Welcome to

The Acre Cars Stadium

Yes, its derby day and this promises to be a cracker! Today we

welcome our near neighbours and friends from Ware for what

promises to be another great ‘East Herts el Clasico’. Nobody reading

this probably needs reminding of the thrilling 3-3 draw that unfolded

last time these two old rivals came head to head at Wodson Park in

November. If it is also added to the mix that Ware are pushing for

promotion whilst we still need points for the opposite reason then

there is every reason to expect a hugely competitive and atmospheric

game this afternoon.

Inevitably there are many connections between our two clubs in terms

of players and coaches. Most notably, of course, Ware manager Paul

Halsey previously served this club with distinction in the same role and

is deserving of a warm welcome this afternoon in spite of our rivalry.

Hopefully we might all break a record today! The biggest crowd this

season in this division was 414 (for Chertsey Town v Westfield).

Considering that 402 watched the reverse of this fixture a new highest

attendance figure seems possible today. Enjoy what should be a great

game and atmosphere this afternoon.

Ware FC History

The Club was founded in 1892 and although first called Ware Town soon

changed its name to plain Ware FC. This unassuming title makes it probably

the shortest named affiliate of the Football Association and has caused

problems for programme editors and journalists ever since.

In fact, the Club has been anything but unassuming. It has held senior status

from its very beginning, entering the Herts Senior Cup for the first time in

1893, and winning the cup on the first of five occasions in 1899 with a 2-1 win

over Hitchin at St Albans. By this time Ware had been instrumental in

founding the East Herts League and had won its championship on two of the

three times it had been competed for. The club was to win it five more times

before moving on to the North Middlesex League in 1907 and then also to the

Herts County League in 1908. The Championship of the latter came that

season in a three-way play-off against St Albans City and Welwyn.

After the First World War the Club gained a league and cup double with a

second Herts County League Championship and a fourth Herts Senior Cup

win in 1922. The scenes in Ware when the team returned with the Senior Cup

tell us something about the hold that football had on local loyalties at the time.

The local paper reported that "Large crowds awaited the return of the special

train to Ware, everybody being in high spirits. The Cup was marched through

the town in front of a cheering throng." Indeed, it was later recalled that the

cup was taken through the town on subsequent nights and that stops were

made outside public houses where it was charged with beer before being

drained by the crowd.

Shortly after this Ware joined the Spartan League in which they were to enjoy

several successes, winning the Division 2(B) Championship in 1926, Division

1 in 1951 with the highest "goals for" total ever achieved by a club in the

Spartan League, and the Premier Division in 1952. In these later years the

Club also made significant progress in the old Amateur Cup meeting many

famous sides on the way. One of these was Hendon, against whom Ware drew

their largest attendance of 3,800 in the 1st Round in January 1957.

Moving on to the Delphian and then Athenian League, Ware enjoyed another

successful period. Two promotions, two league cup wins and two reserve

championships paved the way for progress in the FA Cup. In this Ware

reached the First Round proper for the first time in 1968 when they travelled

to the then Third Division side Luton Town. The opposition had a 100% home

record but the game was scoreless with 30 minutes to go before a judicious

substitution broke the stalemate and left Ware beaten 6-1 at the final whistle.

In these successful circumstances it was not surprising that Ware pressed for

entry to the expanding Isthmian League. This was achieved for season

1975/76 and they have maintained their place at that level ever since. This is

thanks most recently to their Division 2 Championship season of 2005/6 under

manager Glen Alzapiedi which carried them into Division 1 just before

Division 2 was disbanded. Alzapiedi's side brought further distinction with

another FA Cup First Round appearance in 2007 which saw a narrow home

defeat against Kidderminster Harriers in front of 2,123 spectators, a record for

the current ground at Wodson Park.

Before that a tenth Herts Senior Cup Final in 2001 and another in 2008 have

emphasised the club's long history and continuity. Ware is the first of only

three possible candidates to appear in this final in three separate centuries,

evidence that it is still one of the county's leading clubs.

League form has varied in recent years and after a disappointing period in the

2017/8 season John Dreyer took over as manager. With fortunes improving

John stepped aside and his assistant Paul Halsey has taken over the managerial

reins.

Ware FC pen pictures 2019/20

Paul Halsey: Manager who also managed Ware in 2009 before moving on as goalkeeping coach at Billericay and then management positions with Hoddesdon Town and Hertford Town. Tom Bruno: Tom is a midfielder who joined us from Cheshunt early in 2019, making his debut from the bench in the 3-0 win at Egham on 26th January. He is known for his fitness and comes with the reputation of being willing to cover every blade of grass in his team's cause. In the end he made 16 appearances that season.

David Kendall: A highly experienced Central defender Dave joined us on 28th September 2019 from Cheshunt for whom he had made seven appearances since the start of the season. Daniel Rumens: Dan joins us from Enfield Town where he made 3 appearances at the start of the season including in the 5-0 win over another former club Bishop's Stortford. Previous clubs are: Dagenham & Redbridge, Histon, Bishops Stortford, Hendon, Braintree Town and Enfield Town. Liam Hope: A prolific striker Liam joins us from Enfield Town for whom he has scored over 100 goals. Liam has also had experience with a number of other non-league sides including Maldon & Tiptree and Brentwood Town. Scored twice on his Ware league debut against Staines Town. Alaa Oujdi: Alaa came off the subs bench to make his debut for the club in the 6-2 win at Erith & Belvedere on 11th March 2014. It was his only appearance that season which may surprise those who later came to see him as a permanent fixture in the first team. He had made 191 appearances for the club by the end of the 2018/9 season. Joshua Williams: An exciting talented young attacking winger, Joshua has joined us from FC Romania for whom a played a significant role in the three matches against Ware at the beginning of the season and has scored four goals for Ware already. Harry Norman: Harry has joined us from Soham Town Rangers having spent a good part of his playing career in East Anglia. He numbers Histon, Biggleswade Town and St Neots Town as past clubs. Gareth Madden: Team/Club Captain. Gareth made his first appearance for Ware from the subs bench in the 6-1 Herts Charity Cup defeat at Bishop's Stortford on 7th August 2013. He went on to make 72 appearances in the next two seasons and scored 2 league goals. He rejoins us from Waltham Forest and now captains the side. He has now made over 100 appearances for Ware.

Leigh Rose: First played for Ware on the opening day of 2011 in a 3-1 defeat at Cheshunt. After spells at other local clubs Leigh has returned to Ware and is now adding to his 33 earlier appearances. Louis Rose: Brother to Leigh, Louis made his debut on the 14th August 2012 in a 1-0 Charity Cup defeat at Potters Bar. Louis made 32 appearances in his first spell with the Blues. Williams Danquah: Midfielder Williams joins us after a spell at the now defunct Thamesmead Town. His time in Kent is somewhat misleading however as most of his career other than with Dulwich Hamlet has been spent north of the Thames. He started out at neighbours Hertford Town and has also played for Wingate & Finchley, Bishop's Stortford and Haringey Borough. He made his debut for Ware from the subs bench in the 2-1 win at Waltham Abbey on 29th December 2018. Calum Kitscha: Goalkeeper. Calum started with Bishop's Stortford before joining Histon, in the National League South, making over 60 appearances for the Cambridgeshire side. He then joined Hayes & Yeading also in the National South at the start of the 2014/15 term. In October 2014 Calum made his one appearance for the England C national side when he played in a 2-0 defeat by Turkey in Istanbul. In July 2015 he joined National League side Cheltenham Town and made his debut for them in a FA Trophy tie against Chelmsford City. After helping the Robins gain promotion into the EFL Calum signed a new one-year deal in June 2016 and made his Football League debut during an EFL Trophy tie against Blackpool. He later rejoined Stortford after a brief spell with Hoddesdon but moved to Ware towards the end of 2018/9 making 16 appearances for the Blues. Patrick Adamsom: Defender. Patrick has joined Ware this season after making 37 appearances for Cheshunt in their ultimately successful promotion push in 2018/9. Kardan Campbell: Midfield: A victim of injury in his début season of 2018/9 Kardan made only 14 competitive appearances though he scored one goal in a pre-season friendly. Kardan enjoyed five seasons at Hertford Town,

including time under current Ware manager Paul Halsey's leadership before following Halsey to Hoddesdon for two seasons. Harry Watkins: Hard working midfielder, Harry came through several London youth academies including Chelsea and Arsenal, before joining Braintree Town in early 2015; ending the season on loan to Ilford in the Essex Senior League. Other clubs include Grays Athletic, Harlow Town and Tilbury. Macsen Fraser: Macsen has just recently joined Ware from Royston a right sided player who can comfortably play on the right hand side of defence, midfield or striker. Andre McCollin: Andre is an experienced striker who recently joined Ware FC from Three Bridges FC Benjamin Crilley: Midfield: Having played junior football in Ware and shown promise Ben spent time with Stevenage and Luton. At the age of 18 he returned to Ware for the start of the 2015/6 season. He left to join Chesham United and then Walthamstow but signed for us at the beginning of February 2020.

Harvie out for the season

Centre back Harvie Gardiner, who has made a huge impact since his arrival at the club, is sadly out for the rest of the season with a serious injury. He has torn his posterior/anterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament, ruling him out until the next campaign. Harvie, though, has shown his commitment to the club by continuing to back the boys from the stand since the injury. Look out for him today and wish him well.

All change at the Swans

Staines Town have slipped to the bottom of the table and now lie some 9 points behind us and 3 clear of safety. However, this predicament has forced the club into major changes and they have replaced manager Martin Kuhl, an ex-pro with Birmingham and Derby, with Paul Barnes and a plethora of new players. Hence an almost entirely new team will be playing out the remainder of this season so it is too early to assume they are cut adrift at the bottom, as recent form might suggest.

consistency in that league. During their tenure in this now discontinued

league between 1963-73 Hertford finished between 3rd and 7th out of 16

Hertford Pen Pics Nick Hayes – Nick is on loan from Premier League side Norwich City. A very talented

young keeper, Nick is an England youth international.

Ben Herd – Player/Manager Ben is an experienced right-back who started his career

at Watford before amassing 400 football league appearances for Shrewsbury and

Aldershot.

Andrei Rus – talented young right back, Andre made his Isthmian League debut at 16

for Potters Bar Town.

Toby Byron- classy, attack-minded left back previously with Luton Town.

Nathan Fuma- versatile and technically-gifted young full back, equally at home on

either flank.

Max Jessop – Teenage central defender starting only his second season in senior

football, played last season at Hatfield. Played his youth football at Potters Bar Town.

Sam Whiting – A tenacious left back with good experience, Sam had previously

played with Ware and Aylesbury.

football debut last year at Broxbourne Borough.

Dane Batt – formerly of Colney Heath, Dane is another teenager looking to make his

mark in senior football. A gifted attacking midfielder.

Marco Merlo – Hertfordshire native who played last season as a professional in the

Czech League for FC Vysocina. Still in his teens, Marco is an all-action midfielder.

Niall Jones – another young player with senior experience, Niall made his senior

debut last season aged 17 at Cranfield. Niall is a strong runner with huge potential.

Luke Gymer – another Hertfordshire teen who played his youth football at

Biggleswade Town, Luke is a intelligent attacking midfielder with great invention.

Connor McBrien – another young player from Herts, Connor played with Luke

Gymer at Biggleswade. Another crafty number 10, who can also play across the front

three.

Ben Weyman- exciting young wing prospect promoted from the Under-23 team

David Ogbonna- skilful, direct winger signed from Hendon

Alfie Cue- roaming goalscoring winger formerly at Dartford and Hitchin.

Sam Belshaw – local lad and Hertford Town fan, Sam is a graceful forward who made

his senior debut at 17 for Hatfield last season.

Sam Oyeniran- strong, pacy centre-forward previously with Northwood and Welwyn.

Young Herts Run Free Shorn of two experienced defenders- player-boss Ben Herd and Harvie Gardiner (a relative veteran at just turned 20) it was an even more youthful than usual Hertford Town that notched up an impressive 2-0 home victory over promotion-chasing Chipstead last Saturday. New signing James Jewers, who had a fine game pulling the strings in midfield, nearly put The Blues ahead with a free kick on 4 minutes and from the resultant corner returning striker Alfie Cue headed just wide. Chipstead responded with a spell of pressure, forcing some good saves from Nick Hayes, but Hertford quickly had them on the ropes again as they poured forward at pace. Cue again went close after capitalizing on a defensive error from the visitors but scooped his shot over the bar after the ball bobbled unkindly on the recently-drained turf. Shortly after this a prolonged spell of home pressure culminated in impressive new centre-back Chris Gosling firing home from a corner for a deserved lead. Chipstead fought back and nearly levelled when Nicholas headed a free-kick against the bar but Hertford undoubtedly were in the ascendancy and nearly doubled their lead just before the break when skipper Isaac Pedro fired just wide. The second half was less action-packed than the first but Hertford continued to call most of the shots. Just after the hour Kit Brown went close after being set up by Luke Gymer but was blocked by the Chipstead 'keeper. Soon after this, though, Cue sealed a fine return to the fray by firing in the second from the left of the box. After this the game was never really in doubt and, indeed, the score could have been far more emphatic. Pedro struck the bar with an indirect free kick inside the penalty area and substitute David Ogbonna nearly netted twice in an impressive late cameo appearance. The win lifted Hertford three points nearer to safety and, in a season when they have operated on a shoestring with a very young side, staying up would constitute a highly successful season.

Car Leave the M25 at Junction 11 and follow the A320 to Woking. Pass through Woking town centre towards Guildford. At A 247 (T Junction) turn left down Claremnont Avenue. From A 247 see Woking FC on right and turn left.

Public Transport Train from Waterloo or Vauxhall to Woking and then a 15 minute walk. Go straight ahead across the car parking areas and follow signposted route along White Rose Lane, until you come to the pedestrian crossing. Go across Oriental Road and then, further on, cross over Heathside Road. Carry on down White Rose Lane until, about 75 yards past the turning for Ockenden Road, you reach the entrance to Woking Park on your right. Go in, turn left around the cricket pitch, and you will quickly notice a path leading to a small pond as part of a stream. Follow this path and it will lead you behind the Leisure Centre and high-level 3G pitches (with car park below). The ground is just beyond the car park.
