    Hedon Penny Throwing

The Hedon 'Penny Throwing' event is always one of the first civic duties carriedout each year by the new Hedon Mayorfollowing their appointment.

The event is supposed to be steeped in history and is a parody of the days whenHedon was a rotten borough with people being offered money to vote for a

    particular Mayoral candidate.

After agreeing to vote for a candidate for payment (and after signing for your vote inthose days) the new Mayors agents would visit to give you your pay-off!

Today the event is a real fun occasion with the pennies offered or thrown to localchildren by the town Mayor and civic dignitaries. All local children are invited to bringtheir parents and take part.

The penny throwing starts at 7:00pm outside the Town Hall on Thursday 19th May. Itis a good idea to get there a bit earlier and make sure you get a good spot!

PAULL: TRANSFORMING COMMUNITY SPIRIT AND REGENERATION

PAULL a village of approximately only 500people, has undergone something of atransformation in community spirit in recentyears:

The St Andrew Church faced closure in2007 unless funding for urgent roof repairscould be found, but in January last year thechurch was blessed by the Archbishop ofYork and villagers praised for theircommunity efforts to keep it open. Thechurch also now runs its own pop-in cafethat can be used as a base for those takingpart in the village's unique Paull HeritageTrail.

The Village Hall was also generally run-down and not used to its full potential, butnow the Hall has a packed calendar ofevents and has ambitious plans to re-builditself as an iconic centre of local communityactivity.

The catalyst for these events hasundoubtedly been the enthusiasm and drive

of Village Hall and St Andrew ChurchTreasurer, Paul Cross. His passion for thearea, its people and heritage has certainlyinspired other villagers, ex-pats andsupporters to get involved.

The new Village Hall website is alsosymbolic of the new lease of community lifeemanating from Paull. Find it at:

    http://paullvillagehall.wordpress.com/

NINETY SEVEN (97) people attended a publicmeeting in Paull on 27th January 2011 andvoted unanimously for the plans for a new350,000 Village Hall.

The new hall would include the realisation of

an idea, suggested by a local resident, of asecond level viewing gallery where spectacularpanoramic views of the River Humber wouldbe enjoyed.

The magnificent turnout for the meeting fromsuch a small village reveals the commitment ofthe local villagers to the idea of a new hall as afocal point for their local community.

It is considered that the initial design isexcellent... the inclusion of the balcony withbalastrade, this is a positive design feature, andit makes good use of the adjacent view acrossthe Humber Esturary, which is a special featureof the Paull Conservation Area

    Area Conservation Officer

A Guide Book to the Paull Heritage Trailhas been written by villager Paul Cross and edited bylocal historian John Markham, which takes you around the trail via marker posts. Childrenfrom Paull Primary School have been involved in helping produce the marker post images.

    BEATING AUSTERITY?

As people tighten their belts in thesetough times, certain luxuries have had togo out the window.

According to research almost two-thirds ofus plan to cut back on eating and drinkingout this year. 61% plan to spend less on

eating and drinking out and 42% ofdrinkers are spending less in the pub than8 months ago.

So what are restaurants and bars doing inHedon, Preston and Paull to try to beatausterity and get people munching andsupping? Are they offering discountedservice? Or special promotions?

We are doing a feature on Beating

Austerity in HU12 and want to collectstories from local businesses andcustomers. Find out more from:

BAD NEWS: Potholes can be more than a nuisance. They can be a danger to cyclists andothers. In the UK, theres an average of one road defect for every 110 metres (360ft) of road.

Despite receiving a 1.1m Government grant to repair potholes, the East Riding Council hasclaimed that far greater resources are needed to ensure that repairs and maintenance take place. The total cost of mending potholes, broken paving slabs, crumbling surfacing materials, worn-outhighways, bridges and footpaths has been estimated to be at least 316.5m with the problemhaving been aggravated due to the impact of the severe freezing weather in December andJanuary.

However, the problem may be even worse due to the fact that lots of needed repairs remainunreported. The Council carries out structural surveys on a regular basis and defects arerecorded to allow repairs to be scheduled. However, some problems can only be identified ifsomeone notices them and reports them.

If the Council don't know about a pothole problem then they can't fill it in! So if you know ofa pothole - report it!

There are many ways to report problems. But one web-based service makes it easy: FixMyStreetat www.fixmystreet.com/ involves you putting in your post code and searching for your localproblem. You log the problem on a map and verify its real via e-mail, and then its reported directlyto the East Riding Council.

You can also email potholes direct to the Council: [email protected] .

So what is considered to be an "urgent" pothole problem? The Council has this to say on itswebsite:

It is difficult to precisely define criteria. A good guideline is that a pothole will beconsidered to be dangerous if it is more than 40mm deep on a main road."

....That's just over 1.5 inches deep.

    Potholes crisis made worse by

    unreportedproblems

GOOD NEWS:Spending on Sure Start Children'sCentres in Holderness, which aim to give childrenfrom birth to 5-years old the "best possible start inlife", is expected to increase during the next financialyear. This is welcome news in Hedon and Withernsea, considering that elsewhere in the country there arefears that up to 250 centres may close within one yearand 3,100 centres will have a reduced budget.

THE BAD NEWS..... AND THE GOOD NEWS: TWO STORIES
