Welcome to the 2019 Spring Conference

Aloha!

On behalf of the Geoprofessional Business Association Board of Directors, Program Committee

and staff, I welcome you to the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii.

Here on Maui, we kick off our year-long 50th anniversary celebration! During our time together,

we will reflect on 50 years of contributions to our industry and highlight the accomplishments our

association and member firms have made. We will also look forward, building our future on our

history and strong foundation that delivers unique professional resources, programs, and services

to help our members excel and differentiate themselves. We stand on the shoulders of giants as

we look forward to our next 50 years.

This conference is different than most GBA conferences since it begins a celebration of

milestones and dedicated professionals from ASFE to today. But it is still a GBA conference, with

learning, sharing, networking, collaborating, and fun.

Please join me in thanking those who made this event happen:

• The Program Committee and GBA staff for the countless hours they have invested

in this conference

• Program Committee Chair Thomas W. Blackburn, P.E., G.E., F.ASCE (Blackburn Consulting)

and Vice Chair Leo Titus, Jr., P.E. (ECS, Ltd.)

• Our 50th Anniversary Task Force under the leadership of Matthew R. Poirier, P.E.

(Sanborn, Head & Associates, Inc.) for their ambitious but achievable year-long celebration

that includes elements of branding, communication, history, and philanthropy

Our Board and our staff appreciate you spending your valuable time with us and your

continued support of GBA. Have a wonderful experience.

Mahalo,

Joel G. Carson

RESTRAINT OF TRADE ISSUESAssociation meetings comprised of competitive organizations (like GBA) are environments for possible collusive action. Such action would violate antitrust laws (like the Sherman Act and Federal Trade Commission Act) that prohibit contracts, combinations, and conspiracies that unreasonably restrain trade. GBA wants to ensure all participants comply with the law. Please review and abide by this list of issues that may not be discussed at this meeting (unless they are public knowledge):

• Current or future prices• Fair or unfair profit levels• Price adjustments• Cash discounts• Credit terms• Allocating markets• Wage rates• Refusing to deal with a certain organization

The federal government can impose severe civil and criminal penalties for antitrust-law violations. Individuals and organizations that allege harm can also file suit. It is relatively easy to comply with the laws: use common sense and, when in doubt, ask questions.

William S. Zoino, P.E., 1981–1982

… was to be in the presence of the giants in our field. GZA owes a lot to GBA for the many years of most valuable services it provides to its members. While many of them have passed on, I will always be grateful for the wise counsel and professional judgment brought to the organization by Elio D’Appolonia, Bill Shannon, Bram McClelland, John Gnaidenger and the presidents of GBA. During my active participation in GBA, both Limitation of Liability and Peer Review were fully adopted by GBA.

Gery F. Anderson, P.E, G.E., R.G., C.E.G., 1986–1987

... was the development of standards of practice for the geo sciences and the association with Terra Insurance. Many of the earliest presidents were mentors and innovators who guided the principles of my engineering practice.

Richard O. Anderson, P.E., Dist. M. ASCE, 1988-1989

... was the start of ASFE’s successful involvement with civil engineering education and the changes we were able to implement in the undergraduate education of civil engineers.

L. Edward Wilson, P.E., 1989–1990

… may have been a staged debate over the wisdom of expanding ASFE membership beyond what were then “pure” geotechnical engineering firms (we were sort of a club). I was an advocate for providing membership status to affiliated individuals and firms. My view was NOT universally shared by the member firms. To put the argument in perspective, the board suggested that the membership expansion issue be debated before the membership with me being the expansion advocate and Larry Roth (CH2MHill) taking the “purist” side to argue that our membership should remain exclusive. Larry (past president) soundly and mercilessly whipped my butt in the debate and membership status quo prevailed. Today “all who have an interest” in the geoprofession are eligible to join GBA. It took a while to open our membership. My unpersuasive debate performance in 1989 did nothing to accelerate the membership expansion process.

Jerome C. Neyer, P.E., 1991–1992

… was signing a consent decree with the U.S. Department of Justice. DOJ had concluded that our Peer Review program was really a device for restraint of trade by forcing members to fix prices to satisfy their obligation to be reviewed. John Bachner, as usual, was prepared to fight to the death. But since the attorneys were prepared to defend us to our last dollar, cooler heads prevailed and we took the position that “We have never done this and we promise to never do it again.” That satisfied DOJ so Peer Review lived on.

Lawrence H. Roth, P.E., G.E., D.GE, 1992–1993

… was the honor of being ASFE president near the midpoint of the organization’s first 50 years of service to the profession. One of the highlights of my term was the continued participation of industry giants who were present at the creation of geo-professional businesses in the U.S. We all benefited from lessons learned that were shared by men like Bill Shannon, Bram McClelland, Don Roberts, Harl Aldrich, Elio D’Appolonia, and many others. Their wisdom enabled us to stand on their shoulders and carry on their good work.

Stephen W. Cole, P.E., 1993–1994

… was the opportunity to work with leaders from small and large firms across the USA, and especially the directors and committees of ASFE. I was proud to represent ASFE at the signing of an Interprofessional Council on Environmental Design (ICED) Sustainable Development Initiative. Back to the future in 1995. Finally, I was pleased to support the ASFE Peer Review Program and had the opportunity to participate in many Peer Reviews. It was a wonderful experience working with John Bachner and the ASFE leadership.

Kevin B. Hoppe, P.E., 2000–2001

… was the personal impact of mentorship and encouragement received from founding and first generation ASFE leadership. As I reflect on my extensive involvement with ASFE, I humbly recall their support and guidance, which launched my more than 30-year journey and provided opportunity to collaborate with respected peers who shared a passion for advancing our profession, as well as ASFE’s vision and mission. Our accomplishments and the lasting friendships remain a highlight of my time with ASFE.

Daniel L. Harpstead, P.E., 2005–2006

… was my personal and professional growth, influenced by the challenges and rewards of leading this incredible organization. I set a theme that focused on innovation and change, recognizing that member firms would not remain vibrant leaders of the profession if they were focused on the past. The programs and committee work completed to address business and risk management issues helped member firms embrace a future that is always shifting. I was humbled by the professional and personal support I received from the dedicated colleagues in the organization.

Edmond D. Alizadeh, Esq., P.E., 2008–2009

… was the great friendships I established. Those friendships from my entire time on the board remain to this day with so many great leaders in our profession. I loved the hard work we were doing and the great laughs we shared at every meeting! Nowadays, instead of working every weekend to advance the geoprofession, we get together to ski, share a beer, talk about ownership succession, etc. The network of friends I established at ASFE will be with me forever!

PAST

PRESIDENTSWe have come so far. It was senior principals from 10 consulting geotechnical firms who first met in Chicago in 1968 to discuss the issues they were facing. During a second meeting in March 1969, the group decided to establish Associated Soil and Foundation Engineers, Inc. (the name later changed to Association of Soil and Foundation Engineers, a nonprofit organization whose purpose would be “to promote the interests and conditions of practice of soil and foundation engineering”). GBA’s principal concerns have evolved, but the collaboration and cooperation remains strong. Here is what past presidents said when we asked them to share some memories and proudest moments.

David Lourie, P.E., D.GE, 2009–2010

… includes setting in motion the change in the organization’s name to the Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA), promoting continuity in organizational focus by moving from a 1-yr strategic plan to a 3-yr strategic plan, and starting the process of making the successful transition in the management of the organization. On a personal note, I was very proud of the ASFE/GBA volunteer work we did as a group before the April 2010 meeting in New Orleans. We came together and worked with the St. Bernard Project to help in the rebuilding effort in New Orleans following the flood damage from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. New Orleans remains grateful to all who helped.

David A. Schoenwolf, P.E., 2012–2013

… was being the sponsor of the second class of New Leaders. Under the leadership of Jim Johnston, GBA inaugurated the New Leaders’ Committee in 2007 by assembling a group of young, “rising-star” geoprofessionals who were eager to make a difference by becoming more involved in GBA. The concept proved to be a huge success. All the individuals who served on the first New Leaders’ Committee were still actively involved in GBA in 2011 when I was president-elect. In fact, they were so active that some of them became the new generation of GBA leaders.

To facilitate the next round of New Leaders, I took on the responsibility of sponsoring the second class. To create the second class of New Leaders, we had a select group of firms who were deeply committed to GBA “hand-pick” those individuals who have an interest in business management and the energy to hopefully become the upcoming leaders of GBA. The second class included 22 individuals who brought much excitement, new ideas, and ways to do things at GBA. Some of those individuals are in Hawaii for the 50th year celebration.

Kurt R. Fraese, L.G., 2013–2014

… was bringing more diversity to the board of directors and overseeing significant steps in the transformation of ASFE to the Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA). Our name change took place during my term and I helped assure the leadership transition

effort completed during the Thorne and Matheson terms that followed. These milestones positioned GBA well for new generations of leaders to take the association to even higher levels beyond our five decades of success helping geoprofessionals and their clients confront risk and fully realize their value through wise business practices.

Steven D. Thorne, P.E., D.GE, 2014–2015

… was preparing for the transition from our many years of outstanding management by John Bachner and his firm, Bachner Communications, to a self-managed organization. In the 2014-15 year, we devoted so much time and effort to ensuring that GBA would emerge stronger through that transition. Some of my best memories are of the countless hours spent with our awesome board of directors team; the meetings in St. Michael’s, San Francisco, and Miami; and the many days spent in Silver Spring with John endeavoring to make the transition as smooth as possible for him.

Laura Reinbold, P.E., 2016–2017

… was the strategic focus on engagement of member firms. Board-directed activities sent our executive director, board members, external relations committee members, and other GBA ambassadors out into the world! We met with firms where they were, at all levels of leadership. This was the start of our engagement metrics: eight key indicators that fill our dashboard to this day. They keep the pulse of how well we pull in and serve the employees of all our firms. It was the start of a new look for GBA, and we wear it well!

Charles L. Head, P.E., P.G., 2017–2018

… was the opportunity to work with an outstanding board of directors and staff to lend a hand in helping GBA look toward a bright future. When I joined the board, we were still ASFE. And when I left as President, we had fully become the Geoprofessional Business Association. It was a remarkable opportunity to be part of a great, long-standing association and work with peers from across the country whom I have come to know as colleagues and close friends. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve.

Stuart Holmes Coleman (Writer, Speaker, Eco-Advocate)

Stuart Holmes Coleman is a nationally acclaimed writer, speaker, and environmental organizer. He is also the author of Eddie Would Go: The Story of Eddie Aikau, Hawaiian Hero. As a pioneering big-wave surfer, Eddie Aikau charged into the biggest waves ever ridden on the North Shore of Hawaii, where the sport originated. As a lifeguard, he threw himself into the most treacherous surf to rescue those in trouble, and he saved hundreds of lives during his career. And as a crew member aboard the voyaging canoe Hokule’a, Eddie would make his last and most daring rescue attempt. Though he was lost at sea in 1978, his sacrifice and courage live on in the hearts of the Hawaiian people and all those who know his story. He has become a beloved icon and a symbol of the Hawaiian Renaissance. The phrase “Eddie Would Go” has become a popular mantra for those who seek to push themselves and serve others.

ASFE was the only association recognized by Engineering News-Record in 1999 (for Peer Review) when it reviewed the 125 most significant construction industry innovations of the past 125 years. What makes Peer Review such a powerful tool for today’s business environment? How has it helped improve GAI’s business performance over the past 30 years? Gary will share the benefits he has experienced as a peer reviewer, team captain, and committee member, and his insights and predictions about the future of Peer Review. David L. J. Caduto (Terra Insurance Company President & CEO) will share the benefits of Peer Review from Terra’s point of view.

It began with a nervous call from our client who suspected a letter (on state letterhead) our consultant provided may have been a forgery. Thus began a year-long journey into the mind and work product of a former employee who was willing to do nearly anything to avoid confrontation. Together we will journey through our response to this allegation which included: (1) conducting a thorough internal investigation to determine and address the true scope of the employee’s actions; (2) interacting with multiple state and federal regulators to address their concerns; and (3) repairing our relationship with clients whose trust had been abused.

As you will hear, this process was painful at times. However, by being honest and transparent we were able to demonstrate to ourselves and others that the actions did not reflect the ethical culture of Terracon. In the end, we emerged with stronger client and regulator relationships than before the incident and we ensured that our corporate culture continued to be one based on an ethical foundation.

1:00pm–1:45pm OUR JOURNEY FROM RED TO BLACK INK (INCLUDING A GBA PEER REVIEW)

Haleakala 2 & 3

Martin LaRoche, P.Eng. (SNC-Lavalin)

In 2012 in the province of Quebec, Canada, collusion between engineering firms was rampant. SNC-Lavalin was accused of corruption involving projects in Africa and Montreal (home of the head office). The company lost clients, employees, and its outstanding credibility built over the last 100 years. Industry corruption and collusion also generated a new way of awarding engineering jobs: the law of the cheapest for many of our former good clients. Martin joined the firm in May 2015 with the objective of rebuilding in a very different market. Within 3.5 years, SNC-Lavalin became profitable again, and the company’s culture, operations, and business development improved. The GBA Peer Review will help us with our next goal: enhancing employee engagement and consolidating operations for a sustainable future.

Haleakala Gardens 2

3:00pm–3:45pm THE QUADRUPLE BOTTOM LINE & THE QUEEN OF ALOHA

Haleakala 2 & 3

Stuart Holmes Coleman (Writer, Speaker, Eco-Advocate)

Stuart Coleman returns to challenge us to improve our leadership and company performance through the Quadruple Bottom Line. While bottom-line profit is always important, a more balanced and healthy culture should include People, Planet, Prosperity, and Purpose (The 4 Ps).

Stuart will also introduce us to Rell Sunn, a legendary Hawaiian figure throughout the surfing world and for female athletes everywhere. Rell broke through the glass ceiling to become the first female lifeguard in Hawaii, the first female pro surfer, and ambassador of Hawaiian culture wherever she went. In spite of her cancer, Rell embraced a bold lifestyle and embodied the best of her culture in a way that sums up the Quadruple Bottom Line.

The Quadruple Bottom Line approach is about more than feeling good. It helps to attract quality employees and supports retention. There is much to be learned from Rell’s dedication to protecting the environment and the well-being of her community, and her defining the spirit of Aloha as “to give and give until there’s nothing left to give.” You will leave motivated and with tools to boost your employee engagement.

Nancy Watt (Nancy Watt Communications)

As firms manage risk and uncertainty in constantly changing and challenging environments, the critical component to success remains effective communication and collaboration. Nancy Watt interprets relevant, evidence-based research on the psychology of change, leadership, and organizational development in a highly engaging manner. In a ‘pracademic’ approach and with passion and humor, she uses the tools and techniques of improvisational theater honed from her days as a Second City Conservatory Graduate in Toronto and Chicago. Certified in organizational and positive psychology, her highly interactive experiential learning will leave you laughing with insight and knowledge in social psychology, behavioral economics, and neuroscience. Come see why this talk has been rated in the top five leadership workshops at Microsoft’s INSPIRE Global Conference for the past four years. Nancy is a regular at ASCE, Society of Women Engineers, and Engineers Without Borders, delivering STEMpathy, insight, and engagement.

9:05am–9:50amTERM LIMITS FOR LEADERS: STRATEGICALLY PLANNING A LEADERSHIP TRANSITION

Haleakala 2 & 3

William E. Hadge, P.E. (GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc.)

One of the most important decisions any firm makes is who will lead and how long they will lead. Every firm handles this differently. This is the story of how Bill’s six-year term as President/CEO came about in 2013, and the impact of it on the company’s employees, strategic planning, and operations; and the smooth transition that was completed on March 1, 2019.

9:50am–10:35amPERCEPTION IS REALITY: THE IMPACT OF YOUR CORPORATE CULTURE

Haleakala 2 & 3

Helen Pappas, CHMM (Gannett Fleming, Inc.)

Victor S. Barchers, P.E. (Kleinfelder, Inc.)

We say company culture is critical, but what is it? How is it defined? (Is it the company’s values, traditions, or an ever-changing attitude of the current management team?) How does your company culture – or the perception of it – affect your ability to win work, recruit top talent, and retain your best staff? The internet has transformed the way we access employer information including benefits, salary equity, diversity, gender ratios, age ratios, environmental responsibility, ethics, and employee satisfaction. And it turns perception into reality.

A strategy focused on positive company culture, alignment with marketplace values, and reinforcement of the message to employees, clients, the supply chain, and the local and global community can help to ensure your company’s cultural reality is the perception.

10:35am–10:50am NETWORKING BREAK

Haleakala Gardens 2

10:50am–11:35amBEING NOSTRADAMUS: FORECASTING THE FUTURE FOR BUSINESS SUCCESS

Haleakala 2 & 3

Guy Marcozzi, P.E. (Duffield Associates, Inc.)

You don’t need to outrun the lion; just the other guy. If we ignore thinking about the future or, worse yet, assume that tomorrow will be just like yesterday, then we will be just like everyone else. Contemplating the future is hard stuff.

As business leaders we need to balance worrying about how to take advantage of today’s good times and not overexposing our firms to risk and exacerbating conditions during the next (inevitable) downturn. If we keep going full steam ahead, will we overleverage ourselves and implode under the stress of a downturn? If we pull back too early, will we miss out on good opportunities?

Be like Nostradamus with practical tools to see into your business’s future, recognize the early signs of market inversions, give you time to pivot in your business strategy faster than your competitors, and track macro and micro economic trends. Then, take the actions needed based on your forecast of what lies ahead.
