30th Sunday of Ordinary Time + October 24, 2021FIRST READING—Jeremiah 31:7-9Thus says the LORD: Shout with joy for Jacob, exult at the head of the nations; proclaim your praise and say: The LORD has delivered his people, the remnant of Israel. Behold, I will bring them back from the land of the north; I will gather them from the ends of the world, with the blind and the lame in their midst, the mothers and those with child; they shall return as an immense throng. They departed in tears, but I will console them and guide them; I will lead them to brooks of water, on a level road, so that none shall stumble. For I am a father to Israel, Ephraim is my first-born.

RESPONSORIAL—Psalm 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6Response: The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion, we were like men dreaming. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with rejoicing. (R.)

Then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad indeed. (R.)

Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the torrents in the southern desert. Those that sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. (R.)

Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown,They shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves. (R.)

SECOND READING—Hebrews 5:1-6Brothers and sisters:Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God,to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honor upon himselfbut only when called by God, just as Aaron was.In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to him: You are my son: this day I have begotten you;just as he says in another place: You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

GOSPEL— Mark 10:46-52

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd,

Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus,

sat by the roadside begging.

On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth,

he began to cry out and say,

“Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.”

And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.

But he kept calling out all the more,

“Son of David, have pity on me.”

Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called the blind man, saying to him,

“Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.”

He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.

Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?”

The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.”

Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.”

Immediately he received his sight

and followed him on the way.

THE NICENE CREEDI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER JAY

n the 1960’s our Catholic Church, after a decade of discussions and prayer, published teachings on her vision and mission, called Vatican II. One fruit of those synodal meetings was of the “Pastoral constitution on the Church in the modern world,” called Gaudium et spes, which says:

“The way in which the earthly and the heavenly city interpenetrate each other can be recognized only by faith; indeed it remains a mystery of human history, that is, of a history always troubled by sin until the glory of the sons of God is fully revealed. As she pursues her appointed goal of bringing salvation to men, the Church not only communicates the divine life to mankind but also in some measure reflects the light of that life over the whole world.”

Reinforcing her divine goal of getting people to heaven, we are left with the challenge of some data points of today:

Just over 50% of US adults who were raised Catholic have left the faith.

85% of Confirmed teens stop practicing at age 21.

About 70% of Catholics do not believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Our Great Grouping Mass weekend attendance is down from nearly 3000 just 3 years ago to under 1,500 currently.

The battle is clear. The game is on. The fight is real. The devil seems like he is winning as he did on Good Friday, when God seemingly died. It’s in this moment we need to be on our knees as beggars in front of our King, Jesus Christ! It’s in this time we need the heart of our Mother to encourage us in hearing the Word of God! It’s hic et nunc we need to be heroic in serving those most in need of Jesus’ tender and sacrificial love. Join us in praying for the souls of our faithful departed to be in heaven:

ALL SAINTS DAY—MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18:00 AM Mass at Good Samaritan9:00 AM Mass at Saints John & Paul (children are invited to dress as their favorite saint!)6:00 PM Mass at Our Lady of Peace7:00 PM Latin Mass at Saints John & Paul

ALL SOULS DAY—TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26:30 PM Mass at Good Samaritan7:00 PM Candlelight Mass at Saints John & Paul

What else can we do (besides coming to Mass every Sunday)? Participate and invite people to read Scripture or join a small group, and to attend Bible studies, The Search, and Alpha. Reach out to those in need through our Outreach!

his week, the second reading reminds us of a basic but important fact: a priest is our “representative before God.” From ancient times until now, this has been the case. Whether it be Moses on Mt. Sinai or the high priest in the Jerusalem Temple or one of our priests at one of the altars in our grouping, a priest represents the people to God so that his words are spoken to God as if from all of us. That is why we say “Amen” so often at Mass. It is as if we are saying, “What Father just said, I say too.” As a representative of the people, it is good for a priest to understand the people he represents.

The Letter to the Hebrews points out that in ancient Israel, a high priest is a good person to represent us to God. A high priest understands our weakness since he himself is subject to the same weaknesses. He understands the struggle and the messy mixture of good intentions and bad actions, of the right thing done in the wrong way, that characterize so many of our sins. He also understands how people striving to be good still are capable of sin. He gets all of that because it is his lived reality too. On top of that, people verbally confessed their sins to their priests in ancient Israel (see Leviticus 5:4-6 and 19:21-22; confession is not new with Jesus), and so he knew well the sins of his people.

Just like a high priest, Jesus understands the dynamics of fallen human nature. He lived a fully human life, and though he did not commit sin, he did take on sin, and in a mystical sense he even became sin (see 2 Corinthians 5:21). Without committing it, Jesus experienced sin. The high priest can get me because he is familiar with his own human weakness, but Jesus gets me even more because he is intimately familiar with my sins.

The high priests’ offerings were in part for their own sins. There was something necessarily self-serving about their ministry. Jesus’ offering is different because none of it was for himself. All of it was for us! That is the character of our great high priest, Jesus Christ. He is the primary celebrant of every Mass, through the ministry of the Catholic priest who acts in the person of Christ, and so every Mass puts us in touch with Jesus’ act of selfless love and mercy. It is as if at every Mass, Jesus looks out at me, knows and understands my sins and hangups and dysfunctions, takes them upon himself, and goes to his Father on my behalf.

That is what the Spirit is reminding us of today. Jesus is in my corner. He is on my side. He gets me. And he takes away my sins.

hen Jesus Christ was born, God veiled Himself in flesh and became one of us. During his ministry, Jesus taughtthat He Himself was true food and true drink, and said that the Bread of the Eucharist was His flesh. To keep His promiseto be with us always, “even to the end of the age,” Jesushas veiled Himself in that Bread, becoming food for us.

The Eucharist is Jesus Christ.

Come before Him in Adoration and let Him look at you.Let your heart be open to Him. Let your soulrecognize its Creator. Worship andAdore Him.

He is here.

ust a few years ago, introducing the idea of counseling to someone was like getting my 6-year-old daughter to eat her vegetables. “Counseling? Yuck, no!” was a common theme I heard from people. Not now. The global pandemic, political tensions, and other divisions have created a mental health crisis in our country. In my 20 years of studying and practicing as a psychologist, the value and demand for mental health counseling has never been higher than right now. Every counselor and practice I know of is on a waitlist. And therefore, chances are you may be willing to seek help but you find yourself waiting. What can you do while you’re on waitlist?

1. Download and use a self-help app. A couple that I am familiar with are COVID Coach (free) and HALLOW (subscription fee).

2. Read. Learning more about your mental health concern can increase your self-awareness and provide you with a better idea of how you need to heal, change, and improve your mental health. A few recommendations:

Unworried: A Life Without Anxiety by Dr. Greg PopcakCatholic Guide to Depression by Dr. Aaron Kheriaty and John CihakIntegrity Restored: Helping Catholic Families Win the Battle Against Pornography by Dr. Peter Kloponis

3. Exercise. Lots of psychological research has proven that regular exercise even in mild-moderate amounts acts as a natural anti-depressant and stress reliever.

4. Talk to Someone. The simple act of telling someone a concern and that person listening with empathy and non-judgment can be incredibly helpful. Talking to someone else can build your social support, which is a buffer from mental health symptoms becoming worse.

5. Pray. This might seem obvious. But we often stop praying in times of distress, when we need it most. Psychological research shows that prayer works, but with a small and important caveat—prayer that is relational with God is the most helpful. In other words, praying to God in a conversational manner that also involves silence to listen to what God might be saying back is the most “effective” type of prayer in helping us with our mental health.

6. Go to Church. A recent study out of Harvard found that going to Mass and participating in your faith community decreased depressive symptoms, alcohol use, and increased life satisfaction and a sense of flourishing. It’s tapping into a community and feeling a sense of belonging, which is pivotal to mental health.

7. Volunteer to Help Someone Else. Mental health distress can often lead us to over-focus on ourselves. It can be extremely helpful and healthy to help others and get outside of ourselves—getting your neighbor’s mail, volunteering at the soup kitchen, joining a parish ministry, helping a family member. Helping others is healthy, it’s that simple.

eucharistic adorationAs Catholics, we believe that Christ becomes truly present within the Blessed Sacrament. As promised by Him, His Presence is abiding, not something that vanishes at the conclusion of Mass. During Eucharistic Adoration, we can sit silently in His Presence and open ourselves to His Graces. Adoration available at Our Lady of Peace, Monday-Thursday 8AM-8PM and perpetually at Saints John & Paul, Sunday-Friday.
