As one of the improvements, The

Personalized Learning Buzz newlet-

ter’s goals are to inform the

school of PL’s progress, encour-

age all participants, and provide

successful resources like the

Buck Institute.

Like a roller coaster train crest-

ing the top of the first hill with

each “click clack” sound, or the

tingling anticipation awaiting the

hydraulic/electromagnetic system

to launch you, the Hampton

Nation anxiously prepares with

excitement and dedication to

open Year Two of our personal-

ized learning community.

Many district leaders, faculty, and

staff have served our school this

summer by participating in pro-

fessional development, research-

ing resources and tools, planning

for and anticipating the needs of

our teachers, and learners, and

cleaning and moving classrooms.

All these efforts demonstrate the

perseverance ensuring the suc-

cess for each learner to be col-

lege and career ready.

Year Two improvements for our

personalized community include

the resources of a dedicated

project manager and PL coach, a

newsletter and blog to communi-

cate and collaborate, numerous

opportunities for feedback and

reflection, PBL support, and con-

tinuous coaching and guidance.

These improvements from feed-

back and reflection provide sup-

port for the five tenets of per-

sonalized learning:

1. Learner Profiles

2. Competency-Based Learning

3. Project Based Learning

4. 21st Century Skills

- Communication

- Collaboration

- Creativity

- Critical Thinking

5. Technology Enabled Learning

Yes, you, too, have the opportunity to succeed

by helping your learners earn a “D” in class.

But, not the “D” you may be familiar with. The

“D” of the Rigor & Relevance Framework

reaches the higher-order critical thinking and

problem solving skills within lessons and pro-

jects.

Here is a model “Quad D” lesson plan to guide

your creativity and strategies:

Project-Based Learning Tips for Lesson Design

Relationships Cement the Foundation of PL

“With relationships in place

and relevancy established, rigor

can be achieved,” said Linda L.

Jordan, senior implementation

advisor for the International

Center for Leadership Educa-

tion at the 2015 Model Schools

Conference in Atlanta. Rela-

tionship building starts the first

day engaging students through-

out the school and creating the

Personal Learning Profile

(PLP).

Relationship benefits include

an increase in feelings of safety,

motivation, and risk-taking

within the classroom, thereby

creating a fertile soil to en-

hance learning. This soil en-

riches the safety needed to be

in place to build and use higher

order thinking (rigor).

Mrs. Jordan shared that the

human brain is hardwired to

give and receive care. This

care is present where relation-

ships between teacher/student

and student//student are pre-

sent..

Creating the student's PLP is

an excellent opportunity to

plant the relationship seeds.

Relationship resources are

found conducting an internet

search using “team building,”

“inclusion activities,” and

“energizers” as keywords.

2. Meet with team representa-

tives as a teacher, when mak-

ing announcements or doing a

short mini-lesson for students,

it gets really old to have to

continually ask, "Can I have

your attention, please?" You

don't need to. Instead say,

"Project Managers, I need you

here to pick up a quick memo

with announcements about our

1. Use social media as a way

to document collaboration and

engage students with technolo-

gy. Learners can use it to

share ideas, you as the teacher

can use it to formatively assess

where students are in terms of

p roduct s and cont en t

knowledge, and it is a great

way to have real evidence of

collaboration.

presentation day."

In Year Two, Hampton

High School will have

access to the Blackboard

platform as another tool

for PL and PBL.

Look out for upcoming

announcements about the

implementation; mean-

while, seek tutorials to

build your familiarity. For

example, here is one link

and another for videos.

Blackboard brings teaching and

learning to life with innovative

learning technology that helps

teachers adapt to new stand-

ards, blend and personalize

student learning, and deliver

new and exciting digital learn-

ing experiences. If you have

prior experience, share that

expertise with your peers.

2015-16 Goals for Hampton High

Coach’s Corner Key Points for August::

Make sure to build Relationships

with your students’ day one. You

never get a second chance to make

a first impression.

Work with your department or

personalized learning coach on

making lessons relevant to your

students’ lives.

Focus on the amount of rigor in

your projects and assignments,

RIGOR DOES NOT MEAN MORE

WORK!

Continuously refer to the students personal learning

profiles (PLPs) for guidance.

Digital tools are transforming essential elements of

the education space. Understanding how they are

impacting teaching and learning will help guide

your consideration of which tools are useful and

how to best implement them.

What can digital tools do for your classroom?
