The award is a result of the hospital’s efforts to keep care consistent with the latest scientific guidelines from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. Physicians and nurses who cared for patients in Centerpoint’s ER that gave tPA to patients in less than 60 minutes were honored on May 25, 2012, alongside the EMS providers and the patients who received care. The American Heart Association recommends hospitals pursue treating 50 percent of patients in 60 minutes or less. Thus far in 2012, Centerpoint has treated 78 percent of its patients in less than 60 minutes. Lab turnaround time is 39 minutes with CT turnaround time of 30 minutes. Centerpoint’s 2012 average door-to-needle time was 59 minutes with the fastest time at 34 minutes. All of these life-saving tasks were completed without increasing adverse events. Centerpoint is proud to announce the following recipients of the Frist Humanitarian Award – Mary Ann Thompson, receiving the volunteer award; Kristi Bass, Physical Therapist, receiving the employee award; and Bridget McCandless, MD, receiving the physician award. “The Frist Humanitarian Awards celebrate individuals whose achievements are an inspiration for all HCA caregivers, volunteers and employees, and reinforce our most important values,” said HCA chairman and CEO Richard M. Bracken. Established in 1971, the awards honor outstanding individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. The Frist Humanitarian Awards are given annually in recognition of the caring spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr., a founder of HCA. Employees, volunteers and medical staff members who demonstrate commitment and dedication to providing care and humanitarianism are selected from around the country, and honorees are recognized at the local level. To receive the national Frist Humanitarian Award is the corporation's highest honor. It recognizes individuals whose daily dedication and care giving epitomize the highest standards of quality and personal commitment. Open Heart Surgery Program Receives Highest RaitingCenterpoint’s Cardiac Surgery Program has been awarded the highest national ranking – 3 stars – from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for 2011. The STS comprehensive rating system compares the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country and only 14 percent of hospitals nationwide received this year’s STS 3-star rating.

“We are very pleased to receive this recognition from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons,” says Carolyn Caldwell, Centerpoint Medical Center CEO. “Our patients and community deserve the best care and this recognition clearly places Centerpoint Medical Center among the top cardiac surgery programs in the nation. Receiving this recognition shows our commitment to providing the best cardiovascular care for our community.”

Binnicker and Bennett Retire After Combined 55 Years of ServiceLarry Binnicker, Director of Volunteers and Chaplain Services, announced his retirement from Centerpoint Medical Center effective May 11, 2012. He retires after serving 30 years with Independence Regional and Centerpoint Medical Center.

Kathy Bennett, QI Coordinator, announced her retirement from Centerpoint Medical Center effective May 25, 2012. She retires after serving 25 years with Independence Regional and Centerpoint Medical Center.

STS developed this comprehensive rating system to allow for nationwide comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals. The system analyzes many different national cardiac surgical data categories on a yearly basis to determine which hospitals meet its stringent qualifications for the 3-star rating. This data includes avoidance of mortality, avoidance of major complications, use of arteries as bypass grafts and assuring that all appropriate (evidence-based) medications are given pre- and post-operatively.

A non-profit organization, the STS represents more than 5,400 surgeons, researchers and allied health professionals worldwide who are dedicated to ensuring the best possible heart, lung, esophageal and other surgical procedures for the chest. Founded in 1964, the mission of STS is to enhance the ability of cardiothoracic surgeons to provide the highest quality patient care through education, research and advocacy.
