A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE
Millions of Christians around the world celebrate the
Resurrection today. It all began simply on the first
Easter with one person telling another: “Mary told Peter”
and “they believed.” Faith is passed one person to
another; it is caught, not taught and parents are the
most effective persons to pass faith to their children.

WORD OF LIFE!!
Apr. 21: What a coincidence that this year Easter (Apr.
21) and Earth Day (Apr. 22) are only one day apart.
Easter reminds Christians of the resurrection - that the
death of the body is not the end of the world. Earth Day
reminds us all that we humans have a duty to protect
our little part of the world - planet Earth. Hmmm.

We can easily forget how significant the truth
really is. It is the solution to the greatest mystery that
mankind has ever faced. And only Christ has revealed
it to us. Only Christians know for sure what comes after
death.
Marie and Pierre Curie were two of the most
brilliant scientific minds in the world during the early
modern period. In 1903 they received the Nobel Prize
in physics for their groundbreaking work on
radioactivity. In 1906 Pierre died tragically in a street
accident. Marie was wild with grief.
Every day she wrote in her diary a message to her
departed husband.
One day she wrote:
Your coffin was closed and I could see you no more.
They came to get you, a sad company. We saw you go
down into the deep hole. Then the dreadful procession
of people that wanted to take us away. Jack and I
resisted. We wanted to see everything to the end.
They filled the grave and put flowers on it. Everything is
over. Pierre is sleeping in his last sleep beneath the
earth.
It is the end of everything, everything, everything!
No, science, as such, does not have the answer. The
answer must come from the other side, God's side.
It comes from the life and lips of the Man of Galilee. Into
the darkness of death He brings light.
Into the midst of our doubts He comes with His voice of
promise: "I am the resurrection and the life, he who
believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and
whoever lives and believes in me shall never die."
We have greater wisdom than the science of this world
can give.
We know what comes next! Christ has told us,
Christ has shown us. This is our hope; this is the joy of
Easter.

The Easter Lamb
Of all Easter symbols, the lamb is probably the most strongly Christian. Other than the fact that
lambs are young animals born in springtime, it has no strong ties to pagan traditions.
The lamb comes from the Jewish Passover, where each family killed a lamb as a sacrifice.
When Christ became the Passover Lamb for everyone, the lamb became a symbol for His sacrifice.
John 1:29 - "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the
sin of the world!"
1 Peter 1:18-21 - "For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were
redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious
blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but
was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the
dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God."
Easter Lilies
The Easter lily is another new addition to Easter celebrations. Throughout the years, painters
and sculptors used the white Madonna lily to symbolize purity and innocence, frequently
referring to Mary. This lily doesn’t force well, so nurseries couldn’t
get the flower to bloom in time for Easter.
The white Easter lily symbolizes purity and honesty.
Some say Easter lilies proliferated in the Garden of Gethsemane, where
Jesus wept in the last hours before Judas’ betrayal.
According to some legends, the significance of the Easter lily goes back even further to the pure white
lilies that sprouted from Eve’s repentant tears after she and Adam were cast from Paradise.
The Easter lily was brought from Bermuda to Philadelphia during the 1880s by Mrs. Thomas Sargent.
A local nursery owner spotted them and, impressed with their ability to grow in time
for the Easter season, introduced them to a public clamoring for spring blooms.
Origin and history of Easter Eggs
Eggs have always been revered as a symbol of life. Ancient cultures, like that of the Hindus,
Persians, Egyptians and Phoenicians, believed that our world originated from a large egg.
During spring time, most ancient cultures celebrated spring festivals by gifting and eating dyed eggs. Even in folklore,
eggs are sacred.
Like most other symbols of Easter, decorated eggs came down from pre-Christian traditions. It
is not difficult to understand why though. Easter, the festival remembering and celebrating the
resurrection of Christ, coincides with the March Equinox, which is springtime in most parts of the
world. Also, resurrection or rebirth has to primarily do with life.
The Easter egg symbolizes the tomb of Jesus from where he arose, in new light and new life.
Another possible reason for the egg to have become such an integral part of Easter can be
connected to Lent. While observing Lent, many regions forbade the consumption of eggs. Since
Easter succeeds Lent, eggs could well have been considered to be a delicacy owing to the prohibition.
Either way, Early Christians decided to include eggs while celebrating Easter. Initially, eggs were presented at the
church to be blessed and sprinkled with holy water. Later, eggs were decorated with gold leaf and sent as gifts to the
Royal family. Gradually, people began to dye eggs in bright colors like red (to signify life and the blood of Jesus) and
even today, decorated Easter eggs remain an integral part of Easter celebrations.
