NARRATIVE
6. Local Program Successes
The 100 Black Men of North Metro leveraged a collaborative, coordinated approach for this important program. We held mentoring sessions segmented across different times and in some cases dates to be able to reach mentees. In conjunction to reviewing the materials and bringing in guest speakers, we incorporated our own healthy challenge to include push-ups for upper body strength and squat thrusts for aerobic capacity. Challenging the mentees and providing prizes on a monthly basis kept the mentees engaged. Posting these winners in a Winner’s Circle brought out the competitive spirit within the mentees and kept the program interesting for them. We also provided all content on our website to allow the students to print out information, review information after our sessions, and have a source of reference for the future. As evidenced by the video clip incorporated with this report, the knowledge of our mentees has definitely increased as the video spoke about the health benefits of some of the food he was preparing. Addressing this challenge with this age group is absolutely the thing to do and keep doing. We applaud for Coke for taking up this challenge and supporting one of the core tenants of the 100 Black Men of America.

8. Please provide a summary of your Marketing & PR activity.
Our primary source of marketing this activity was our website, Facebook and Twitter accounts. We have attached screen shots from our website that was created specifically for this initiative. We have done a press release to promote the successes of this program to potential sponsors throughout the community. Most of our communication efforts were directed at the participants during the program. We leveraged online texting to send reminders and share information with the students. This allowed us to “broadcast” texts to all of our participants at the same time. Outwardly facing PR activities were limited to Facebook and Twitter. North Metro currently has
9. Local Program Learning (things to do differently)
Find a different way to manage the materials. We found it too cumbersome to pass out learning materials so we scanned all of the lessons and posted them on our website. The mentees were able to print them in advance of the session and it saved a tremendous amount on printing costs. Secondly when working with partners, they often have their own materials packaged for presentation which covers the same information as ours does. We should be flexible and allow presentation of “like” materials which will all chapters to leverage more partners and not just those that are willing to present our curriculum.
10. Program Recommendations
100 Black Men of North Metro – Final Report Page 8 of 27
The duration of the program is probably a little short. In order to change habits which have taken years to develop, having more time to affect the mentees and parents would be even more effective. Something along the lines of 1 year. The other thing that would be extremely effective would be the option of disseminating coupons for purchasing healthy and/or organic foods. The cost of healthy foods far outweighs the cost of unhealthy foods which is one of the fundamental problems.

APPENDIX A: NORTH METRO FITNESS CHALLENGE DATA & RESULTS
The North Metro Chapter facilitated a Healthy Fitness challenge based upon push-ups (for upper body strength) and squat thrusts (for aerobic capacity). Over 90 youths went through the educational component of the program and were asked to participate in the Healthy Challenge as well. Over the 5 month period, we had approximately 41 youths that participated consistently across that time period. We observed increases in both upper body strength and cardiovascular capacity. We even had youths that “significantly” increased both their aerobic capacity and upper body strength. “Significant” by our standard was any increase of 150% or better.

100 Black Men of North Metro Tackles Youth Health Problems Head On
In partnership with the National 100 Black of America, Inc. and the Coca-Cola Foundation, the 100 Black Men
of North Metro, Inc. was selected as one of seven chapters nationally to assist the Coke Foundation in
addressing some of the leading causes of health risk in youths today. Because of the increasing rates of obesity,
unhealthy eating habits, and physical inactivity, we may see the first generation of children that will be less
healthy and have shorter life expectancy than their parents. It was this fact that motivated the North Metro
Chapter to mobilize a special team to capitalize on the opportunity to promote this issue and most importantly –
attack this issue. In collaboration the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club in Lawrenceville, GA and the Michael A.
Grant Boys and Girls Club in Austell, GA, North Metro shared vital information on healthy food choices,
exercises, and the importance of overall health and fitness to over 800 youths. A portion of these youths also
participated in a Fitness challenge designed to increase cardiovascular health and upper body strength.
Deficiency in one or both of these areas is a primary cause of obesity, asthma, diabetes and other illnesses that
lead to long-term health challenges. These issues disproportionally affect African-American youths. The
program is in its final stages and was tremendously successful. 95% of the participants in the Fitness
Challenged increased their capacity in both areas. Over 25% of the participants increased by 100% or more.
These actions will place these youths on a healthier path and a healthier life.
The 100 Black Men of North Metro, Inc. has been serving the Metro Atlanta area for over 20 years. With an
emphasis in Cobb, Gwinnett and North Fulton counties, they have programs for both youths and adults related
to Education, Mentoring, Health & Wellness and Economic Empowerment. Directly mentoring almost 600
youths every month through their education and mentoring programs, the North Metro Chapter continues to be
a beacon of leadership for the community. For more information, please visit www.northmetro100.org.
