Growth Mindsets

A Growth Mindset is a belief that:

Intelligence can be developed

Challenges are to be embraced

There is no failure, only feedback

The success of others should inspire

you

Perseverance is a key to success

Effort leads to mastery

When is an obstacle really a challenge?

Most of life’s problems can be

viewed in one of two ways:

An obstacle – something stopping you

doing or being what you want

A challenge – something to be

overcome so that you can have or be

what you want

The choice is yours – you can

decide if it will stop you orchallenge you

What is a comfort zone?

What is your child’s comfort zone? Does it change depending on the

situation or activity?

Do people with a Growth Mindset

stay in their comfort zone, or do they

leave their comfort zone?

To embrace challenges, students (and adults!) need to leave their

comfort zone.

Intelligence

can be

developed

Embrace

challenges

See effort as

the path to

mastery

Learn from

criticism

Find lessons and

inspiration in the success of

others

Persist in the

face of

setbacks

Embrace

challenges

Challenges and comfort zones

Challenges and comfort zones

To grow and develop, we all need to

take up challenges, and challenges

involve doing things you either can’t

do yet or do not want to do.

Be brave!

Uni and comfort zones

It may seem scary now, but

remember, if your child goes

outside their comfort zone,

eventually their comfort zone

will get bigger.

Challenges and comfort zones

As with having a general Growth Mindset, don’t forget about the power

of YET.

I can’t do it… YET!

What can you as a parent do to foster

a Growth Mindset?

Praise the process. Pay attention and verbally praise children for skills that

don’t sound predetermined

Be a Growth Mindset Model

Encourage your child to forget taking the easy route (where little learning

is done) and instead embrace challenges

Remember Growth Mindset isn't just academic; it applies to many areas of

life (athletic, musical, social).

Discourage envy of peers, and talk to your child about what he or she can

learn from others who appear more successful

Post-16

As you will all be aware, Haywood caters

for students from Year 7 up to Year 13.

Haywood Sixth Form Academy has seen a

greater number of HAs applying to stay

on each year.

This September, we are going to welcome 70% of our current Y11 HA cohort back as

Y12s.

This is because the students recognise the

support and help that they get from staff

at Haywood, which continues at A level.

Students also receive assistance with university applications and writing

personal statements

One of the biggest challenges that students will face is what to do post-18

It is the time when they take their own path – they will be adults, and the future isopen to them.

How can you help them to make the decisions that will affect the rest of their

lives?

What can I do?

Remember, choices about university should be made by the students

themselves.

You can’t make the choice for them!

However, you can help your child by:

Taking them to open days or events

Discussing their options with them

Being a sounding board for their worries and concerns

Carrying out your own research on unis, courses, accommodation and Student

Finance
