Investigation 4- Heat TransferEnduring Understanding:

The movement of heat energy in and out of the atmosphere is an important element of weather.

Learning Goals: I will measure the heating and cooling of earth materials when moved into and out of

sunshine. I will explain how radiant energy from the Sun heats up solid and liquid materials.

I will use thermometers to measure the temperature of materials.I will design and conduct experiments to observe heat transfer through multiple

materials in terms of molecular activity.I will describe how the atmosphere I heated.

Quick WriteQuick Write• What is radiant energy?

• How does radiation affect the surface of Earth?

Radiation ReviewRadiation Review• Visible light is the main kind of

energy from the Sun that heats Earth. Energy is transferred when light energy is absorbed by molecules in Earth’s surface, causing them to move faster, which increases the temperature.

Energy Transfer ChallengeEnergy Transfer Challenge• I need some warm water, but the water I have

here is too coldcold. I thought I would mix it this hot water, but the hothot water has salt (red food coloring) in it.

• How can I warm up this coldcold water without mixing them together? (Question!)

Energy Transfer ChallengeEnergy Transfer Challenge• Were you able to raise the temperature of a

sample of water?

• How were you able to do that?

• How did heat transfer from the hot water to the cold water?

Page 10: Heat Transfer. Investigation 4- Heat Transfer Enduring Understanding: The movement of heat energy in and out of the atmosphere is an important element.

ConductionConductionTHERE IS NO COLDCOLD, only heat. (Sort of)When you hold an ice cube, you are transferring

heat from your hand to the ice cube.

HeatHeat is motion of atomsatoms and moleculesmolecules. The greatergreater the motion, the moremore heat energy there is in a solid, liquid, or gas.

Page 11: Heat Transfer. Investigation 4- Heat Transfer Enduring Understanding: The movement of heat energy in and out of the atmosphere is an important element.

ConductionConduction• When material 1 (hothot salt water) with

lots of heatheat, or molecular motion, comes in contact with material 2 (coldcold water) which has less molecular motion, the molecules from material 1 bang into the molecules in material 2 and get them moving faster.

Page 12: Heat Transfer. Investigation 4- Heat Transfer Enduring Understanding: The movement of heat energy in and out of the atmosphere is an important element.

ConductionConduction• As a result, molecules in material 2 now have

increased molecular motion (heatheat) so material 2 is now hotter.our coldcold water is now warmwarm!

• Also, the molecules in material 1 have less motion (heatheat) so material 1 is now cooler our hothot water is now warmwarm too!

ConductionConductionEnergy transfer happens between molecules or

atoms when they come in contact.

This kind of heat transfer is conductionconduction. Heat can transfer by conductionconduction from atom to atom in a material, or between two different materials when their atoms or molecules make contact.

transmitted in the form of rays or waves (marshmallow and flame)

ConductionConduction - energy transfer by contact (pancakes or feet)
