    Introduction by+r. Willia' %tandish Reed

4ne cannot read the ospels and the Acts of the Apostleswithout beco'ing aware of the fact that 7esus taught) and thedisciples and apostles acted) in accordance with hrist6steachings that there are satanic entities in this world which arecapable of causing serious proble's in 'an. 7esus stated that in

His na'e we should cast out devils. &his has been interpreted by'odern psychologists and psychiatrists to 'ean that we shouldhave do'inion over the real's of 'ental illness. &his has beenaccepted in a prag'atic sense and we have assu'ed that all'ental illness is a direct result of develop'ental orenviron'ental processes. onse-uently psychiatrists haveencouraged 'an to delve back into his past and find out when

ti'es of conflict and anxiety and fear arose in his life so that hecan deal with the 'ental proble's that he has by ascertainingthe reason for their develop'ent. &here are) of course) 'entaldiseases which arise as a result of toxic and hereditary factors.

As a physician goes along in his 'edical practice he beginsto be aware that there 'ay be an area of his practice which isco'prised of patients who do not apparently fit into thecategories set forth by the psychiatrists. In this regard it is 'ost

difficult for us to explain duality of the personality. How can it be) for exa'ple) that a young 'an who has been active in hischurch and religious activities suddenly turns about and co''itsa 'urderB &his 'ay be explained on the basis of conflictsarising in his early childhood) but as we read the scriptures wefind that there is such a thing as sin) and sin entering into thelives of 'en. &his co'es about by the individual turning his back upon od and going toward the real's of darkness) andwhen this occurs certainly evil forces can take possession of hissoul. If we are to presu'e that 'an has a soul) it is orientedeither in the direction of od or the direction of %atan. &hereappears to be no area of neutrality even though the large

percentage of 'odern 'en would prefer to re'ain on co'pletelyneutral ground. If one is going toward od and is co'pletely

co''itted to 7esus hrist) he is doubtless in an area of protection against evil. However) if he decides to sin and gotoward the real's of evil he then loses protection and 'ay besub9ect to his soul being captivated by the forces of evil.

&he 'ost co''on way for a person to have his soulcaptivated by evil is to leave the house of worship and to enterthe real's of darkness represented by the halls of drunkenness

and debauchery so co''on on every side these days) eventhough they be dressed up in rather gla'orous attire. 4nce a person has allowed his soul to beco'e captivate by the forces ofevil) it is not going to benefit his psychological or spiritualsituation to be treated in the usual ways of reassurance)tran-uili=ation) or even shock therapy. What the person in thisinstance needs is to be dealt with by a physician or 'inister whohas read the ospels and believes that 7esus was right in saying

that evil forces 'ust be cast out in the na'e of 7esus hrist.Anyone who has ever atte'pted this has been a'a=ed to seehow people can be delivered fro' terrible spiritual and psychological oppression through the use of exorcis'.

&herefore) since I have been asked to write a shortintroduction to Maxwell Whyte6s booklet on ;Hidden %pirits

Introduction by Dr. William Standish Reed

ospel writings are true. It 'ight prove disastrous for anyone toatte'pt to investigate exorcis' on any other basis.

Investigations are under way in eneva by the Rev. 8ernardMartin in this regard and I should certainly feel that we in theWestern He'isphere should also look into this hristian'inistry.

As 'edicine and psychiatry beco'e 'ore and 'orescientific and less and less spiritual) it is indeed enlightening andspiritually invigorating to see 'e'bers of the church) such as

Maxwell Whyte) co'e to the fore again pointing us to scripturaltruths in an effort to help 'odern 'an in all of his dile''as back toward wholeness) body) 'ind) soul and spirit.

    Chapter One

    1Revelation Is Progressive

It is interesting to note how the Holy %pirit has progressivelyincreased His illu'inating power as uide and &eacher upon thechurch. In the eighteenth century He broke through superstitionand showed Martin (uther that those who are 9ustified before

od 'ust be 'ade 9ust alone by believing on the finished workof alvary. It took another two hundred years for the Holy %piritto break through afresh and teach that salvation without holiness produces little evidence of the finished work of alvary in ahu'an life. 7ohn Wesley was the instru'ent chosen for thisfresh illu'ination) and it took another two hundred years for theHoly %pirit to reveal that salvation with holiness was not enough >the power was still lacking in the church) and so at the turn ofthe twentieth century the Holy %pirit was outpoured by 7esushrist) and this began the ;Pentecostal Revival< of this century.“Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit is coe

    upon you! ?Acts 2C@.

In each of these three phases) 'any were -uite satisfied withthe revelation givenD and even today we have Refor'edhurches) !vangelical and Holiness hurches and Pentecostal

hurches) but we would be -uite wrong to assu'e that the Holy%pirit has finished His revelation to the church) or that there isno 'ore to be revealed.

In 215 it see'ed that od sent a refreshing to thePentecostal groups in an endeavour to teach the' concerning thegifts of the Holy %pirit. (ittle was being 'ade a'ongPentecostal groups at this ti'e of these gifts) supernaturally

given) and there was 'istrust and opposition to their use in 'anyasse'blies) for %atan by counterfeits and fleshly 'anifestationshad brought confusion. As always happens in a revival) so'ewent on with od and the gifts of the %pirit began to appear in'any places) with particular e'phasis on the three oral gifts of

astonish'ent) he i''ediately urged her to seek od for the giftof interpretationE

&his 'ove of od is taking place a'ong 'any of the leadersof the refor'ed churches) and !piscopalian rectors are prayingtheir congregations through to the Pentecostal experience) and intheir prayer 'eetings it is reported that all nine gifts of the %piritare in fre-uent operation and 'anifestation. &his is true also ofMethodist) 8aptist and Mennonite churchesE All this ishappening outside of the well fenced walls of the Pentecostal

groups. What is od doingB Are we to assu'e that He has finished

with His revelationsB Is there anything 'ore to be revealedB Isthe church to be restored without spot or wrinkle as is indicatedin !phesians "C30B Have we a right to assu'e that the futureholds 'ore glory than the pastB We believe it does>'uch 'ore.&he glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the for'er?Hag. 3C1@.

We believe that the five 'inistry gifts) the nine gifts in theHoly %pirit) and the nine fruits of the %pirit will all be seen in perfection before 7esus co'es to catch away His church. It will be co'pleted) both in nu'ber and in -ualityE &his church>thetrue 8ody of hrist>will reveal the hrist ?the Anointed 4ne@on earth before the Head>7esus>returns to clai' it as His ownand to take it away to heaven. We believe it would be wrong to

assu'e that the church is now ready for the i''ediate return of7esus. We 'ay be disappointed if we hold this view. &he (ordsaid He would 'ake a -uick work on the earth. We believe weare living in the day of a great -uickening in the 8ody of hrist >a -uickening in the wo'b of the church that will reveal 7esusrather than so 'any of our pet theological ideas) and this willsweep away traditions fondly held) and 'uch ;religion< willgive way to the pure work of the Holy %pirit.

We believe also that where 'en and wo'en are filled withthe %pirit as in Acts 3C5) this is od6s true way to bring togetherthe 8ody of hrist and is the fulfill'ent of hrist6s prayer thatthey all 'ight be one. What love and unity are suddenly created

    %&eons and Christians

&he parables of the dragnet) the wheat and tares) and thegood seed and bad seed show that there is 'uch evil in thechurch. Pastors who have a heart of love for their flocks willknow the shocking cases that co'e to light. Adultery) lying)

cheating) stealing) pride and pettyG'indedness are all tooco''on in all our deno'inations. Whispering and backbitingsee' al'ost to be 'ore co''on these days than the fruits oflove and gentleness.

It is too easy to say that only nonGhristians would evidencesuch carnal fruits and 'anifestations of the devilD for we find'any Holy host baptised hristians in our Pentecostal

churches doing the sa'e thingsE (eaders of churches see' 'oreinterested in politics and power and 'oney than in the 'ovingof the %pirit and in hu'ilityE In fact it see's al'ost i'possibleto i'agine that od can break through so'e church groups withtheir ba=aars) bingos and bake salesE

&he church for centuries has taught that once a person hasaccepted 7esus as %aviour) then %atan goes out and 7esus co'esin and both cannot dwell in the sa'e vessel at the sa'e ti'eDand this ;doctrine< has co'pletely blinded the 'inds of'ultitudes to the origin of the fruits and works of %atan in thechurchE

In Christian Life Magazine  ?+ece'ber 21,2@ read bythousands of hristians) there is a -uestion and answer colu'nably answered by +r. . Ray'ond !d'an) the Principal ofWheaton ollege) Illinois. 4ne of the -uestions asked in this

colu'n was) ;an hristians be de'on possessedB< His replywas a classic. ;&heory says) :o) but facts say) es. It istheoretical that a de'on cannot possess a body in which theHoly %pirit dwells. However) I have known true Christians who

beco'es a 'e'ber of the fa'ily of od) od dwells in hi'.As a 'an surrenders to the Holy %pirit) allowing Hi' to take

control of the various areas of his life) he is able to live anor'al) balanced and successful 'ental) physical and spirituallifeD but when he is unwilling to turn over certain areas of hislife to the (ord) then %atan attacks. 8ecause %atan is strongerthan the 'an in the flesh) he sub'its to the te'ptations of%atan and sins. If this 'an is spiritually alert) he knows he hasi''ediate recourse to od on the basis of I 7ohn 2C1) “If weconfess our sins' He is faithful and (ust to forgive us oursins' and to cleanse us fro all unrighteousness!)

If a 'an does not confess his sin) %atan or one of hisfellow de'on spirits is in control of the phase of thehristian6s life. He 'ay enlarge his hold by inviting otherstronger and bolder de'on spirits to 9oin hi'. %oon thehristian beco'es so confused and defeated that he 'ust seek'ental or physical help. ?%ee Matt. 23C5*G5"@.

&he psychiatrist concluded by saying that he wasconvinced that except in the cases of physical in9ury or

deterioration of brain cells) that all cases of 'ental sicknesscan be traced to de'on power.

%uch state'ents in a reputable hristian Maga=ine wouldhave been i'possible a few short years) or even 'onths ago.od has a ti'e for a deeper revelation of old truths. +id not7esus say) “In y nae shall ye cast out devils!* How 'anychurch groups have even tried to do itB How 'any hristians

would even recogni=e the presence of a de'on in a hristian bythe operation of the gift of discerning of spiritsB $p till recentlyvery few) but od is 'oving by His %pirit so that those in thechurch who desire deliverance 'ay receive it) for od ise-uipping 'en an wo'en today with the power) authority andability to cast out de'ons in 7esusJ :a'e>and they are doing itE

In our own experiences which date back to the beginning of215) we have only prayed for and delivered hristians. In fact)experience shows that it is necessary for a sufferer to turn to7esus before he can be delivered. It is not often reali=ed that thede'oniac of adara fell at the feet of 7esus and worshipped Hi' before the legion were cast out into the swine. 7esus did not go

around indiscri'inately casting out devils. When He went to the pool of 8ethesda) He only healed one 'an whose faith was

turning fro' 'eans ?the pool@ to od. 7esus 'et hi' at the exact'o'ent of faith. He always willE

4ne of the reasons for this book is to teach that hristianscan be oppressed) depressed) possessed and obsessed by de'onspirits) and e-ually that they can be set free by concentratedco''anding prayer in 7esus6 :a'e) if they first confess theirneed and exercise their own faith. 7esus on one occasion said to

a 'otley co'pany of seventy disciples) “+ehold I give untoyou PO,-R to tread on serpents and scorpions' and over allthe power of the eney !  ?(uke 2#C21@. &his authority hasnever been cancelled. Are we any different today fro' thoseseventy disciplesB

It has not been reali=ed until recently that %atan) being anindependent created being of great power) has to e'ploy hisde'on spirits to do his work of destruction. od 'oves upon all

flesh by His Holy %pirit Who is o'nipotent and o'nipresent) but %atan is not o'nipresent) neither is he o'nipotentE He hasli'ited power and authority) but this power and authority isabsolutely sub9ect to 7esus the %on of od. :either %atan nor hisde'on spirits can do anything unless our Heavenly /ather per'its the' to do so. ?Read the story of 7ob@.

When %atan sees a hristian letting down his standard and

exposing areas of his life to %atan) he at once 9u'ps in with ade'on spirit into that exposed area and begins to take possession of it) for it is not under the bloodD and then when thefirst evil spirit ?possibly criticis') 9ealousy or lust@ hasestablished a good reliable beachGhead) he holds it in order to'ake the way for other different types) who will also enter andstart to establish their characteristics in the hristian6s life) untilthe end of that hristian 'ay be worse than before he was

converted. Why do so'e hristians co''it suicideB

As growth in grace is always forward for a true child ofod) so a backsliding hristian grows backward into disgrace. We believe that as a hristian grows) the Holy %pirit takes

increasingly greater control of his life. We often hear thetheoretical state'ent 'ade that soGandGso is “filled with the

Spirit!) &here 'ight have been an experience of the Holy %piritin that person6s life) but to say that he therefore was co'pletelyfilled would see' to be contradicted by the obvious evidencesall around us. We would suggest that when the Holy %pirit ca'eupon that person certain areas of his life were taken over by theHoly %pirit>in fact as 'any as were surrendered>but what ofthose areas that never were surrenderedB !xperience shows thatthere are 'any hristians in our churches today who 'ade a

%o'e of the evil spirits enu'erated in the 8ible are calleddeaf) du'b) and blind. If the ;doctrine< was true thatwhen the %pirit of hrist ca'e in at conversion %atan went out)

we are then forced to the repulsive idea that od wills the person to re'ain deaf) du'b or blindE &he Word of od doesnot agree with this apologetic theologyE It is written that “/od

that the evil spirits that oppress parts of the body are called bythe generic na'e of ;spirits of infir'itya spirit of infir'ity) and casts it out of the area of the

If the sufferer had waited patiently in faith for the(ord to co'plete the work of restoration) the benign growthwould have dissolved away. Chapter Four

    8Partial Possession

In the last chapter we endeavoured to de'onstrate and provethat hristians can suffer chronic sicknesses due to beingindwelt by evil spirits of infir'ity lodging in areas of the physical body. It is obvious that nonGhristians are si'ilarly

affected) but it would be unrealistic to try to continue to take thefoolish theological position that sickness is sent of od tohristians when 7esus healed people oppressed of the devil. Wedo not by any 'eans suggest that all sickness is caused by anindwelling de'on in the body. %o'e troubles are caused byaccidents and actual destruction of physical parts of the body.!ven in these cases evil spirits will often hinder healing) or takeadvantage of a physical weakness of the body.

However) the body is not the only part of 'an to be attacked by %atan. Man is triune>spirit) soul and body. He also has awill which is related to his 'ind. %atan will send his de'ons toattack the 'ind of the believerD he will i'plant thoughts such as'urder) suicide) theft) adultery) filthiness) etc.... It is aninteresting thought for us to consider. /ro' whence do thoughtsoriginateB &here are possibly three answers to this co'plex

-uestion. &he first is) fro' the Holy %pirit of od Who gives usthoughts of purity and nobleness. onversely) %atan and hiscohorts give us thoughts of i'purity) wickedness) licentiousnessand lust. In the 'iddle is our subconscious 'ind) about whichwe do not understand very 'uch) but it see's to be a kind ofreservoir or tape recorder of thoughts and i'pressions offorgotten things that happened) even in i'pressionablechildhood. /ro' these three sources we suggest all our thoughts

and drea's 'ateriali=e. ;/irst the thought and then the deed< isa true saying) and 7esus told us that the evil thoughts that proceed fro' the hu'an 'ind defile the 'an) and od wouldnever give us a thought to defile us. It 'ust be %atan who gives
