About Hobart and William Smith CollegesHobart and William Smith Colleges are private, liberal arts institutions located in Geneva, N.Y.—the heart of the Finger Lakes Region. Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women share faculty, facilities and curriculum but maintain separate deans’ offices, athletic programs, student governments and traditions. The Colleges, which have a combined enrollment of 2,272, offer a remarkably broad array of majors and minors with a cross-disciplinary flavor in-tended to better inform both professional and intellectual pursuits. The Colleges also are noted for an ambitious empha-sis on international study and their programs in community service.

The William Smith HeronsSeparate and distinct from their Hobart counterparts, William Smith student-athletes have their own nickname, mascot, organizational structure and budget. The resulting sense of identity and purpose for Heron athletes is unique in the world of women’s college athletics, and is matched by institutional commitment of the resources necessary to give each ath-lete the opportunity to reach her potential and each team to compete at the highest possible level. In fact, Sports Illus-trated for Women recognized William Smith as one of the top small-college athletics programs for women in the United States.

Program PhilosophyWilliam Smith rowing provides opportunities for both experienced and novice rowers to com-pete at the highest level of Division III rowing. Our goal is to help each woman develop into the very best athlete and person she can be. Our coaching staff and team environment provide daily challenges, support, and mentorship. While emphasizing strong rowing fundamentals, we also develop mental strength, leadership skills, and overall athleticism. We believe that through commitment to the sport, respect for teammates, hard work, and good hearts, our oarswomen will achieve the highest levels of academic and athletic excellence.

FacilitiesThe Colleges are located on the western shore of Seneca Lake. Heron rowers launch from the Hellstrom Boathouse on the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. The canal links Cayuga and Seneca lakes, providing five miles of protected, calm water as well as an entry point to Seneca Lake for longer rows. The boathouse is equipped with an indoor training area, workshop, and two boat bays. The team rows eights and fours.

On campus, the Herons train in the RFK Varsity Strength Training Center in Bristol Gym. Dedicated to the Colleges’ student-athletes, the weight room houses state-of-the-art equipment, a plyometrics room, and aerobic machines, for athletes to use to enhance their on-the-water training.

Head Coach Sandra Chu

Sandra Chu was named the head coach of William Smith rowing in July of 2002, following three seasons as an assistant coach of women’s rowing at Kansas State. The 2012 CRCA Division III Coach of the Year has led the Herons to three consecut i ve L iber t y League Championships and back-to-back fourth place finishes at the NCAA Championship.

In her 11 seasons at the helm, Chu has mentored

17 CRCA All-Americans, including seven first team selections, while guiding William Smith to five NCAA Championship bids as a team and one as an at-large eight.

Perhaps more impressive than the team’s on-the-water accomplishments are William Smith’s academic accolades. Chu’s Herons have earned 101 Liberty League All-Academic nods, 37 CRCA Scholar-Athlete awards, and two CoSIDA Academic All-America® awards.

Since 2004, the Herons have garnered the Liberty League Crew of the Year and Novice Crew of the Year awards seven times, while Chu and her assistant have been selected the conference’s Coaching Staff of the Year seven times.

Widely respected in the rowing community, Chu is a former member of the CRCA Board of Directors, the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, and the NCAA Division III Championship Committee.

A 1991 graduate of Princeton, she served as an intern coach for the Tiger women’s rowing team in 1998-99 before joining the Wildcats.

Chu competed as a coxswain for the Tiger varsity crew from 1988 to 1991. An All-Ivy League selection, she earned medals at the EAWRC Sprints Championships in 1989 and 1991 and at the Head of the Charles in 1990.

An accomplished mentor, Chu has coached athletes who have rowed for the men’s and women’s junior U.S. National teams, as well as the Senior Mexican National Team.

Chu earned a master’s degree in English and creative writing from New York University in 1996, and has earned

national recognition for her poems, which have been published in many journals and anthologies.

Tradition William Smith rowing has a long tradition as one of the top Division III programs in the country. Since 1994, the Herons have appeared in 11 NCAA Championships, won 11 New York State Championships, and became the first Division III team to win the Champion International Regatta (now called the ECAC NIRC). They won the inaugural Liberty League Championship in 2004, and secured five more conference titles between 2006 and 2013.

The rowing culture at William Smith focuses on continuing to honor this great tradition by perpetuating the program’s success. To that end, the school provides the Herons with four fall racing opportunities, including the Head of the Charles; and nine spring races, including the Liberty League Championships, the New York State Championships, and the ECAC Championships.

The program has produced 22 CRCA All-Americans, 38 CRCA Scholar-Athletes, and former Herons have gone

on to National Team Development Camps.
