CHANGE IN DEPARTMENT CONSTITUTION
& LEADERSHIP
With the establishment of a separate department of
Mathematics in June 2020, the Department of Basic
Sciences & Humanities now comprises the disciplines of
Chemistry, Economics, English,
Physics, Physical Education and Student Welfare.
Dr. Sonia Paul took over as HoD from Dr. Antony V.
Varghese, and Mr. Jose Antony V. J. is the Assistant HoD
since June 22, 2020.
The department organized a two-
day international webinar on
Health, Fitness & Wellbeing from
June 26 to 27, 2020. The session
titled ‘Let’s fight Against Known
Viruses than the Unknown’ was
handled by Mr. C. Vijay, Founder & CEO, Smart 7 Wellness, Chennai,
and the session on ‘Health &
Wellness’ was delivered by Mr. S.
Sriharan, Senior Lecturer,
Sabaragamuwa University of
Srilanka.
A webinar titled ‘Next Generation
Challenges in Astro Technology’
was organized by the discipline of
Physics on August 12, 2020. The
session was handled by Prof. A. N.
Ramaprakash, Scientist G, Head of
Instrumentation, Inter – University
Centre for Astronomy and Astro-
physics (IUCAA), Pune.
The department organized a live
Online quiz on August 26, 2020 as part of National Sports Day (Official
date August 29, 2020), on INDIAN
SPORTS. The quiz was conducted
on the online platform Quizizz.
Eighty-two participants attended the
quiz.
The department in association with
the Sports Club organized a live
Online Zumba session on
September 26, 2020. The session
was led by the International certified
Zumba instructors Mr. Sreejith K.
and Ms. Saniga.
A National Webinar on Nuclear Reactor Technology in India- Advances &
Opportunities was organized by the Department of Basic Sciences and
Humanities in association with Department of Mechanical Engineering,
on September 4, 2020. The session was handled by Mr. A.K.
Balasubrahmanian, Distinguished Scientist & Director (Technical),
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd., Mumbai. The webinar
enlightened the participants about the advancement of Nuclear Reactor
Technology in India and challenging opportunities for students pursuing
science & technology.
A National Webinar series titled Expert Voices was organized by the
discipline of English. The first session on Internet and Communication
Revolution was conducted on October 31, 2020. The session by Dr.
Rangarajan Gopalakrishnan (Professor, RCBS) briefed about the
importance of communication in the internet age.
On November 14, 2020, the ‘Speakers Forum’ along with the Department
of Basic Sciences & Humanities organized an online quiz competition titled Grey Matter. A. M. Muhammed Shahabaz (ECE Alpha, Semester
III) was the winner of the competition.

POSTER COMPETITION ON CURRENT
INNOVATIONS IN PHYSICS
The Physics wing of our department on a regular
basis conducts a poster competition to motivate
the students and to update them on the latest
innovations in the domain of physics. The com-
petition is conducted in the corridor in front of
the DBSH staffroom (1st floor), during the fore-
noon tea-break. Students actively participate
and enter into vibrant discussions which make
the sessions more interesting.
DEPARTMENT PROGRAMMES
. A Three-day International webinar on “Nanoscience and
Technology”, was organized by the discipline of Chemistry
from September 16 to 18, 2020. The sessions on
‘Interfacial Modification in Nanocomposites to Tailor
Functionalities’, ‘Opportunities in metal based
nanomaterials’, ‘Advanced Nanocomposites for Laser
Applications’, ‘Analytical Characterization of
Nanomaterials’, ‘Recent Implications in Biodetection and
Therapy and Fiber-Based Energy Devices for Wearable
Applications’, were handled by Prof. Sabu Thomas
(Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi
University, Kottayam), Dr Sree Kumar Vadakee Madam
(Assistant Professor, Department of metallurgical and

A National Webinar Series titled Ethics Matters was organized
by the discipline of English.
The first session of the series on Ethics in Engineering
was held on November 7, 2020 and the session was handled by Prof. C. D. Sebastian, Professor of Philosophy, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Mumbai. The session enlightened the
participants with different ethical principles which should be followed by engineering professionals.
The second session in the national webinar series Expert Voices on Stress Mindset: A New Approach to
Stress Management was conducted on November 14,
2020. The session by Dr. Jayavel S. (Assistant Professor, Central University of Karnataka) briefed about the various factors that leads to stress in a person and a new approach to effectively counter and manage stress.
The third session in the national webinar series Expert Voices on Umbrellas and Sewing Machines: Collaging
Creativity was conducted on November 28, 2020. The
session by Prof. C.S. Jayaram (Professor, ASAS Kochi) briefed about the various factors that constitute the mystique of creative expressions in art.
The fourth session in the National Webinar Series
titled Ethics Matters was held on December 5, 2020
and the session on Business Ethics was handled by Dr.
Nisigandha Bhuyan, Associate Professor, IIM
Calcutta. The session gave an idea about basic aspects
of business ethics and its importance.
The fifth session in the national webinar series Expert Voices on The Secrets of Great Teamwork was
conducted on December 12, 2020. The session by Dr. Nobin Thomas (Assistant Professor, IIM Indore) briefed about the importance as well as the various aspects of effective teamwork.
A Four-day Training Programme on Understanding the
Constitution of India was organized by the discipline of
Economics during December 11, 12, 15 and 16, 2020. The programme was organized to acquaint the KTU faculty in Humanities with the new syllabus on the Indian Constitution. The sessions were handled by Ms. Divya Salim, Assistant Professor, National Law University, Bhopal.

DEPARTMENT SEMINARS To enhance the teaching-learning process the department conducts a monthly seminar every last Saturday
of the month. The objective behind the seminar is to share knowledge across disciplines and encourage new discussions. The topics would range from general education based to more specific STEM-based
subjects. Due to the ongoing pandemic, all seminars are conducted online.
The department seminar for the academic year commenced with ‘Interactive Tools for Effective Online
Sessions’, by Mr. Vinay Menon (Faculty - English), on July 30, 2020. The session covered some of
the recommended tools for making online sessions more engaging including live polls, quizzes, and
self-paced presentations.
The second department seminar was on ‘Understanding the Disinvestment Policies: with Special
Reference to Union Budget 2020’, by Ms. Saritha V. (Faculty - Economics), on August 22, 2020. The
session critically examined the reasons and effects of disinvestment policies undertaken by the
government.
The third department seminar was on ‘New Era in Astrophysics: Gravitational Waves’, by Dr. Rinku
Jacob (Faculty - Physics), on September 26, 2020. The session beautifully highlighted the scope of
Gravitational-wave astronomy and also it gave an insight into the difference in the concept of gravity
proposed by Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.
The fourth department seminar was on ‘Why do we blow our top?’, by Dr. Silvy Mathew (Student
Welfare Officer), on October 31, 2020. The session carefully touched upon different dimensions of
extreme human emotions and it gave an insight into how we can wisely control these emotions.

She also published a paper titled ‘Investigation on Dielectric Properties of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles-

Dr. Deepa K. Baby published a paper on ‘Optimization of Biodiesel Production by Transesterification
of Palm Oil and Evaluation of Biodiesel Quality’ in the Journal of Materials Today.

Second International Conference on Recent Advances in Materials and Manufacturing, conducted

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS
Dr. Ragin Ramdas M. received the Best Presentation Award
for presenting a paper on “Dual-stimuli Responsive Polytriazoles
via Click Polymerization”, at the Two Days International
Webinar on Chemistry: A Motivation in Research, organized by
Government General Degree College, Keshiary, West Bengal
on August 26, 2020.
Dr. Ragin Ramdas M. was awarded the Doctorate Degree in
Chemistry by the University of Kerala on September 16, 2020.
He completed his research entitled ‘Investigations on Thermo -
Responsive Smart Polymers Realized by Click Chemistry’ from
Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram on
16th September 2020.
Dr. Ragin Ramdas M. was selected as the Peer - Reviewer for a
research article for Materials Today Proceeding (Elsevier
publications). The article was submitted for International
Conference on Recent Advances in Materials and
Manufacturing (ICRAMM 2020) on November 10, 2020.
Ms. Parvathy N. was appointed as Full-Time Editor cum
Reviewer for Aesthetique Journal for International Literary
Enterprises (AJILE) ISSN 2456-1754 (Online).
Dr. Rinku Jacob received official approval for the project titled
“Study and Characterization of Cardiac dynamics from ECG signals
based on complex network measures and to automate the
classification of arrhythmias using convolutional neural network”
by The Department of Science and Technology (DST) - SERB.
The duration of the project is three years.

Development Programme on Biomaterials, Biodevices and Medical Imaging Processes, organized by the Departments of Mechanical Engineering & Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering along with Bio Instruments Research and Development Society (BIRDS) at Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology on August 10 to 14, 2020.
Dr. Silvy Mathew delivered a talk on ‘Tips on Handling Adolescent Problems’, organized by the
Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology on September 16, 2020. She also delivered a talk on, ‘Effective Mentoring’ and on ‘Positive Mental Health’, during
the Student Induction Programme for the 2020 - 2024 B.Tech Batch, organized by the Student Induction Committee, RSET on October 12, 2020, and on November 27, 2020 respectively.

BOARD OF STUDIES
The Board of Studies (BoS) for each discipline was constituted as a part of autonomous status received by
the institution from AICTE. The BoS was constituted by incorporating two Subject Experts and one
Industrial Expert along with the faculty members of each discipline. The Head of the Department, Dr.
Sonia Paul is Chairperson of the BoS for each discipline. The senior faculty of each discipline will be the
Secretary of the respective BoS. The date of first BoS meeting & details of the two subject experts and one
