The holidays are meant to be a joyful time of celebration with family and friends.

But often, all that celebrating – and the work it entails behind the scenes – can lead to some serious holiday stress.

According to nutrition expert Gloria Tsang, registered dietician and founder of HealthCastle.com, foods can be used to calm the nerves, rather than a per-son resorting to popping a pill, or try-ing to cram “relaxing” activities into an already over-packed schedule.

“We all have certain foods that just make us feel good,” Tsang says. “But there are also foods that really do have calming properties based on how their specific nutrients are used by the body.”

Here are HealthCastle.com’s top five recommended foods to calm those fraz-zled holiday nerves:

Whole-grain pasta/popcornThese good carbs can boost serotonin (the “feel-good” brain chemical) to help reduce stress. Use whole grains to give your favourite comfort food pasta an extra serving of soothe.

the right teaJust holding a warm mug can calm us down, but not if it’s full of caffeine. Green, white and black tea contain half the caffeine of coffee, and are loaded with beneficial flavonoid compounds, too.

The holidays can be a surprisingly stressful time. But by adding these top stress-busting foods to your diet, you can calm your nerves and reduce your stress levels. That should help keep your holidays merry and bright, and start the New Year off with a regimen that really works.

“IMMIGRANTS stories of Vancouver’s People” explores the many immigrant groups who came to Vancouver over the past century and a half. From the Americans who fl ocked north during the great gold rushes of the 1850s and ‘60s to the Vietnamese who fl ed a war-ravaged homeland by boat in the 1970s, and everything in between, IMMIGRANTS tells the stories of our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and beyond. It explores the rea-sons why they left their homelands, be it war, famine, economic downturn or wanderlust, and why they wound up choosing Canada.

This hard cover book is fi lled with more than 280 glossy pages. It’s packed with wonderful heartwarming stories as well as photos that will be treasured for years to come.

Now that the cold months are here, it is easier to stay inside and be inactive. Add the holiday season with Christmas and New Year’s into the mix, and it’s even easier to gain that unwanted weight.

In fact, the average person gains one pound per year. Cold weather is no excuse to stay inside and be lazy. Beat that uncomfortable weight gain this winter with these tips:

indoor Winter exercise ideasWorkout DVDs: Workout DVDs are

an inexpensive and fun way to stay in shape. From circuit training and mar-tial arts to step aerobics, there’s a win-ter workout for everyone.

Resistance Training: Push-ups, squats, lunges, bicep curls, triceps dips, and military presses are a great way to battle the bulge and tone muscles while preventing the onset of osteoporosis.

Yoga and Pilates: Both of these workouts are great for alleviating stress and tension, while toning and conditioning. They also improve blood circulation and oxygen flow.

Outdoor Winter Fitness ideas Jogging or Walking: These activities

will get you in great shape quickly, and can easily be done in winter weather -

you just need to bundle up!Hiking: Hit the trails this winter to

get some exercise and enjoy our beauti-ful scenery. Be sure to check weather conditions before heading out, and pack all the necessary gear.

Ice-skating/Ice Hockey: The Lower Mainland has local ice rinks both inside and outdoors. Grab your friends for an exciting day on the ice. Challenge them

and whoever wins has to treat the other team to hot cocoa.

Skiing & Snowboarding: If you’re close to a mountain range, there’s no better way to keep up your winter fit-ness than to hit the slopes. Both skiing and snowboarding are great cardiovas-cular exercises that tone as well.

Our metabolisms start to slow down from about age 25 on. each day our body needs a minimum amount of energy to function; this is called our Basal Metabolic rate (or BMr). Your BMr varies depending on your activity levels, muscle mass and age.

any calories above and beyond your BMr get stored as fat. Many people consider holidays as an escape from their routines and healthy habits such as eating high calorie foods and taking a reprise from the gym and exercise routine, and to indulge in more of the holiday’s goodies.

What are you going to do about these extra calories? Well, walking is a phenomenal form of exercise. You get your heart rate elevated while working some of the biggest muscles in your body – your legs. if you are going to eat more than you should, then burn some extra calories to lessen the blow of weight gain. dai Manuel is ceO and partner of retail chain fitness town inc.

Charity beginS at hOMe… oR on thE RoaD!by Helen Peterson

Accomplishment is when you use your extra strength to help someone else, rather than to get to the top first. – Donald Ernest Mansell

I’m not sure who this Mansell guy is, but he certainly has a good point.

Somewhere down the line, we became a society filled with com-petition. The Olympics. Professio-nal sports. Even for the movies – it’s all about the Oscar “race,” as in, who will win the coveted golden statuette?

We’re racing around trying to get there first, make the most money and win at all costs.

But what if you could barely get out of bed and put your clothes on? What if your life was filled with medical appointment after wait list after surgery date after rehabilita-tion after side effect, followed by… lost income and lack of indepen-dence?

For people in certain circum-stances, just getting through life

daily, never mind getting to the top, is all they can handle. So it’s up to the rest of society to help in any way possible.

Giving money to your favouri-te charity is a great way to begin. Another standout contribution is to volunteer your time to help at a non-profit by doing office work, driving, assisting with events or simply visiting those who need a pick-me-up.

There’s also a great way to help out your favourite charity, and get really fit at the same time. Do a walk or run! Every year there are many health groups that are rai-sing funds in a number of ways, and by taking part in the training

they offer, you will make friends, all while having fun.

From the annual Terry Fox run to the Harry’s Spring Run Off 8K for prostate cancer, you will use your newly-found strength to real-ly help others. Mansell would be proud!

There’s no need to travel all the way to Phuket to experience the world class healing techniques from Thailand. Smile Thai Wellness has just launched in downtown Vancouver this fall, and is bringing the best of Thai culture and long standing traditional therapies to the west coast.

Described by some as a “serene garden atmosphere in the midst of a hectic city,” Smile Thai Wellness is the ideal setting to pursue comfort and relaxation through healing arts dating back thousands of years in the Asian culture.

This wellness sanctuary not only focuses on holistic massage therapy, but provides an all-encompassing array of wellness services designed to awaken, energize and balance the body, including acupuncture, reflex-ology, registered massage therapy,

Thai yoga exercise and meditation classes.

The founder of Smile Thai Well-ness, Austin Sakchai, learned the art of Thai Healing as passed down by his family in Bangkok, and much like tradition, learned Thai massage, yoga and meditation when he was a monk in Thailand.

He says, “I could see the benefits and improvement in people’s well-being from using the Thai massage, yoga and meditation techniques taught to me by the Thai monks at the temple. This inspired me to open Smile Thai Wellness to pro-mote holistic therapies and share my experience in Vancouver.”

Many people describe Traditional Thai massage as “lazy man’s yoga,” a hybrid of kneading and stretching, yoga and acupressure, where the therapists use their hands, knees, legs and feet to move people into a sequence of yoga-like positions.

This can provide physical, mental, and psychological benefits includ-

ing helping to detox the body and boost the immune system, building an emotional balance, and relieving stress and anxiety.

So whether you’re seeking a tra-ditional East Meets West treatment to alleviate general body tension, or simply want to embrace the world with a newfound and refreshed ener-gy, Smile Thai Wellness is sure to take you on a trip to experience Thailand – without leaving the city.

To preview the services and learn more, go to www.smilethaiwell-ness.com.
