Those of us with school age children will be turning our attention to what we can do to keep our young ones occupied over the long summer holiday. Luckily, here in Surrey Heath, we have plenty of options to keep young people of all ages active and occupied whatever the weather.

Our Greenspace team is providing a multitude of nature-based activities, ranging from mini-beast safaris in the undergrowth to leisurely walks along Basingstoke Canal. Many of these activities take place at Frimley Lodge Park which is also playing host to the first ever ‘Frimley Lodge Live’ music festival! Go to pages 10 and 11 for more info.

One activity that continues to be extremely popular is swimming. The Arena Leisure Centre is keen to encourage more people to take the plunge this summer with great offers and discounts. Find out how to ‘dive in’ on page 23.

In September, Camberley will become the centre of the cycling universe when it plays host to the start of the penultimate stage of the Tour of Britain. Although not yet confirmed, we are hopeful that some of the big names such as Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins will be taking part. Find out more on page 5.

The Tour of Britain, together with June’s RMA Freedom of the Borough Parade and the forthcoming Classic Car Show, all contribute to Camberley’s reputation as a vibrant and attractive destination. As previously mentioned, Surrey Heath Borough Council is working hard to deliver its vision for ‘our town’. You can find out more on page 6.

Have a great summer!

Great opportunities for businesses

camberley town centre

This vision is in line with the recently published Area Action Plan and continues to promote Camberley town centre as a thriving environment for living, shopping, leisure and evening entertainment.

Delivering this Vision will enable Camberley to “step-up” to become a more regionally significant town centre, attracting even more high quality retailers and building on its reputation as a location for major events such as the recent RMA Freedom of Borough parade and the forthcoming Tour of Britain cycle race in September.

The Vision also incorporates two of the town’s other great strengths, its strong military heritage, and its abundance of quality parks and green space, making it a very clean, green and safe environment to spend time. All of this, combined with the compact easily walkable nature of the town and predictable travelling times via road, train and bus provides the opportunity to make, what is already a great town centre even better.

The vision also sets out ambitious plans for how the council, working with partners, will deliver a “gateway” to the town on the A30 London Road as well as the creation of a new town square and a refurbished Mall shopping centre. This will be in addition to the £200 million planned investment into local transport infrastructure, focusing in

particular on improvements to the M3 motorway, the Meadows gyratory and the London Road (A30). To find out more about the vision for Camberley you can watch the specially produced video on the council website by following this link: www.surreyheath.gov.uk/camberley

Leader of Surrey Heath Borough Council, Cllr Moira Gibson said: “The Freedom of the Borough symbolises the highest honour that the borough can give to a military organisation and cements the historic relationship between Camberley, Surrey Heath and the Royal Military Academy.“It was fantastic to see so many members of the public, not only turn out to see the parade, but also expressing genuine warmth and support for our armed forces.”The Freedom of the Borough bolsters longstanding links between the Borough and the Royal Military Academy, enhanced recently by the establishment of the Surrey Heath Community Covenant in 2012, which is a voluntary statement of mutual support between a civilian community and its local armed forces.

Saturday Club at the Windle Valley Day CentreSince pledging to become a Dementia Friendly Organisation earlier in the year, the Community Services team at Surrey Heath has been working hard to increase the range of services available for people with memory problems living within the borough.

Earlier this year, a new Saturday Club opened at the Windle Valley Centre, Bagshot. The club is aimed at providing support and social activities for carers and the cared for, who may have received a diagnosis of dementia. Meeting every Saturday between 2 and 5pm, it provides a friendly, lively and welcoming atmosphere where carers can chat and make new friends, whilst their loved ones are enjoying a range of tailored activities; together with plentiful

cups of tea and cake! The club has proved to be very popular, both with staff and club members.Saturday team leaders Aline Poulter and Barbara Ball jointly run the club each week. They told Heathscene: “We get real satisfaction from knowing that people have made new friends, had some fun and companionship and gone home looking forward to coming back next week. We know they’ve had a great time, which is

exactly what the club is all about.”Saturday Club costs £6 per person per week. For more information please contact Aline on 01276 707659 or email: [email protected]

Funded by Surrey County Council, the centre will provide a space for people who have received a diagnosis of dementia. It will offer information, help and advice from a range of partner organisations, including Surrey County Council, The Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK.The borough council will also showcase within the Wellbeing Centre, its’ range of Telecare equipment which is available free of charge to residents if they rent a pendant alarm. The Wellbeing Centre and Windle Valley Centre will be further enhanced during the summer by the opening of a new Memory Garden which has been funded by keysafe company Supra, after the council won first prize in their community project competition. The garden will feature a range of plants with sensory qualities such as scent, foliage and texture; designed and planted by the council’s Greenspace team, in conjunction with Hampton Court Silver award winning designer Kate Turner. Community portfolio holder Councillor Vivienne Chapman said: “We are delighted to be able to show our commitment to becoming a dementia friendly organisation. Housing association tenants will have the opportunity this summer to look for potential new homes as part of an exciting property exchange event.

Surrey Heath’s ‘Home Swap’ Shop

The ‘Home Swap’ Shop will be coming to Camberley on Thursday 28 August, hosted in partnership with Surrey Heath Borough Council and local housing association Accent South. The exhibition style event will give housing association tenants the chance to see what homes are available to swap in Surrey Heath.Tenants may need to move to a different home for a number of reasons, including needing more space for a growing family or less space after children have grown up and moved on. Recent changes to welfare benefits have also led to some people needing to find a home more suitable for their needs.

One of the ways for housing association tenants to find the right home is to ‘swap’ with another housing association tenant. There are certain rules about who can swap, and the housing association must give their permission. However, the basic principle is that two tenants meet, view each other’s home, and agree to swap.Tenants are invited to attend the event at Camberley Theatre to advertise their home, and look for a swap. Further details and how to advertise a property can be found at www.surreyheath.gov.uk/housing or by emailing [email protected]

or [email protected] You can also contact the Housing Team on 01276 707100 with any questions. We look forward to seeing you on the day!

Why not join the Camberley and District University of the Third Age (U3A)?

Young at heart, and looking for new interests?Aimed at older people no longer in full time employment, the U3A provides an opportunity to learn, to do something new and to make friends. The U3A is a sharing of experience and interests. Locally, the Camberley and District U3A has over 1500 members and offers about 100 group activities. These range from the academic, such as astronomy and history, through to thoughtful, such as book clubs and musical appreciation, to the physically active - belly dancing and ten-pin bowling included. A new group is ‘MOTO’ (Members On Their Own) for people who don’t have anyone to chat to at home. The groups meet during the day, one or more times a month. They gather in halls, private houses and

Over the course of a day more than 40 commercial vehicles were stopped. Several fixed penalty notices were issued by enforcement officers, including five £300 fines for waste carrying offences. It is a legal requirement for commercial waste carriers to register, hold a Waste Carriers Licence and keep a record of the waste carried and its disposal. Three formal notices requiring the production of a Waste Carrier Licence within seven days were issued and anyone not complying could face prosecution.Temporary Police Sergeant Chris Tinney said: “Our aim was to tackle those who both carry commercial waste illegally and who cannot account for where they dispose of their waste such as brick rubble and tree cuttings.

“Illegally disposing of waste not only incurs a cost to the tax payer but it also places road users at risk when rubbish is dumped directly onto a carriageway. I hope this operation sends a clear message to potential fly-tippers that the illegal movement and disposal of waste will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly.”Surrey Heath’s Executive Head of Community, Tim Pashen said: “Fly-tipping is a total disregard for the environment. To combat this inconsiderate behavior, enforcement exercises are made in conjunction with the police and other agencies in order to check the legality of trade vehicles. We

Neighbourhood WatchNeighbourhood Watch is about people looking out for each other, crossing barriers of age, race and class to create real communities that benefit everyone.

The basic idea is simple – neighbours join together to keep watch on each other’s homes and their immediate surroundings. They may also report suspicious persons and unusual events to the police.Starting a Watch can have many benefits:• It brings us closer to the people

who live around us. • It results in people looking after

each other in a way that was more common in the past.

• It encourages us to take greater care of families and possessions.

• It cuts the risk of people turning to crime and leaves us feeling safer.

Currently in Surrey Heath there are more than 306 Active Watches, covering some 9,500 properties. The website www.surreyheathnw.co.uk contains details of all local Watches, enabling residents to check whether there is an active one in their street. Also included is crime prevention advice, links to the Police, showing details of the Borough team, and an archive of the quarterly newsletter HeathWatch. The programme for the Crime Prevention trailer at local community events is also featured.

Chief Executive of Surrey Heath Borough Council, Karen Whelan said: “I’m sure all those who came along would agree the lovely weather, huge turnout and superb atmosphere made this the best Surrey Heath Show yet!“Everyone in Frimley Lodge Park seemed to be having a great time and I’m pleased so many enjoyed the day. “We owe a lot to volunteers who make up the Surrey Heath Show Committee who worked hard with council officers to deliver this fantastic community event.

More than 8,000 people descended on Frimley Lodge Park on a sunny Saturday in May for a fun packed day featuring live bands, car displays, children’s activities, a dog show and much more.
