Headway Basingstoke’s

History

Headway Basingstoke was founded in 1982 by relatives and carers of people who had sustained a brain injury. Having identified a need for specialised support locally, relatives and carers worked with professional medical staff to develop services specifically to meet their needs. Headway Place, Basingstoke, opened in 1986 as a Day Rehabilitation Unit and specialises in the rehabilitation and continued support for people with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and their carers and families.

The Management Team and Trustees of Headway Basingstoke have been able to help a large number of people who have sustained brain injury, regain their confidence and achieve their potential.

Brain Injury takes many forms and has many causes and levels of severity. The brain injury can strike anyone at any time and doesn’t just affect individuals; it can transform the lives of entire families.

Activities at Headway Place are many and varied; a formal cognitive rehabilitation programme, workshops to improve both cognitive and practical skills are offered - from memory, attention and language to cooking, art/pottery and gardening. Additionally, we also offer an external rehabilitation service accessing local and national amenities.

Clients have varying degrees of mobility and dependence and so therapy and long term outcomes for each differs greatly, as no two brain injuries are the same. Assessing and meeting these specialised needs is where we feel the strength of Headway Basingstoke lies.

The size of the task

Many thousands sustain a minor brain injury resulting in unconsciousness for 15 minutes or less; many have short term loss of attention, concentration or memory.

Although they usually recover completely within 3 - 6 months the problems they face during their recovery period are very real, and people often feel frustrated that they are not fully informed about these “unseen” injuries.

Thousands of people may sustain severe brain injuries and be unconscious for 6 hours or more. Brain injury does not necessarily affect life span, and those with severe injuries are likely to need full-time, round the clock care for the rest of their lives. Families take most of the strain and the impact of care places the family unit under severe pressure.

How does Headway

Help?

Headway organisations nationally, led by Headway the brain injury association, help those who have sustained brain injury, and their families and carers, by providing information about the possible consequences of brain injury and the related problems which can face both injured and those involved with them. A wide range of publications can be found at:
