HEIMATKALENDER 1991 JAHRBUCH DER BESSARABIENDDEUTSCHEN 42nd Year Index 42 Years of Heimatkalender of the Bessarabian Germans 1949-1990 17/91 (Bess91) Source for Exemplary Historical Research Robert Kienzle The group of people known as the Bessarabian Germans began in 1814, when about 8,000 immigrants came from primarily south German regions at the invitation of the Russian czars, to create 25 mother colonies in South Russia. These original colonies eventually expanded to 153 villages over a period of 125 years and included 87,000 residents. The existence of these blossoming communities, however came to an abrupt end in 1940 after the establishment of the Stalin-Hitler Agreement. Within several weeks of the occupation of Bessarabia by the Russians, the entire group of people there was resettled in the then German areas in the Warthegau and West Prussia. However, the settlers had to leave these areas and flee further to the west as early as 1945. The largest part of these people has been integrated into Germany today and the remainder has been scattered throughout the world. This group, however, just as always remains very close as a people. The things that bind them together are the newsletters and the yearbooks. The Heimatkalender began 42 years ago and was called: 1949 Yearbook of Germans from Bessarabia and from the Dobrudscha 1950-1962 Bessarabian Heimatkalender 1963-1987 Heimatkalender of the Bessarabian Germans 1988 Heimatkalender – Yearbook of the Bessarabian Germans 1989 Heimatkalender – Yearbook of Germans from Bessarabia The intent of the Kalender has remained faithful in reporting about the chosen homeland of Bessarabia, even thought pictures about the new homeland are occasionally included with those of the old homeland. The 1949 Yearbook was published by the “Bessarabian Work Group for Gathering and Publishing Literature from the Homeland” and from 1950 on by the “Welfare Committee of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bessarabia” in Hannover. In its 42-year history, the Kalender has presented in 8,000 pages more than 1,800 various titles, consisting of documents, reports, experiences, descriptions, poems, etc. Mr. Artur Kräenbring brought forth in the 1960, 1970 and the 1988 editions thematic compilations from the calendars

Robert Kienzle The group of people known as the Bessarabian Germans began in 1814, when about 8,000 immigrants came from primarily south German regions at the invitation of the Russian czars, to create 25 mother colonies in South Russia. The Heimatkalender began 42 years ago and was called:

1949 Yearbook of Germans from Bessarabia and from the Dobrudscha 1950-1962 Bessarabian Heimatkalender 1963-1987 Heimatkalender of the Bessarabian Germans 1988 Heimatkalender – Yearbook of the Bessarabian Germans 1989 Heimatkalender – Yearbook of Germans from Bessarabia

The intent of the Kalender has remained faithful in reporting about the chosen homeland of Bessarabia, even thought pictures about the new homeland are occasionally included with those of the old homeland. Mr. Artur Kräenbring brought forth in the 1960, 1970 and the 1988 editions thematic compilations from the calendars

of 1949-1959, 1960-1969 and 1970-1987. With this index, all the content of the various years has been arranged alphabetically and easy to use. With this format, it will be possible for all who wish to become quickly informed about the lives and influence of this particular group of people who once lived peacefully and successfully among other people elsewhere and have now once again returned to their motherland. With the aid of the index, one is able to easily locate and compile the material needed. One can then request a complete calendar or single photocopies of the desired material from the Welfare Committee of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Bessarabian Germans, Königswörther Strasse 2, 3000 Hannover. Reference: In creating the index, the main idea of the word or article is highlighted and is placed first. Therefore one will find in the index, for example, in the titles “The Saga of the Akkerman Castle” and “The Corn will not ripen again”: Akkerman Burg, The Legend of the Corn, The Corn will not ripen p=Poem
