassetlaw District Council and expresses an interest in any locality, it has to be treated as ‘confidential’ until such time as that interest becomes a reality e.g. purchase of land, submission of plans - and it then moves into the public realm for consultation with the local population. Of course you want to know about new facilities and growth, and please feel free to ask, but I hope you now understand why we can’t always answer your questions.

REMOVAL OF OLD CONCRETE BUS SHELTER (OPPOSITE DEVONSHIRE ROAD COMMUNITY CENTRE).
The Town Council has for some time had complaints about the old concrete bus shelter on Bawtry Road being used (abused) by people using it as a public toilet.
I am pleased to be able to confirmed that in a joint project with Notts County Council it has been removed and a new modern style bus shelter is to be installed in its place.
Cllr. Brian Letherland who has responsibility for Highways and Transportation liaison with Notts CC has been most successful in having many of the town's bus shelters upgraded over the last couple of years.
The shelter opposite, which was demolished in an accident some months ago, is also to be replaced by Notts CC in the near future.
