Protecting Your (Digital) Valuables

Most people have experienced that uneasy feeling when they lose something valuable: a ring, a phone,

money, even a credit card. But how would you feel if you woke up one day to find that you’d lost your entire library of photos, videos or the digital music library you’d spent so much time—and money—creating? It could happen. In fact, if you ask the experts, it will happen. All computers will fail eventually. So what can you do about it? Digital storage devices such as hard drives from Western Digital (WD) are one solution that provides great value and reliability. In a recent survey, nearly 55 percent of consumers said they do not back up or protect the digital content on their computer because either they don’t know how or think it’s too difficult. What makes this statistic more interesting is that nearly 60 percent of the same survey participants said they would miss their computers and its contents most if lost or stolen. Today, the process of backing up important data on your computer is a simple plug-and-play process, so why take the risk? There are a variety of inexpensive, reliable and easy-to-use solutions that are available to suit your lifestyle. For active and mobile consumers, the My Passport portable drives by WD are an

ideal solution, small enough to fit in your pocket but large enough to store and protect thousands of photos, dozens of movies and your entire music library. My Book external hard drives offer larger capacities (up to 3 terabytes), sit on your

INDIANAPOLIS - World leaders Sanya Richards-Ross and Tianna Madison along with reigning world champion Jenny Simp-son highlight strong fi elds in the women’s running events at the USA Indoor Track &

Field Championships February 25-26 at the Al-buquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. The fourth and fi nal stop on the indoor Visa Championship Series, the meet will be broadcast on ESPN on Sunday, February 26, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Eastern. Spots will be on the line for Team USA for the World Indoor Championships, which

will be held March 9-11 in Istanbul, Turkey. You can also tune in via a live webcast on www.usatf.org provided in partnership with Runner-Space on Saturday from 4:30-8:20 p.m. and Sun-day from 12:00-4:10 p.m. mountain time. The webcast will feature full coverage of Saturday’s events including the men’s and women’s 3,000m races, and select events on Sunday. With the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau, the New Mexico Sports Authority, Uni-versity of New Mexico, the city of Albuquerque and USATF New Mexico all as offi cial hosts, this is the third consecutive year the Albuquerque

Convention Center has hosted the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

World leader Madison taking it to the track Madison is best known for sprinting down the long jump runway, but this year the 2005 world long jump champion is turning heads with her times on the track. Madison owns three of the four fastest times in the world this year. At the USATF Classic, Madison ran the world leader in the prelims and came back to improve it again in the fi nals to 7.02. But Madison will have to fi ght to claim her fi rst USA title on the track. Reigning indoor champion Alex Anderson and two-time in-door champion Me’Lisa Barber are two of the top challengers along with 2006 World Indoor silver medalist Lauryn Williams.

Richards-Ross on a roll While Richards-Ross struggled with ups and downs in 2011, she has been on a winning streak so far for 2012. In her fi rst season of indoor com-petition since 2006, Richards-Ross has been vic-torious in all three races she has entered this year, including running the world leading time of 50.89 with her win at the Millrose Games. The top chal-lenger will be Dee Dee Trotter, who sits at No. 2 on the U.S. list and is also undefeated for the year. Trotter picked up a win earlier in the Visa Championship Series with her win in the 300m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. Natasha Hastings will also be looking for the win as she looks to defend her 2011 indoor title.

Simpson defends double Reigning 1500m world champion Jenny Simp-son is entered in both the 1500m and 3,000m. At last year’s edition of the Indoor Championships, Simpson successfully completed the double to win both national titles. Simpson recently won the 1500m at the Millrose Games to garner the top seed time of the fi eld at 4:07:27. Simpson’s top challenger in the 1500m will be Brenda Martinez, who has been on a roll this indoor season after winning the U.S. Open and fi nishing as the top American at the USATF Classic. In the 3,000m, Simpson will face Sara Hall who has fi nished as the USA Indoor runner up the past three times in this event. Hall has recent wins un-der her belt with the USA Cross Country title and the Pan Am Games steeplechase title. In other events, Kristi Castlin is the top entrant in the women’s 60m hurdles with reigning world champion Lolo Jones unable to compete due to a hamstring injury. The women’s 800m should be a close battle with Phoebe Wright, Erica Moore and Latavia Thomas all entered with marks under 2:03. In the women’s 3,000m race walk, the two-time defending USA Indoor champion Maria Mi-chta will face veteran Joanne Dow who has fi ve USA Indoor titles to her name. For more information on the USA Indoor Cham-pionships, the Visa Championships Series or USA Track & Field visit www.VisaChampionship-Series.com and www.usatf.org.

C o m m e n t a r yWhen Does It Make Sense To Go To The

Emergency Room?

Everyone has a story about a long night spent in the emergency room—the wait, the plastic chairs and the

more urgent emergencies that skip ahead of your place in line. Patients, employers and insurers are beginning to question if the ER is always the best choice for every ailment. Until more recently, the ER was the only place to go for medical care after doctors’ offices closed for the day. Today, thousands of urgent care, walk-in clinics and retail health clinics operate nation-ally to help fill the void and care for patients who need minor medical attention. A RAND Corp study says about 17 percent of all visits to hospital emergency departments nationally could potentially be treated at retail medical clinics or urgent care cen-ters for an estimated savings of $4.4 billion. Customers can see savings in the form of lower co-pays, which range from $100 to $200 for the ER, compared with $10 to $40 for retail health clinics, walk-in clin-ics and urgent care centers. For example, emergency room charges reported by one insurance company show them averaging $580 to treat strep throat, compared with $90 at urgent care centers and $40 at retail health clinics. Health insurers and self-insured companies also absorb many of these costs, but they can play a role in impacting premiums for members. The affiliated health plans of one health benefits company, WellPoint, have put together an easy-to-use online education program to help

• Know where your local retail health clinic or urgent care center is located and its hours; • Call a nurses’ hotline or the num-ber on the back of your insurance card to find out if your condition can be treated at a retail health clinic or an urgent care center; • Know your co-pay for ER visits and whether you pay co-insurance for services during those visits.

-NAPSI

consumers find the closest partici-pating ER alternatives in their states. Members find the Web page by plugging in their health plan name and “urgent care” into online search engines. The Web page provides information on when it’s appropriate to use these alternatives and rein-forces when it’s the right time to go to the emergency room. “Current data show that the high-est rates of avoidable ER use are among people 34 and younger—those who are less likely to have

a primary care physician but more likely to be technology consumers,” said Dr. Manish Oza, a WellPoint medical director and ER doctor who helped develop the program. “We developed Google Maps in the states where our affiliated health plans are located and create online advertis-ing because that’s where so many people go for information when they’re deciding whether to go to the ER or not.” The best way to be prepared for making these decisions is to:
