FROM THE HEADMASTER

FINANCEFEE STATEMENTS

Parents, please note that the second of the three main Fee Statement will be posted and or emailed to you by mid-May. Please ensure your details are up to date with the College Office.

Note that all prior Terms fees are now overdue for payment unless you hold an authorised payment plan with the College.

Mr Mark BrooksBusiness Manager

Dear Members of the Marist College North Shore Family,

We were very pleased to host a Parish Connection Day when all of the Catholic Parishes in which our students live were given the opportunity to speak to the students during a pastoral period. It was pleasing to see how many parish teams took this opportunity and the discussion with those teams at the end of their presentation was most helpful for our Faith Formation team.

On Saturday 4th May, the majority of interviews for our applicants for Year 7, 2015 were held. Parents of current students who have a younger son in Year 5 need to realise that if they want their son to be enrolled at Marist College North Shore then the lodgement of his application is required immediately. Families can only receive priority if they complete this application. Year 7, 2015 placements will be announced in July.

Happy Mothers Day to all mums. Our annual Mothers Day assembly was a great success, being attended by over 200 mothers. One congratulatory email reads:

“Dear Brother Peter,

I wanted to thank you again for the lovely ceremony that the school conducted for mothers day. I have been telling friends and colleagues about the effort involved in putting together such an activity and how appreciated it was by the mum’s I spoke with. It was particularly enjoyable to witness the obvious pride that the students felt both when participating in the assembly and when serving the food they had made.

Celebrations at the school, such as Wednesday’s, really affirm the inclusive celebratory spirit of Marist and the focus on gratitude, giving back and care for all. I feel incredibly privileged to have my son in an educational institution where diversity is valued and respected and where teachers do their best to find strengths in all the students - particularly in those where it can sometimes be harder to do so...”

As you can imagine I really enjoy receiving emails such at this one!

As you know this yearswe’re celebrating the 125th Anniversary of Marist College North Shore. Last week we held Rugby League and Soccer

matches against Marist Pagewood. The games were well contested and for the Rugby League the atmosphere at North Sydney Oval number 1 was as they say, “awesome”. Congratulations to all players and coaches and a big thank you to Marist College Pagewood for accommodating our request to hold these matches at a time when extra spectators could support. A full account of the games is in the Sports section.

Also to celebrate our 125th anniversary, during our annual Champagnat week activities we are holding a special Mass for students and parents, past and present, and friends of Marist College North Shore at St Marys Cathedral in the City. Please ensure you mark this date in your diary: Monday 3rd June, 9.00am -11.00am. Our Parish Priest, Fr Edward Dooley, will be the main celebrant. I hope to see you there.

The Parents and Friends Committee is still seeking suitable donations for the Trivia Night, which on Saturday 1 June. Refer to the advertisement later in this High Notes edition. As this is the main fundraising event for the P&F, I ask that you consider donating items or your help to make this evening a success. We are particularly looking for some key “big items”. I would very much appreciate your thought about this.

Wishing you all the very best for the coming fortnight.

Br Peter Corr, fmsHeadmaster

FROM THE DEPUTY HEADMASTERMARIST PILGRIMAGE

Over the last couple of weeks of Term 1, I had the privilege to attend the Marist Pilgrimage to places that included the Holy Land, Rome and the Champagnat country in France. Pilgrims on the journey consisted of seven Marist Brothers from across the globe and twenty-eight Lay Marists from schools and Marist communities from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.

There were many times where I felt privileged to be a part of such a wonderful journey. These experiences and opportunities touched my very core. It was a journey that was real, but surreal. Both the Gospel stories and the story of Champagnat will never be the same with these pictures and emotions of the places I visited forever etched in my mind. Certainly it has been an experience that nourished my mind, my faith and has provided deep and lasting reflection.

Since returning a common question asked of me has been: What was the highlight? It has been a difficult question to answer considering thenumber of significant and inspiring places, people and experiences that we were immersed within. An example of the some of the experiences include:

• Celebrating Mass in the tomb of Jesus at the Holy Sepulchre• Walking the stations of the cross at dawn in the Old City of Jerusalem• Following in the footsteps of Jesus around the Sea of Galilee• Floating in the Dead Sea• A holy hour in the Church of the Garden of Gethsemane• A Papal audience in St Peter’s Square• Spending six days at L’Hermitage in France and visiting and drawing upon the stories of Marcellin Champagnat and the first Marist Brothers.

A recurring and a common theme that resonated with me was the challenge both Jesus and Champagnat put before their followers. This was to place themselves in their presence and to “Follow Me”. In following someone there must be an element of trust, a sense of hope and purpose for the good of not just yourself, but essentially in developing these values in others.

Both Jesus and Champagnat were different people with different personalities, but shared these same values. It was their unwavering

belief in their mission and embodiment of their character that drew people into acting upon this mission. It is our call now to live and act upon this mission with the desire and passion of Jesus and Champagnat and their early followers. A constant message I send to our boys and in fact to my own children is the importance of embracing new and exciting opportunities and experiences. The pilgrimage was a wonderful example of this message in my own life. Initial fears and concerns were cast aside each day with a fresh and renewing experience. The pilgrimage has stirred my spirit and enriched and challenged my relationship with God. It has been another experience different to the norm that helps shape the person I am.

It is this message that we continue to strive for at Marist. In partnership with parents, we must not lose sight of the importance of stirring the spirit of our young through experiences that are fresh and meaningful. One such current example is the invitation to all students and parents to be a part of our Sacramental Program. The Sacramental Program is being run by Mr Michael Dela Cruz and is an opportunity for students and their parents to ask questions and to build their faith and connection to God.

YEAR 12: RAISING THE BAR

At the end of last term, a letter was emailed to all Year 12 parents in regards to an initiative that has been titled “Raising The Bar”. Essentially it has the purpose of monitoring the progress of our HSC students and continuing to offer support through the knowledge and skills of staff.

Each Wednesday throughout the remainder of the year, the library will be open from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, where tutorials will be provided by Year 12 teachers. It is also a time where students can work together with teachers on assessment tasks or providing assistance in developing a deeper knowledge of a concept.

Currently we have had two Wednesday afternoon sessions with English and Mathematics being the focus. Furthermore students have been given the option of Thursday afternoon to use this time for study and further specific tutorials will be developed later in the term.

YEAR 12 BLUE TIES

Congratulations to the following students in Year 12 who have been acknowledge for their leadership and achievements and have received their Blue Tie:

“The first witnesses of the Resurrection are women.

This is beautiful, and this is a mission of women, of mothers and grandmothers, to give witness to their children

and grandchildren that Christ is Risen! Mothers go forward with this witness!”

These word come form Pope Francis from his Easter Sunday address. The role of Motherhood is obviously something that I cannot write about from experience, but I have witnessed many wonderful women in my life, including my mother.

The use of the word witness is I think ideal, as young men witness the actions of others and, in a majority of cases we especially witness our mothers who teach right from wrong, who show compassion when we are hurt, who give advice when needed and sometimes tell us what we need to hear even though we may not want to hear it. But most importantly our mothers have taught us to love,by witnessing the love our mothers have shown us.

Like our mothers, Christ’s mother Mary taught him many things including how to love. It was this love which he had witnessed from his mother and father that allowed him to make the ultimate sacrifice of his own life because he loved us.

I would like to thank all the mothers who attended the annual Mothers Day assembly, it was a wonderful morning and your presence made the day so special as boys once again were able to witness your love and care for them.

I hope all mother had a wonderful and enjoyable day on Sunday and your sons truly show their love for you, not just on Mothers Day but every day. I thank you and encourage you to continue to be the witnesses to your sons of Christ’s resurrection.

To all our Marist mothers, I wish to share a blessing:

Loving God,

We thank you for the love of the mothers you have given us,

whose love is so precious that it can never be measured,

whose patience seems to have no end.May we see your loving hand behind them and

guiding them.

FAITH FORMATIONPARISH CONNECTION DAY

During Week 11 of Term 1, the College held a Parish Connection and Faith Day at which a number of local parishes and guest speakers were invited to speak to the students about their local parishes and the topic of faith.

The day was very successful, in no small part due to the willingness of the students to get involved. While this is one way in which the College tries to connect students with their local parish, I would encourage parents to discuss this day with their son and to continue to encourage students to discuss their faith and to act our their faith.

LEARNING SUPPORT

LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT

Quoi de neuf?! Le Café Marist! Are you a senior who missed out on learning French? Are you in Year 7 and are already interested in French? Are you learning French now and want to practice your language skills with other students?

Le Café Marist will be starting in the next few weeks, open to one and all (students and staff). It will run during lunchtime, at the end of each month. French music, comic books, novels, movies, magazines, activities and games will be available to students as well as opportunities to learn and practice French. Bring your favourite French food and drink to Le Café to share and swap.

So, drop in, bring your friends, say Salut! and see why French is the language of the world. Watch this space and listen to announcements at school for further details for our first Le Café Marist!

CREATIVE ARTSMUSIC TUITION

It is wonderful to hear of the many students progressing with AMEB Exams as part of their Music Tuition Program. In addition, the Marching Band were outstanding ambassadors for the College at the recent ANZAC Day March. These activities are extensions of the Music Tuition Program and I encourage students to extend their musical skills.

An area for development is the organisation of students attending their Music Tuition lesson. Each Friday, each student is sent via school Gmail next week’s timetable so they can be organised. Use of their College diary is expected as an organisational tool. Methods of reminding students on the day could be a stickie reminder on their computer desktop, a silent alarm on their phone or watch.

The first week this term saw many students forgetting lessons as they did not check their time and day for their lesson. Good organisational habits need to be re-established at the start of this term.

Ms Carolyn O’BrienCreative Arts Coordinator

JAZZ IMPROVISATION TUITION

Being able to improvise is one of the important performance skills that assist musicians of all levels. This is one of the skills that would assist performers aiming for HSC and Elective Music.

The College is now offering individual lessons teaching students how to improvise in Jazz including both performance improvisation work with accompaniments and basic jazz theory by Mr Tony Gardiner. Tuition offered is for Piano, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute.

These lessons should be used in conjunction with the regular instrumental lesson with your usual tutor who teaches all aspects in playing your instrument in all styles. Lessons can be taken weekly or fortnightly.

Please contact Mr. Herbert for more details and tuition enrolment form.

LEGAL STUDIESDOWNING CENTRE & JUSTICE AND POLICE

MUSEUM EXCURSION

Year 12 Legal Studies students travelled to the Sydney CBD on Wednesday 1 May on a field trip with the aim of increasing their understanding of the HSC course content and relating it to the real world. The excursion enabled students to reflect on the compulsory Crime topic in the HSC Legal Studies syllabus course and continue their assessment of how effectively the legal system achieves justice for the victim, offender and society.

The first stop was the Downing Centre, a major courthouse complex in Sydney, where students were able to view Local Court and District Court criminal court cases, some with juries. Students were able to increase their understanding of the judicial arm government and witness the law made by parliament being interpreted by judges.

Students experienced the reality of how courts function and discovered that they are not always as dramatic as American TV programs make them out to be. Additionally, no TV cameras are allowed in Australian courts. There are always a few students on an excursion of this nature who are surprised that they can walk into any courtroom and sit down and watch a criminal court case in progress (after bowing to the Coat of Arms located behind the judge in respect for the laws of Australia, which all students did very well).

This experience of the open court process enabled students to think about how this helps with the integrity of the judicial process, enabling courts to demonstrate that justice is beingadministered in an open and transparent manner.

After lunch, students visited the Justice and Police Museum where they were given a tour of the museum, including the corridor of cells.A police prosecutor addressed the students and explained his role in the criminal trial process. The students then participated in a mock trial in the court room, performing roles in the case of Police vs. Taylor. There was a major focus on the extent to which the law reflects moral and ethical standards at the museum, which is one of the syllabus themes and challenges for the Crime topic.

Successful HSC students use a wide range of resources (not only the course textbook) to gain a deep understanding of the course content. At the end of the day students had another resource to help them, based on experiential learning, as they prepare for future Legal Studies assessment tasks and the HSC Legal Studies examination on 17th October. In addition, some students commented that the excursion helped them gain more information about possible future careers in the area of law.

Our Year 12 Legal Studies students are to be commended for their respectful behavior as they interacted with members of the public and the legal profession and for being excellent ambassadors for the College within the wider local community. Thankyou to all the staff at the above venues for contributing to the education of our students on this day.

CHESSTHE 2013 CHESS BATTLE BEGINS!

The NSW Junior Chess League’s Metropolitan Secondary Schools Competition, a weekly team competition for secondary schools in the Sydney Metropolitan area commenced Friday 10 May. The competition provides an opportunity to compete against other State, Catholic and Private schools in the Metropolitan Northern Region. This year’s competition has attracted 295 teams from across the state representing ninety-two schools.

Marist North Shore has twenty students in five teams in the Junior Grade (Years 7 & 8), sixteen students in four teams in the Intermediate Grade (Years 9 & 10) & four students in the Senior Grade (Years 11 & 12) in this competitive event. Players will slide and stamp pieces of royalty across a chessboard through seven rounds of action & qualifying teams will go on to play other regional winners in knock-out finals to see who is crowned NSW State Champions for each grade. Matches are scheduled on a home-and-away basis and played on Fridays after school.

Trying to get groups of high school students to gather in silence is usually an impossible task but few words are needed in the presence of a king. Students at Marist North Shore are proving to love team tournaments because all the students enjoy this competition and each year it encourages more students with an analytical mind to get involved. Each team has four chessboards per match-up, with the best player competing on the top board. The point value is one point per board, so the accumulation of points is more important than personal victories.

Chess members spend three lunchtimes practising games and attend an in-school professional coaching session run by the NSW Academy of Chess every Friday. The game provides students with a nice challenge, teaches them patience, good sportsmanship and problem solving skills. It also teaches students that you don’t have to win to enjoy. With such dedicated efforts from all our team members and the support offered by the coaching and the College, we wish our players an enjoyable and rewarding competition and we hope to accomplish great success.

Welcome back to Term 2 in the library. We hope you had a pleasant break with time enough for reading. Now that we are back, let me give you a reminder to return or renew all library books.

We have some great new releases lined up for this term, and more to come throughout the year, including the latest volumes of the Deathnote series, graphic novels including the Flash, and classics like Robin Hood. You will find more intense reading available as well with many novels from the Premier’s Reading Challenge being added to the collection.

We encourage you to register for the Premier’s Reading Challenge if you have not already done so.

Remember, the library is only for study and reading, with plenty of room in the sunshine if you want to play outside. Having said that, our discussion groups are welcome while remembering to keep the conversations quiet.

Happy Reading!

DEBATINGYear 11 Year 12BRAHAM, Dominique PLASTO, TobyINGRAM, Tom MITCHELL-BYRNE, Cian PATERSON, EllisCHENG, Jonathan GOPALANI, Rishi (C) ANDREW, Calan

I would also like to acknowledge the work of our coaches: Mrs Durand - Year 7, Mr Watts - Year 7, Mr Alvaro - Year 8, Mr Moysa - Year 9 and Mr. Taylor - Year 10.

The encouraging results that we have received so far would not have been possible withoutthe efforts of these teachers. Demonstrating their commitment, Round 3 was held atPennant Hills and we had four coaches present as well as Br. Peter who kindly gave upfour hours of his Friday night to drive the College bus and support the teams.

We have also had the support from a former parent, Mr Chester Tong, who is the managerof Precision Badges. He kindly organized the production of the Marist North Shore Debating tie pins (seen in the photograph). We have a few left for purchase for $10.00 each.

MCNS is hosting Round Five of debating on May 17 at the College from 5:30pm. All students and parents are invited to attend and support our debaters.

Mr Greg QuinnDebating Coordinator

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS DEBATING ASSOCIATIONCOMPETITION

This year the College has six teams in the Catholic Schools Debating AssociationCompetition (CSDA), one for each year level. For the first time, there are six roundsof debates before the knockout elimination rounds. This allows more students theopportunity to debate. The first round was held on April 5, however the debating studentshave been attending workshops and practices since the beginning of March.

The captain of debating team for this year is Rishi Gopalani (12 Kelly). His calm demeanor and enthusiasm has been a positive influence on the entire debating squad. The teams are becoming more confident as the season progresses. Last Friday night saw the completion of

Round Three. Marist North Shore had its best result yet – winning five out of six debates (and improvement on winning four out of six debates in Round Two!). All teams have now won at least one debate which is an encouraging start. Our goal for the season is to have at least one of our six teams progress to the elimination rounds of the finals that start on May 30.

The team members are:

SPORTBASEBALL

Luis Gonzalez (7 Salta) is a member of the Ryde Hawks Little League Baseball team that won the NSW Little League championship in the April school holidays. The team now goes on to the Australian Championships in June. The team that wins the Australian title will then go on to play in the Little League World Series in USA in August.

In addition to this fantasitc news, Luis has been nominated by Baseball NSW as one of five trialists for the Australian U/13 Cal Ripken Little League team. This means that even if his Ryde Hawks do not win the Australian title in June, Luis gets a chance to gain selection for a National team to play in another Little League tournament in USA in August.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed for a home run for Luis!

SPORTMCC SPORT - ROUND 2

Round 2 saw a week of mixed results on the sporting field as we celebrated our 125th Anniversary.

On Wednesday 8th May, we saw two outstanding League matches played at North Sydney Oval. The A Grade side showed great skill and determination against a talented Pagewood side but unfortunately were narrowly defeated 16 - 6.

The B Grade showed a huge turnaround from last week’s loss to completely dominate Pagewood across all areas of the game for a thrilling and much deserved victory 28 - 12.

In Thursday’s matches, we suffered some heavy defeats in the U/14’s and U/15’s however positives can be taken from the fact that both matches went for the whole fifty minutes and our boys hung in until the end.

In the U/13’s matches we were also beaten convincingly however U/13B’s coach Mr Chandler would like to especially make mention of Tom Zwart who showed great vision and was able to score the team’s only points off a great chip from their own line before regathering and running the length of the field to score.

In the Soccer, the A and B grade were play-ing in their 125th Anniversary matches at Hef-fron Park, Maroubra with both teams definitely turning up to play. The A Grade dominated the play scoring a 2 - 1 victory with Tom Ma-nos and Jonathan Prasad starring for the team.

The B Grade had a thrilling match and continually attacked Pagewood’s goal for a 4 - 0 victory. Congratulations to both teams on some outstanding football.

The U/15’s soccer also had a very successful day winning 2-0 and the U/14’s won their match in a whitewash scoring eight goals to Pagewood’s none. The U/13A’s went down narrowly 2-1 however the U13B’s had their second victory of the season beating Pagewood 3-1.

Congratulations to all the winning teams. Next week we play Bankstown which will be an important round that we need to win if teams are a hope of making the semis this year.

CREDIT CARDS

We do not take credit card details over the phone during opening hours due to the volume of customers in the shop. However, if you’re unable to visit the shop, there is a credit card form on the school website which you can give to your son to bring along when he is to be fitted.

A reminder to all parents that it is a requirement that your son is present to be fitted when ordering uniform.
