What’s inside

“Norman didn’t actually want to use the Wizard of Oz theme,” explained Bobby, “but his management company loved it and may want to use it for another of their clients, so for the BB5 project we’re going with something else.”

The BB5 gigs are on 1–2 June with support from Carl Cox, Nero and others to be confirmed. We’ll make sure to catch up with Bobby after the event for all of the news from behind the scenes.

Hastings Business student, Sarah Ammoun, came up with an enterprising idea for a business as part of her studies – flexxi-shoes. Not the rubber wellington but something much more diva – a party shoe for women who like to look stunning in high heels, but would prefer a flat shoe on the way home after a night of dancing. The flexxi-shoe does both.

This is just one of a series of new business ideas produced by Hastings Campus Business students, which has influenced planning for a brand new Business with Enterprise BSc Honours degree, due to start at Hastings

Campus in September 2012. “So many of our students have great entrepreneurial flair, that we decided to build Enterprise development into the new honours course, encouraging more students to explore their own creative ideas and get them ready for market” said Andrea Benn who is co-leading the new course in Hastings

Enquiries about the new BSc Business with Enterprise can be addressed to [email protected] and the UCAS course code is N190.

Success of our business students inspires a new course

Basia Lalik Basia graduated in 2011

from our Broadcast Media course

I started working as a runner for Envy Post Production & was promoted to Head Runner then Receptionist. After a year I got a job as Post Production Co-ordinator at BBC’s Holby City and stayed there a year before moving to Steam motion & Sound as a Production Assistant and Co-ordinator. Working in production was something I’ve never experienced before and sincerely enjoyed it. After a very intense four months an opportunity came up to return to Holby, which I couldn’t turn down as it’s like one big family. I’m looking forward to what’s coming up next.

Becki Adams Becki graduated in

2011 from our English Literature & Education course

Since graduating I went on to do the PGCE Secondary English Course in Brighton and have been working on placement in a local secondary school as part of this. Learning about the local educational practices gave me an insight into the area and the course allowed me to progress in my career and realise that I have the capability to succeed in teaching, thanks to the skills and knowledge I gained.

Graduate updates

Jen McGee

Broadcast Journalism student Jen joined our Student Ambassador team in September 2011.

My lecturers told me about becoming a Student Ambassador, it involves representing our uni and our campus in the best way possible and offering support at various events.

The involvement in uni and actually doing something for our campus was the main thing that appealed to me. I also thought it would look good on my CV and would make me more employable in the future.

I hope to work in the media, and for that I need to stand out as much as possible as it’s such a competitive industry. The skills you learn from being a Student Ambassador, are skills you need for life in every aspect but particularly in employment.

Staff and students on the Biology field trip to Mankwe Wildlife Reserve in South Africa were treated to an ad hoc dissection class when a young female southern African python (Python natalensis) was unfortunately found dead in the reserves electrified fencing.

The presence of a food bulge caused the python to become trapped and following the dissection this was found to be a cape genet (Genetta tigrina) – the first record of these as part of the giant python’s diet. This novel observation is about to be published in the scientific journal Herpetology Notes by the

University of Brighton’s resident snake specialist Angelo Pernetta and Mankwe’s wildlife ranger Matthew Dell, who performed the dissection. So, not only can Biology students have the opportunity to study the ecology of African savannah ecosystems when taking the field trip option, they can also potentially contribute something novel to science!

The forthcoming article:Pernetta, A.P. & Dell, M.C.P. (In Press) Predation of a cape genet (Genetta tigrina, Schreber 1776) by a southern African python (Python natalensis, Smith 1840). Herpetology Notes.

Inside Africa’s giant snake lies new information

Alex Tuckwell

Broadcast Media student Alex is the Campus Rep at Hastings.

As part of the Students’ Union, my job is to assist the students in whatever way I can. This includes pointing them in the right direction for academic and emotional support, as well as anything else they need.

Being involved in the Students’ Union is a great way to meet other students and make new friends.

Since October we have been giving the chance to students to use the Student Lounge every other Thursday to meet and get to know each other, regardless of the course they are doing, with food and games provided. We have various sporting events and our Spring celebration coming up too!
