To help protect yourself when buying a used car, watch out for curbstoners.

What Are Curbstoners?

These are people who sell cars that don’t belong to them, many from scrap yards or towing impounds. They pose as private sellers but are actually unlicensed dealers. This practice is illegal in most states and goes around many of the safeguards that are in place to protect used-car buyers. By some estimates, as many as one in 10 car advertisements on popular websites may be by curbstoners. So be careful, because often, such cars come with hidden problems.

Three Steps To Saving In Style At Home

Both parents and children know that anytime of year can be the right time to look for ways to save—and getting ready to go back to school

is no exception. According to a recent survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, eight out of 10 back-to-school shoppers plan to cut back on spending or purchase items on sale. While finding the biggest and best deals on supplies is one way to save, another way parents can trim costs—and do it in style—is by cutting hair at home. Home haircutting not only helps to cut costs during the back-to-school season, it also can save the average family of four up to $500 annually. Here are three steps to saving in style with home haircutting: 1. Select a style, any style: Today’s home haircutting tools cater to a variety of styles and lengths. So whether the choice is short and messy like some of today’s teen heartthrobs or long and side-swept like one notable pop icon, re-creating these looks can be done. For ideas, go online and search photos of your favorite musicians or athletes. 2. Get clipping: After selecting the style, invest in a set of quality hair clippers. Newer options, such as the Lithium Ion Clipper from Wahl, offer the convenience of anywhere use and come with a host of guide combs for achieving different lengths.

When using clippers, a good rule of thumb is to start at the back of the neck and move in upwards strokes toward the middle of the head. Next, cut the top, moving front to back. Finally, blend the middle and use a detailer to clean up the neck, sideburns and ears. 3. Apply the finishing touch: Once the cut is complete, it’s time to finish the look with styling products. Make sure to consider the hair type and style when making a selection—and remember to use only the amount needed. Gels and pomades offer styling variety ranging from light to stiff hold, although gels are best suited for curlier hair. Mousse works best for thin, fine hair. The U.S. Department Of Labor Is Here To Help

As you are well aware, a great deal of the energy and attention in this country is focused on

creating jobs. As the Secretary of Labor, this challenge is foremost on my mind. But creating jobs is only part of the puzzle. By 2020, 17 of the 30 fastest-growing occupations will require a postsecondary certificate or degree. In fact, employers are actively looking to fill nearly 4 million job openings in America right now. So we have to do more to help you get the specific skills local employers want to see from day one. On Labor Day 2012 and every day, my No.1 priority is to help those looking for work, get the training they need for good-paying careers. Here are a few tips: • Not sure where to begin? Get to know your local American Job Center. These nearly 3,000 “one-stop-shops” are a part of a nationwide network where you can work with employment professionals to update your resume, strengthen interview skills and find companies looking to hire. Find your local center by visiting CareerOneStop.org. • Looking for a fresh start? Check out MySkillsMyFuture.org to explore different careers that build off of your

existing skills, connect you to free training programs and even find local employers looking to hire. The site will also tell you how much different jobs pay near you or across the country, as well as the additional skills you’ll need to succeed. • Not sure what career is right for you? Visit MyNextMove.org to find the job that’s the perfect fit. You can fill out a questionnaire listing your interests and abilities, and get suggestions for different employment paths in more than 900 careers. It will

Portable generators can be a powerful tool during a natural disaster or emergency. How-

ever, they can also be dangerous—even deadly—if not installed and operated safely.

That’s the word from experts who say safety hazards include carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, electric shock or electrocution, and fires. There were 542 generator-related CO deaths between 1999 and 2009, according to the U.S. Con-sumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Eighty-five percent of these deaths occurred in and around the home.

To help keep you and your family safe from generator-related hazards, here are some tips from the Electri-cal Safety Foundation International (ESFI):

• ESFI recommends that generators be installed by qualified, licensed electricians.

• Do not connect a generator directly

to household wiring without the use of a transfer switch that keeps power from back-feeding into the power lines.

• Make sure your home has either a battery-operated or battery backup CO alarm. Test the batteries month-ly.

• Never operate a generator inside your home or in any other even-partially enclosed space. Opening doors and windows or using fans for ventilation will not prevent CO from building up.

• Locate the generator as far from the house as possible, away from doors, windows and vents. Keep the generator a safe distance from your neighbors’ homes as well.

• Do not operate the generator in wet conditions or where there is standing water. Use the generator on a dry surface under an open, cano-py-like structure.

• Make sure not to overload the

Safe Ways To Generate Power During An Outagegenerator. Keep the electrical load to no more than the generator’s recom-mended wattage.

• Plug appliances directly into the generator or use a heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cord.

• Turn off all appliances powered by the generator before shutting it down.

• Always turn the generator off and let it cool down before adding more fuel.

also show you local apprenticeship and certificate programs to help you get a job in high-growth industries. • Are you a veteran? My Next Move for Vets is just for you. Enter your military occupation code and this site can help translate your military skills to match them up with those needed to fill civilian jobs. If you’re a post-9/11 era veteran, you can also download a Veterans Gold Card at DOL.gov/VETS to access additional services from your local American Job Center. • Don’t have Internet access at home? We’ve partnered with local libraries all around the country to make sure that you always have a place to log on to our online resources. Most American Job Centers offer free access for those looking for a job, too. • Have more questions? Call us. You can reach our toll-free helpline at (866) 4-USA-DOL for the most up to date resources. Nearly 160,000 people do it each month. Make no mistake, the American workforce is back on track. Every day Americans are going back to work. At the U.S. Department of Labor, our role is to help make that process easier. And we won’t rest until every American who wants a job can find one. The Hon. Hilda L. Solis is the U.S. Secretary of Labor. --NAPSI

• Keep children away from generators at all times.

• Remember that a generator is a temporary power source. Use it only when necessary to power essen-tial equipment or appliances.

Understanding the dangers associ-ated with portable generators and practicing good safety habits could save your life. For more information about electrical safety during storms and natural disasters, visit www.electrical-safety.org.
