A recent survey has shown that the busiest shopping street in theworld is not in London, New York, or Paris, but in Warsaw. It’s calledNowy Swiat (pronounced /nQvI SvI@t/), which means NewWorld. An incredible 14,000 Poles walk down this main street every hour.

It is a lovely place to shop. The pavements are very wide. Thereare statues, palaces, attractive town houses, exclusive cafés, andhigh-class restaurants. The buildings aren’t too tall. They look old,but in fact the whole city was rebuilt after World War II.

There aren’t any billboards or neon lights. There isn’t any loudmusic, and there aren’t many tourists. People think that Polish shopshave nothing to sell, so nobody comes shopping here. The worlddoesn’t know about this paradise for shoppers – yet.

It is now possible to buy almost everything in Warsaw. There are alot of shops from the West, but the interesting thing is that Polishmanufacturers are now producing high quality goods. They are goodbecause they are not mass produced for world consumption.

Nowy Swiat has a lot of small shops, specialist shops, and chicshops. It hasn’t got the huge department stores that sell the samethings everywhere.

The town of Shenzhen, just forty kilometres north of Hong Kong, is theworld’s biggest building site. In 1982 it was a fishing village with twomain roads, fields, and a population of 30,000. Now it has a populationof 3 million. It is growing at an incredible speed. It is spreading northtowards Guangzhou (also known as Canton) and west towards Macau. The Chinese government hopes that in less than ten years this area willbe the biggest city on earth, with a population of 40 million people.

China is changing. It is no longer a country where absolutely every-thing is owned and controlled by the state. Developers are welcome. AsDeng Xiaoping, the Chinese leader, said in 1992, ‘To get rich is glorious.’The old China of bicycles and Little Red Books is disappearing. A worldof mobile phones and capitalism is arriving.

The Chinese people seem to welcome dramatic change. They don’tworry about losing traditional ways of life. They want the new. As theposters on the sides of the highways shout, ‘Development is the onlyway.’

Shenzhen is a shocking place, like nowhere else on earth that I haveever seen. It is a city with no boundaries and no centre. There are newconcrete office blocks, factories, and housing blocks as far as the eyecan see. Not just dozens of new buildings, or even hundreds, butthousands. And it is all happening so fast. It takes just six months todesign, build, and finish a 60-storey, air-conditioned skyscraper. As onearchitect said to me, ‘If you move too slowly here, someone will walkover you.’

The new Hopewell Highway runs from Shenzhen to Guangzhou, andit takes just two hours to do the 123 kilometres. This superhighway willbecome the main street of a huge new city, as it gets bigger and biggeruntil the east meets the west, and the countryside in the middledisappears under concrete.

1 Shenzhen is the largest city in the world. ____

2 In the past Shenzhen was a building site. ____

3 Shenzhen is getting bigger very quickly. ____

4 The Chinese government is worried that too many people live there. ____

5 The government owns everything in China. ____

6 More people are buying bicycles now than in the past. ____

7 The Chinese people want a different way of life. ____

8 There are dozens of new buildings in Shenzhen. ____

Now it has apopulation of 3 million. It is growing at an incredible speed. It isspreading north towards Guangzhou (also known as Canton) andwest towards Macau. The Chinese government hopes that in lessthan ten years this area will be the biggest city on earth, with apopulation of 40 million people.

China is changing. It is no longer a country where absolutelyeverything is owned and controlled by the state. Developers arewelcome. As Deng Xiaoping, the Chinese leader, said in 1992, ‘To getrich is glorious.’ The old China of bicycles and Little Red Books isdisappearing. A world of mobile phones and capitalism is arriving.

The Chinese people seem to welcome dramatic change. Theydon’t worry about losing traditional ways of life. They want the new.As the posters on the sides of the highways shout, ‘Development isthe only way.’

Shenzhen is a shocking place, like nowhere else on earth that Ihave ever seen. It is a city with no boundaries and no centre. Thereare new concrete office blocks, factories, and housing blocks as faras the eye can see. Not just dozens of new buildings, or evenhundreds, but thousands. And it is all happening so fast. It takes justsix months to design, build, and finish a 60-storey, air-conditionedskyscraper. As one architect said to me, ‘If you move too slowly here, someone will walk over you.’

The new Hopewell Highway runs from Shenzhen to Guangzhou, and it takes just two hours to do the 123 kilometres. Thissuperhighway will become the main street of a huge new city, as itgets bigger and bigger until the east meets the west, and thecountryside in the middle disappears under concrete.

1 Shenzhen is the largest city in the world. ____

2 In the past Shenzhen was a building site. ____

3 Shenzhen is getting bigger very quickly. ____

When Chris McCandless graduated from Emory University, Atlanta, inJune 1990, he sent his parents a letter containing his final reports. Hisletter ended ‘Say ‘Hi’ to everyone for me.’

No one in Chris’s family ever heard from him again. He drove west out of Atlanta, and invented a new life for himself

with a new name. He left his car in some woods and burned all hismoney, because, as he wrote in his diary, ‘I need no possessions. I cansurvive with just nature.’

For the next two years, he hitched to various parts of the UnitedStates and Mexico. He wanted the freedom to go where he wantedand work when he needed. For him, his life was very rich. ‘God, it’sgreat to be alive. Thank you! Thank you!’ his diary reads.

Chris came from a comfortable background. His father had abusiness which he ran efficiently, and he controlled his own family ina similar way. Chris and his father didn’t get on. When his parentsdidn’t hear from him for several months, they contacted the police, but they could do nothing. In July 1992, two years after Chris leftAtlanta, his mother woke in the middle of the night. ‘I could hearChris calling me. I wasn’t dreaming. He was begging, ‘Mom! Help me!’But I couldn’t help him because I didn’t know where he was.’

Chris’s dream was to spend some time in Alaska, and this is wherehe went in April 1992. In early May, after a few days in the Alaskanbush, Chris found an old bus which hunters used for shelter. It had abed and a stove. He decided to stay there a while. ‘Total freedom,’ hewrote. ‘My home is the road.’

However, reality soon changed the dream. He was hungry, and itwas difficult to find enough to eat. He shot ducks, squirrels, birds, and sometimes a moose, and with these he ate wild potatoes, wildmushrooms, and berries. He was losing a lot of weight.

On July 30 he wrote, ‘Extremely weak. Fault of potato seed. Can’tstand up. Starving. Danger.’ It seems that Chris was eating a part ofthe wild potato plant that was poisonous. He couldn’t get out of thebus to look for food. ‘I am trapped in the wild,’ he wrote on August 5.

He became weaker and weaker as he was starving to death. Hisfinal note says, ‘I have had a good life and thank the Lord. Goodbyeand may God bless all!’

Then he crawled into his sleeping bag and lost consciousness. Heprobably died on August 18. One of the last things he did was to takea photo of himself, one hand holding his final note, the other handraised in a brave goodbye. His face is horribly thin, but he is smiling inthe picture, and the look in his eyes says ‘I am at peace.’
