Personality Profile Art was born in Jersey City, son of John and Irene Cookfair and moved to Buffalo at a young age. The day after graduating from Hutchinson High School he enlisted in the Navy and served on the U.S.S. Valencia (AKA-81) in the Pacific. After the Navy, he returned to Buffalo. He met his future wife Joan, at Beaver Island a few years later. It was love at first sight. They dated for a year before marrying. Art returned to school part-time while supporting his family, receiving an A.S. in Chemistry from Erie Community Technical Institute, and a B.S. in Geology and Chemistry and Doctorate in Education, both from UB. Art worked as a patent examiner in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He went on to practice patent law in Corning, N.Y. and WNY for several years and co-authored a book on patents for inventors and engineers. He also taught high school earth science and college courses in environmental science. Art loves to travel. He considers himself lucky to have traveled to countries all around the world. One of his favorite career memories is the Fulbright Award he received that allowed him to spend six months in Cyprus working with the Ministry of Education. His favorite trips are the ones he took with his wife Joan. His favorite travel activities are snorkeling in coral reefs and getting to know the locals. Art has three children, all of whom live locally with their spouses and visit often. He also has six grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. He’s enjoying life at Heathwood and all the wonderful people who live here. Heathwood Emphasis We hope you are enjoying our new look at both facility locations. At Penfield, we replaced our flooring in the main lobby corridors. Our next step will be to install new carpet in the main dining room, library, and living room in the next few months. Many of you had suggested this on our customer satisfaction surveys last October and this project has been in the works since that time. At Williamsville, our three-story, 42-apartment addition is finally making significant progress. This 29,000 square foot addition will be comprised of 12 studios, 27 one-bedroom and three two- bedroom apartments. This addition will enable us to eventually complete the interior renovations of converting private rooms to 19 suite apartments in our existing building. When the project is finished we will expand our footprint to 122 apartments/ rooms. Thank you for your patience during the construction. As of now, please continue to park in the adjacent lot; any changes will be immediately communicated. We are very excited to have a new face-lift sometime early this summer! March is National Social Work Month, and we recognize everything Case Manager Tricia Low does for residents and families. We are happy that she is part of the Heathwood family. In recognition of March 30, Doctors’ Day, we would like to honor Dr. Jim Collins, nurse practitioner Carolyn Montgomery of Mobile Primary and Nicole Seitaj of Family Choice for all the care they provide to our residents. There are many exciting activities planned this month including many that celebrate the “wee bit” of Irish in all of us.
