(MS) -- The skin is your body's largest organ, so it's no wonder there is such an abun-dance of products and advice available to help keep it in top form. While many prod-ucts and practices are touted as being "the best" for your skin, the truth is, when itcomes to skincare there are often more myths than facts. The wise consumer shouldknow how to separate fact from fiction. The skincare experts who make CeraVe(R)cleansers and moisturizers want to help everyone put their best face forward -- andthat means learning the truth about healthy skincare.

MYTH: Skin is protected from the sun when you use a product with a high sunprotection factor (SPF).FACT: Some SPF products only block against one type of UV ray, generally UVB, orthe rays that cause sunburns. In reality, the sun showers us with UVA, UVB and UVCrays. UVA rays, which have an aging effect, penetrate into the lower layers of the skinand should be protected against as well. That means you should look for a sunscreenthat is clearly labeled "broad spectrum," not just ones with a high SPF number.

MYTH: Deep scrubbing of your complexion prevents breakouts.FACT: Cleansing with harsh soaps or exfoliating scrubs can strip the skin of vital natu-ral oils and compromise its protective barrier. Harsh and frequent, more than twice aday, cleansing can trick the skin into producing more oil and compound breakoutproblems. Scrubbing can also lead to skin sensitivity or rashes.

MYTH: Facials are a beauty must-have.FACT: Facials can be fun and if done by an expert esthetician can help deliver a vari-ety of benefits such as moisturization, deep cleansing and exfoliation. If you canafford a professional facial make sure you're "in the hands" of an expert esthetician oryou could wind up with irritation or scarring.

MYTH: Wrinkle creams can completely eradicate wrinkles.FACT: These days there are many ways to "erase" the signs of time on the skin. The most effective ways are with injectable substances, fillers or plastic surgery. Professionally administered chemical peels and lasers can also help give your skin a fresher, more youthfulappearance. Anti-aging creams cannot "completely remove wrinkles," but their formulas often contain ingredients such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and ceramides that deeply moisturize the skin and make it look more supple and radiant.

MYTH: Doing facial exercises will tone facial muscles, providing a more youthful appearance.FACT: There has never been any substantiation for this beauty myth. In fact, certain facial movements such as squinting and laughingmay contribute to the formation of wrinkles -- maybe that's why we call them laugh lines and crows feet.

MYTH: Expensive skincare products are better for your skin.FACT: Many mass-marketed products available at your local drugstore are just as effective as luxury department-store brands. In fact, many contain the same ingredients as their more expensive counterparts. Elegant packaging, advertising and luxury brand names areoften what you pay for when purchasing more expensive products. CeraVe(R) cleansers and moisturizers, which contain ceramides, hyaluronic acid, cholesterol and niacinamide, found in pricier brands, also feature a patented technology that allows a single applicationto go a long way. The ingredients unravel slowly in the skin where they continue to work for up to 24 hours. CeraVe(R) FacialMoisturizing Lotion PM, applied before bedtime, penetrates the skin barrier to lock in precious moisture. CeraVe(R) Facial MoisturizingLotion AM with SPF 30 provides broad-spectrum protection against harmful UV rays year round. It's 24/7 skincare. To learn more about these innovative and affordable products (both under $15), visit www.cerave.com.

Apart from graying hair, wrin-kles are one of the key signs of agingin a person. As a result, individuals willoften search near and far and spare noexpense at keeping wrinkles at bay. However, there are simple steps onecan take to diminish the look of wrin-kles without drastic measures.

Injectable fillers and othermedical procedures top the list of wrin-kle treatments. However, for those whodon't want to visit a doctor for wrinkles, there are some steps to try.

First, treating wrinkles requiresunderstanding why they form. As aperson ages, his or her skin becomesthinner, dryer and less elastic. Thesefactors contribute to the creases thatform in the skin. Genetics also plays alarge role in the probability for wrin-kles. Some people are just prone tomore wrinkles than others.

Certain controllable factorsalso contribute to wrinkles. Therefore,

elimination of these factors can lessenthe chance for wrinkle formation.* Quit smoking. Blood supply changesin the skin as a result of smoking, which can speed up the natural agingprocess. Smokers tend to have morewrinkles than nonsmokers. Simply quit-ting can help stave off wrinkling of theskin.* Avoid UV exposure. Ultraviolet lightfrom the sun and tanning beds candamage the skin. This can dry outskin, removing elasticity and even thin-ning out the skin years before naturewould. UV exposure breaks down theskin's connective tissue, contributing tosagging and wrinkling. Always use asun protection product when out in thesun, and avoid the strongest rays. Inlieu of a tanning bed, use a self-tan-ning cream or a bronzing powder for awarm glow.* Be conscious of repeated facialexpressions. Squinting, smiling andother repeated gestures with the facecan cause lines to form under the skin.

For those who find themselves squint-ing, they can try sunglasses or havetheir vision checked. Smiling cannot beavoided; however, one can stretch themuscles of the face to improve instrength and flexibility.* Eat and drink healthily. The skin is thelargest organ of the body. Just like theheart and lungs, it needs healthy foodsto stay in top form. Be sure to includea balanced diet and plenty of hydratingbeverages in the plan for healthy skin.Avoid over-indulgence in caffeine, sodium and alcohol, all of which candehydrate and possibly compound skindryness.* Exercise. Exercise gets the heartpumping and brings oxygen to all nec-essary systems of the body. Again, with skin being the largest organ, exer-cise can help promote a healthyappearance and ward off prematurewrinkling.* Use care when washing. Tuggingand rubbing of the skin can damageconnective fibers, leading to wrinkles.

Massage the face gently when wash-ing and avoid harsh exfoliating prod-ucts that can scratch and damage theskin.

Trying these methods can helpminimize the appearance of wrinkles. However, if wrinkles become a nui-sance, a consultation with a dermatolo-gist to discuss options may be neces-sary.

Men and women alike suf-fer from varicose veins, which canbe a cosmetic nuisance or a symp-tom of a serious medical condition.New varicose vein treatments areenabling individuals to live happierlives.Varicose veins are enlarged, gnarled veins that can resemblethe twisted roots of a tree. Theydevelop when the one-way valvesin veins that carry blood to theheart are faulty. Blood backs up inthe veins as a result, and stretchesthe vein.

According to experts fromMeridian Health, varicose veins arevery common and affect half of allAmericans ages 50 and older. Butthey're not just a concern for sen-iors. Anyone can develop varicoseveins, but women are at a greaterrisk than men.

Varicose veins typically donot have any symptoms, except for

the visual presence of deep blue orpurple, bulging veins that largelyoccur on the legs and feet. However, aches in the legs, heavyfeeling, itching around veins, orthrobbing may also occur. Similarto varicose veins are spider veins, which are smaller and closer to theskin surface.

Pregnancy, age andstretching of the veins are contribu-tors to varicose veins. Being over-weight or standing for long dura-tions of time are other contributors,as is wearing restrictive clothing.

There are a number oftreatments that have been devel-oped for varicose veins. Duringsclerotherapy, a solution is injectedinto a small or medium-sized veinto scar it and close it up.Eventually the vein will shrivel andfade. A similar procedure is donewith lasers to shrink the vein with-out the need for needles or sur-gery. Catheter procedures use aheated tube inserted into the vein

to collapse the vein and seal itshut. Vein stripping involvesremoving large veins through sev-eral small incisions. It is usually anoutpatient procedure but willrequire a surgery.

In most cases, blood willnaturally reroute to other veins inthe legs after one of these proce-dures. Much of the blood flow inthe legs is carried out by deeperveins. Individuals who undergothese procedures can usually walkdirectly after the surgery and fullrecovery is only a matter of a cou-ple of weeks or more.

Feeling good about oneselfinvolves being happy about what ison the inside and outside. Hidinglegs and feet due to varicose veinscan be embarrassing and uncom-fortable, especially as the weatherwarms. Talk to a doctor about arecommendation to a vascular sur-geon who can offer treatments forvaricose veins.

Sunblock -- and its adequate reapplication --is one of the single most effective ways to preventsunburn and a host of sun-related maladies. Despitethe warnings of skin cancer and ailments related tothe sun, people succumb to sunburn year after year. The results can be quite painful.

According to the Centers for Disease Controland Prevention, getting sunburned even once canmake a person more likely to get skin cancer.Though it can be that simple to increase risk for skincancer, there's actually quite a lot going on behindthe scenes when a person gets a sunburn. The veryouter layer of the epidermis, or the outside-most skin,is made up of dead skin cells. Directly below themare living skin cells that can be damaged when ultra-violet light from the sun penetrates these living cellsand eventually kills them off. Once the body sensesthe dead cells, the immune system springs intoaction. White blood cells are sent to the area torepair damage, which involves increased blood flow. This blood flow makes the skin red and warm.Furthermore, the damaged skin cells send out chemi-cal messengers that activate pain receptors. This iswhy sunburned skin is red, warm and painful.

There are different remedies for alleviatingthe pain associated with sunburn. While there aresome over-the-counter analgesics that will temporari-ly numb pain, some of the best treatments are simpleand natural.

    * Cool water baths and brief showers. can reducethe temperature of the skin.* Aloe gels often soothe and cool. It is believedthat aloe has anti-inflammatory properties.* Some people say that white vinegar can reducepain and inflammation when sprayed on theaffected area or used in compresses.* Sunburned skin is often dry and chapped. Amoisturizer, such as cocoa butter, can help mini-mize irritation.* It's important to remain hydrated because dam-aged skin may not be as effective in lockingmoisture inside. Plus, the body needs food andwater to fuel the repair of sunburned skin.

The best remedy for sunburn is to avoid it atall costs. Wearing sunblock, a wide-brimmed hat,UV-protection clothing, and sunglasses and avoidingthe sun during peak hours are ways to remain com-fortable and healthy.

Simple ways to ease the 'ouch'

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. In 2006, the most recent year for which statistics are available, 53,919people were diagnosed with melanomas of the skin in the UnitedStates alone.

Those statistics have clearly caught the eye of American law-makers, who recently passed legislation that makes it more expensiveto visit tanning salons. Regardless of where individuals stand on theissue of taxing tanning salons, it's clear more and more people mustplace a greater emphasis on skin care and skin cancer prevention. Those concerned about their skin can heed the following tips toreduce their risk of skin damage and, ultimately, skin cancer.

    * Don't ignore SPF. In recent years a nearly society-wide shift in theperception of tanning has taken place. Once popular primarily in justthe summer months, nowadays tanning salons thrive in winter as well. While it can be nice to have a good tan, it's also potentially very dan-gerous, and sun worshippers must weight the benefits of golden skinversus the potentially lethal side effects of overexposure to the sun.

When going out in the sun, even if only for a short time, apply a

broad-spectrum sun-screen with a minimumsun protection factor of15. When spending asignificant period oftime outdoors, choose ahigher SPF sunscreen. But for those whospend most of their timeindoors, an SPF 15should be sufficient.

    * Cleanse the skindaily. Another way tokeep skin healthy andlooking good is toinclude skin cleanser inthe daily cleaning rou-tine. Simple soap won'tbe enough. Instead, individuals should lookfor a skin cleanser thatfits their skin, be it acleanser tailored to dryskin or one meant foruse on oily skin. Thosewith dry skin should avoid cleansers that contain alcohol and look forsomething more on the mild side. Those with oily skin should look fora product that removes oil. Also, those with more oily skin should con-sider cleaning the skin more than once per day.

    * Exfoliate the skin. Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells that giveskin a dull look. While some people exfoliate each and every day, it'spossible to still get the desired effect, removing dead skin cells, whenexfoliating just 2 to 3 times per week. Still, for those especially con-cerned about how their skin looks, a microdermabrasion home kit willcompletely remove the uppermost layer of dead skin. While this isn'tnecessary for most people, it is an available option.

    * Moisturize. Moisturizing is an important part of keeping skin healthyand looking young. One common misconception among people withoily skin is that their skin is already moist enough and they don't needto moisturize. In fact, oily skin is the result of the body's effort to com-pensate for skin that is not moist enough. An oil-free moisturizer canhelp control the oil and give the skin a younger, healthier look.

Even those without oily skin need to moisturize. Moisturizerhelps keep the skin hydrated and should be applied after each cleans-ing, both in the morning and before an individual goes to sleep atnight.

(ARA) - Age means different things to dif-ferent people. What some might think ofas "old", others may view as "young." Topresent a youthful image to the world, making adjustments to your appearanceis key.

To project the right kind ofyouthful image, it's important to knowhow to avoid going too far. A commonmistake is dressing too young in an effortto avoid looking too old. Striking a bal-ance between embracing current, youth-ful trends and adding your own style willcreate a more balanced look.

To give your look an age-appro-priate revision, get started with thesesteps.

    * Hair. One of the first signs of age isgray hair. Hair dye is a solution thatseems to help minimize the agingprocess, but for many people, dyeing isa costly solution. Consider trying an allnatural supplement like Rise-n-Shine'sall natural Go Away Gray pills, whichuses the enzyme catalase to bring backhair's natural color. Catalase, produced

naturally by the body during youth, slow-ly begins to deplete as the years wearon. Catalase breaks down hydrogen per-oxide, which is naturally produced in thebody and which bleaches hair gray. GoAway Gray also comes in shampoo andconditioner form, so fighting grays iseasy for everyone.* Clothes. Both men and women canbenefit from bringing a bit of modernityinto their wardrobes. It isn't necessary topore over fashion magazines and culti-vate an eye for haute couture. Seekfresh takes on items that never go out ofstyle, such as a button down in the latestcolor trend. Don't go for too much embel-lishment, as it can look overdone. Fitsand cuts change as years pass, anditems as simple as white T-shirts canlook outdated just by having an olderstyle collar. When shopping, don't beafraid to ask questions; many storesoffer complimentary personal shoppingservices that can help in the quest tolook younger.* Accessories. Clothes provide apalette, but accessories add interest. It's

extremely easy to fall into the trapof buying items that are too juve-nile, but it's just as easy to pick upitems that age your look.Accessories that are all about func-tion, with no thought given to style, are a quick way to look older, butfrivolous details like bows, ruffles, whimsical prints and tons of pock-ets take things in the other direc-tion. Look for middle ground insleek, understated items made with qual-ity materials. For a fun yet classy look, rely on accessories to add a pop of color, rather than using them to make a bigstatement.* Skin. Your face is the first thing peoplenotice about you, but it is also the bodypart most prone to the aging process. Agood skin care regimen is important, ofcourse, but having an extra helper tomaintain the look of skin is ideal. By tak-ing a skin-supporting supplement likeWrinkle Remedy, the facial area canbegin to look youthful again. WrinkleRemedy contains important nutrients andantioxidants (like collagen, reservatrol

and alpha lipoic acid) which all help inmaintaining a natural, youthful look.Another way to refresh skin's appear-ance is to adopt a new beauty routine.Less really is more when it comes toachieving a natural, youthful look. Stopby a makeup counter and ask for sug-gestions - or even a makeover - that willbe the perfect finishing touch.

It has been said that age is allabout attitude. While that remains true, appearance also conveys attitude, soshow everyone that looks are not onlyskin deep. For more information aboutnatural supplements that support ayouthful, natural appearance, visitwww.wakeupontime.com.
