TransitionThe Year 8-9 Transition program commenced this afternoon with Year 8 students meeting with their Senior School Head of House at 2.45pm. The main purpose of the afternoon was to commence camp preparation, with activities including tent pitching and trangia oven cooking. Next Friday our Year 7 students will meet their 2017 Form Teacher and receive an excursion letter that details arrangements for the Year 7-8 Transition Day on Tuesday 6 December. Each form group will make their way to a different location with their 2017 Form Teacher. This is the same day that we host all students who are moving into Year 7 in 2017 for the day. It is always an exciting time and I am very much looking forward to our various transition days and events.

Church ServiceThis Term’s service at St Mark’s will be held next Friday 25 November at 9.30am. Parents and family members are most welcome to attend the service. It will be quite a significant occasion, as it will be the final time that the three year levels will come together as a Middle School.

End of Year ArrangementsIt seems unbelievable that we are talking about the final days of the year! We farewell our Year 8 boys next week. On Wednesday we will hold a special Assembly to thank the Year 8 boys for their wonderful contribution to life in Middle School and to wish them well for their future challenges. This Assembly also provides an opportunity to present the Tonkin Shield to the winning House for 2016. We will also have representatives from Koala Kids and the Vinnies Soup Van with us, to accept cheques from the run/walk event and the Year 8 Social respectively. On Friday 25 November our Year 8 boys have a hectic schedule, with the church service in the morning and then normal classes until lunchtime. They will then meet with their Form Teachers and pack up their books and lockers. From 2.05pm they will be with their Senior School Head of House arranging their gear for camp. The boys will leave their packed bags here at school over the weekend so that all is ready for the Monday morning departure to Kangaroobie. When they return to school after camp, they will be based in the Senior School while completing the three day Senior School transition program.Year 6 and 7 boys continue with normal classes until Thursday 8 December. Dismissal time on this day will be 12.30pm, following a final Assembly. I am very much looking forward to the final stages of what has been a stellar year in Middle School.

Rob French, Head of Middle School

SportThe last round of sport this Saturday (Round 4 AGSV Summer) until 2017. Training will resume as of Tuesday 31 January for all sports with the first round resuming on Saturday 4 February (Round 5 AGSV Summer). There are some activities over the break with the First XI Cricket team heading to Toowoomba Grammar for the annual Neil Dansie Cricket Festival and the USA Basketball Tour takes off to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Oregon and Seattle. The Kayaking Squad have the Ben Ward 40 Mile event in early December also, while the Triathlon Squad continue their events too with one in early December and mid-January.

Sport report – Round 3Many Camberwell teams had to make long journeys and early starts for last week’s matches as the summer sport season continued.Camberwell’s basketball teams were particularly impressive across the board, demonstrating depth in the sport. The match summaries were strikingly similar across all ages, with coaches noting the lack of height and a ‘superstar’ player often being made up for by superior teamwork. The 10A team recorded a four-point win over Ivanhoe with Fraser Hanley and Javana Jayawardena named best players, while Joseph Parker and Stanley Ma were the beneficiaries of the Fourth Blue squad’s fast-break offence, scoring 14 and 10 points respectively in a narrow loss.A very cold start shooting the basketball saw the First V team down 18-2 to open their match against a very strong Ivanhoe opponent, but they managed to fight back well under the leadership and scoring ability of Aden Stitz and good output from the Kruyt twins, to be defeated by just nine points at the final siren. The Second V team demonstrated their growth as a team from their draw to start the season, holding up much better in tough situations this time around. After a fast start, thanks once again to Adam van der Hock, the team was left rattled when he went down with injury. Lacking much of their previous offensive firepower, it was coach Mr Martin’s team orientated defence and better discipline in the clutch that delivered the win, 31-25.The senior cricket teams both suffered losses at the hands of Ivanhoe. The First XI were bowled out for 96 runs in 42 overs and were easily chased down by their opponents. In the Second XI team’s Twenty20 match, Ivanhoe’s top order dominated with bat in hand – one player making a century, with Camberwell only managing one wicket thanks to Mitchell Coffey, leaving them with a target too great to chase down despite valiant efforts from James Frampton, Riley Anderson and Sam Cooper. The 10A cricket side’s performance saw spinner Shiv Malik break an early Peninsula partnership and Oliver Papillo recording a wicket with his first ever ball for the team to set up a difficult but manageable total of 138 to chase. Early in Camberwell’s innings, the openers laid down solid foundations of a big score by keeping their wickets, but weren’t able to put the foot down and accelerate the run rate as required. Despite notable performances from Thomas Graves and Lachlan Melville, the team was bowled out needing just twenty more runs.Encouraging displays were also seen in the senior tennis matches, where four of the five teams were each able to secure victories by a total of 27 sets to 13. Nick Goss and Jack Jaynes led the Second’s to their first win of the season while Year 11s Philippe Phan, Vignesh Alagappan, Jay Tee and Colin Shi were each top performers in their respective Third’s matches. Finally, with this season progressing rapidly and 2016 coming to a close, winter First teams are beginning to start their pre-season training. Running sessions, taking place at Deepdene Oval on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, are a great place to build a fitness base. Football sessions are likely to take place at the very beginning of the summer holiday period and leaders of other sports may get in contact to provide details of their own sessions, so all aspiring players should keep on the lookout for information and start their personal training now.

Physical EducationThe Physical Education Department runs the Australian Fitness Education Award evaluation program biannually as a part of the subject. This is a comprehensive physical fitness evaluation that indicates health-related fitness on a scale that has ‘avoidance of a sedentary lifestyle’ as an underpinning guideline.

Please login into the Parent Portal and access your son’s Semester 2 results under Curriculum > Fitness Results. It is important to acknowledge that the figures recorded on the day are a ‘snapshot’. Your son may well be able to improve on those figures with training. This is not your son’s formal Physical Education report. The subject assessment will appear with his Semester 2 Report. For clarification of the information attached, or should you have any queries relating to this program, please do not hesitate to contact your son’s Physical Education teacher or the Head of Physical Education.

MusicA Magical Evening in the All Souls ChapelI am delighted to share the news of the first event in our new All Souls Chapel, The Fidelio Quartet, to be held at 7.00pm on Friday 2 December. The Fidelio Quartet brings together some of the Australia’s best chamber musicians, including our own Rachel Aitkinson and Isin Cakmakcioglu, CGS parents of Emre (Year 10) and Arman (Year 8). All members of the quartet perform regularly with the MSO, and have toured extensively in much of Europe, Asia and throughout Australia to critical acclaim. Next year, the quartet has embarked on an ambitious project to perform all of Beethoven’s string quartets and we are very lucky indeed that they have given their time for this special concert. All proceeds raised will go towards a new pipe organ for the Chapel, and this will be a special concert in the history of our school. Tickets can be purchased at the following link, and students of CGS are able to attend for free: www.trybooking.com/NRWY

CongratulationsIn other music news, congratulations are in order on several fronts this week. Firstly, to Savas Marcou (Year 11, trumpet), the winner of the 2016 Gainsford Prize for brass and runner up Thomas Cutter (Year 11 trombone). These boys excelled in a high quality field of applicants during the annual auditions last week, made possible by the generous gift from the Gainsford family. The winner of the composition section will be announced soon. Matthew Wu (Year 8) has been awarded first prize for the Ann and Chris Krans Music Award 2017 which was held on Sunday 6 November. This award is for musicians 18 years and under and applications are for all instruments. Matthew played piano on the day, and will perform at their Youth Music Awards Concert in May 2017 when he will receive his award. Well done to all boys on the result of a large amount of consistent and diligent practise.

Friends of Library Book Covering fundraiser Friends of Library are offering school families the opportunity to purchase “library standard” VIPA- EZI book covering. VIPA–EZI is a transparent covering (“contact”) which is much stronger than the covering found in newsagents and stationery suppliers. It’s easy to apply and, more importantly, easy to remove if you need to reposition it onto the book!

Choose from 20m rolls in two widths - ‘Short’ 37.5cm wide (great for novels and A4 books) or ‘Long’ 60 cm wide (the most versatile as it will cover virtually any text book). Perfect, stress free results are EZI with VIPA! Friends of Library stocks VIPA ready to go. VIPA can be purchased:

By cash or cheque directly from the CGS Development Office

OR

By credit card from Trybookings: https://www.trybooking.com/NWIU Collection from CGS Development Office

Pick up VIPA Book Covering from the Development Office Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm
