Issue 5 August 2020 Aberfoyle Park High School Page 1 WELCOME Welcome to term 3 of the academic school year. As semester 2 continues, we are focussed on student achievement. All of us can learn and we learn at different rates. However, some of the traits of students who are committed to achieving their best include: being organised and making sure they know what they have to do, by when and planning ahead avoid multi-tasking. In other words, concentrate on one thing at a time so that they do not flit from one thing to another divide school work and tasks into manageable chunks and celebrate when these are completed ensuring there is a schedule which includes school work, time with friends and relaxing including sufficient sleep having a study space away from distractions and which has all of the equipment to complete tasks asking questions and seeking help from others including peers and teachers taking personal responsibility to ensure that due dates are known, the support provided beyond subjects such as tutoring and the after school senior learning hub are accessed, commit to getting work done in lessons act on feedback provided to improve the quality of tasks attempted and submitted. STAFF FAREWELL & WELCOME At the end of term 2 we said farewell to Kim Kirchner and Hannah Lamb. Term 3 has started with the return of John Ehlers teaching English and HASS. know by either telephoning 8270 4455 or emailing [email protected].

The latest update is that:

due to border restrictions there is no travel or camps to Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT

visits to aged care facilities can occur following negotiation with the management of the facility.

School excursions and camps within our state have recommenced as well as the school’s involvement in sport. This means we have reopened the gym at lunch times with different days designated for particular year levels. We can use our change rooms however showering facilities are not to be used.

CONTACT DURING SCHOOL HOURS As the second half of the school year commences it is important that students are focused on their learning. I would like to remind parents and caregivers that the school should not be used for personal contact with your child and our students. We are asking this in the interests of your child, other students and our teacher’s ability to maintain all students focus on their learning.

If parents and caregivers need to make contact with their child, either by phone or coming to the school, this needs to be through Student Services. This can be done by phoning 8270 4455 or emailing [email protected].

Valid reasons for making contact with students include:

passing on information in an emergency

collecting a child for an appointment

attending special events

educational meetings.

CAPITAL WORKS UPDATE The school holidays saw the commencement of the Capital Works Program. Fencing and contractors offices were on the school site on 8 July. Work has commenced on the internal demolition of the first stage of the works. Signage has been posted to ensure that our students and staff keep to the designated paths between various parts of the school in the interest of everyone’s health and safety. The planned completion of all three stages of the redevelopment is October 2021. In addition to the Capital Works Program we are being funded to redevelop another building on our school site. The building that is often referred to as the ‘kindy’, will be converted into three teaching spaces. It will also include teacher preparation offices. This work is due to be completed by the end of this year ready for use from the beginning of the 2021 school year.

GONSKI INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATION – PARENT & CAREGIVER RESOURCES The Gonski Institute for Education are committed to helping every child reach their full potential, educationally and in life. They also recognise that parents and caregivers play a crucial role in a child's learning and development journey.

The Institute has developed a set of parent guides to support parents through a range of issues related to their child’s education. These resources, developed by Dr Amy Graham (Gonski Institute for Education Research Fellow), are designed to provide quality, up-to-date information for parents and carers. The guides combine translated research with practical tips for parents and carers to use with their own child. One topic is social and emotional skills which can be found by clicking here. Other topics range from digital device use, play and transitioning to high school, among others.

Further parent and caregiver resources can be found at www.gie.unsw.edu.au/research/parent- and-caregiver-resources

SENIOR SCHOOL Fran Charlton, Assistant Principal Senior School Innovation & 8-12 Career Ed

Welcome to term 3. Students and parents/caregivers are reminded that Course Confirmation will be occurring in week 5 of this term for all students who will be attending Aberfoyle Park High School in 2021. During week 2 Wellbeing for Learning, all students had the process explained to them by their Care Group teacher and these presentations are available on our website for parents/caregivers. A letter explaining the process was sent home with the term 2 Student Achievement Summaries at the end of last term.

This term is a very busy term for all senior students especially the stage 2 students who are entering their final full term of high school. At the end of last term, the Senior School Team cooked the year 12’s breakfast to congratulate them on making it through a very busy and unprecedented term.

On Thursday 6 August 2020 Aberfoyle Park High School will be hosting our own Career Expo. This will be held on school grounds in the large gym. Students will have the opportunity to meet and chat with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), University ambassadors and representatives from business organisations to ask questions and find out about career pathways and courses.

Due to COVID-19 this year we are unable to offer a parent and community evening session. Aberfoyle Park High School Year 10 – 12, 3rd and 4th Year IGNITE students will participate in the Expo at selected times during the day from 12.00pm – 3.00pm. Students will gain information about courses, future pathways and opportunities in South Australia.

All students are welcome at lunch time to come along and ask questions and collect brochures to learn about future pathways.

Adelaide University, Flinders University and Uni SA will be attending to share their knowledge about courses and professions, as will tafeSA. Other organisations attending consist of Motor Trade, Engineering, Hospitality, STEM and Psychology.

More than 35 booths with different career options will be at the Aberfoyle Park High School Career Expo.

The Career Expo is designed to coincide with students undertaking Course Counselling and subject selection for 2021 during our Wellbeing for Learning Program and will be beneficial for students wishing to find out more information on post school options.

WINDOWS TO CONSTRUCTION Matt Peters, Teacher

Windows to Construction is a subject where year 10 students get to experience a range of construction techniques commonly used in the building industry.

These include:

• internal stud wall construction

• gyprock cutting, application, flushing & damage repair

• tile pattern design, cutting, application & grouting.

This subject provides students with an opportunity to experience a working environment where they can learn to safely and effectively use a range of tools and equipment, working collaboratively to achieve a common goal of a quality finished product.

It is also a suitable subject to choose in year 10 if you are considering to continue with Windows to Construction in year 11 where students can receive some industry training and accreditation for future employment in the building industry such as a White Card.

HOST A JAPANESE STUDENT IN 2021 Sarah Johnson, Senior School Reception and International Secretary

Do you have a spare room? Would you like to share South Australian life with a Japanese student? We are continually recruiting new host families to participate in the International Study Tour program by hosting Japanese high school students. Study Tours are usually for 2 weeks during July and August each year. During this time they will experience Australian school and family life and participate in excursions and school activities. As some students would have not visited Australia before it gives them a chance to learn a different culture, practice their English skills and live the Australian life for the duration of their visit.

Due to the current COVID travel restrictions we are hoping that the next Study Tour will go ahead in July/August 2021.

For the duration of their visit the students stay with accredited host families which are organised through the school. The students are usually between 15 and 17 years of age.

Here is a testimonial from a Homestay family:

‘We have been hosting international students for the past 3 years and it has been an amazing experience for everyone in the family. We found that hosting has brought us together as a family and we feel our family has grown substantially with members all over the world. For anyone thinking of hosting we say “give it a go”, you will not regret it. It is such a wonderful experience and it will enrich your lives’. The Siemensma family.

Host families receive a reimbursement of approximately $250 a week to cover out of pocket expenses such as groceries, entrance fees to tourist attractions and other expenses incurred whilst hosting a student.

If you would like more information on how to become an accredited host family for future Study Tours, please contact Sarah Johnson, International Secretary on 8270 4455 (select option 3) or email [email protected] for an information pack.

STAGE 1 MATERIALS Simon Wood, Teacher

In Stage 1 Materials students are required to investigate, design, produce and evaluate a concept table top. The photo below shows Josh with his table that demonstrates his ability to make his design a reality.

INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADOR PROGRAM AT APHS Sarah Johnson, Senior School Reception and International Secretary

The International Program at Aberfoyle Park High School would not be the same without the support of our International Ambassadors. We are very grateful for our current ambassadors and our two year 12 International Ambassador leaders.

Students from all year levels volunteer their time to be part of the International Program. This involves ‘buddying up’ with new international students when they arrive, helping them find their way around school and generally make the international students feel welcome. We are looking for new International Ambassador particularly in the middle school year levels.

If you would like to apply to be an International Ambassador please contact [email protected] the International Student Program Manager.

INTERNATIONAL FAREWELL Last term we said farewell to three of our International students. Two have been on a Study Abroad Program for a full year from Germany and the third student from France had been here since March.

We wish all three students a safe journey home and all the best with their future studies and pathways.

Southern Deadly Yarns Neporendi Aboriginal Forum Inc. and Onkaparinga Libraries presents Southern Deadly Yarns – a series of virtual author events highlighting the incredible work of First Nations authors. Join us as we examine topics including truth telling, recognition, and what makes a good yarn!

Our first Southern Deadly Yarn is with Bruce Pascoe, award winning Bunurong, Tasmanian, and Yuin author. His book Dark Emu deconstructs colonial myths that have been used to justify the dispossession of Aboriginal Country, culture and kin.
