If there is one sport that brings back all the memories and players back together after fifty-years, it would have to be football. A game that first originated back in China, yes, China around 200-300 BC and it was then-called Medieval Football. In 1961, the Donna Redskins won the State 2A Football title by defeating Quanah 28-21 in a come-back win. These guys are our Friday night heroes. Forget about their wrinkles and scruffy looks. These guys are aging with the past, but they can still inspire those who will listen to their stories on how they won it. These guys are our legends. Winning a state football championship title fifty-years ago in Donna, Texas still brings back many memories and tears for these guys. Donna quarterback Luz Pedraza can still call the plays he watches from the stadium seats as he attends Donna Redskin football games today. It’s what football does. It never makes you forget. Playing at Darryl Royal-Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas seemed to hap-pened too fast for these Legends of the Fall. The players, all 18 of them were just excited to know that they would eat on the way too. The players, Abel Benavides, Bill Brumley, Fred Edwards, Raul De La Garza, Raul Alvarado, Oscar Avila, Alfredo Avila, Fabian Barrera, Harry Lantz, Verl Hopper, Tommy Stone, Richard Avila, Jackie Roberson, Jim Hulme, Joe Gonzales, Nick Padilla, Luz Pedraza, and Johnny Badeaux all packed their bags and made the trip to Austin. Most of the players did not even know that they were about make history. Head coach Earl Scott always told these guys “we have an-other game to play.” Assistants, Verle Cray and Bennie LaPrade were loyal to Scott. For these coaches, it was just another game they loved to coach. For these 18 players, they just played hard and prayed, for the love of the game.

ThePerfectSeason!(Harlingen, Tx)-Make it four District 31-5A titles in a row! As a matter of fact, make that 31-straight district wins in a row dating back to 2008. Since that season, the Cardinals have posted an impressive 46-6 overall record, including three consecutive State 5A Regional championship appearances in Division I. The Harlingen Cardinals completed another 10-0 season by defeating PSJA Memorial 49-7 at PSJA Stadium and for head football coach Manny Gomez, it was pure Cardinal Pride. Now, the quest for a State 5A begins with six more games to go. This year’s State 5A Division I title game will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on December 17th. Did Gomez expect this moment? “No doubt. This is what we put together in the offseason. The experience against SA Stevens (31-30 2OT loss in regionals) gave us more to shoot for and so far, our coaches have worked

The Class 5A Division I playoff brackets favor the Cardinals as they will meet Los Fresnos (8-2) and then will play the winner of the Del Rio (8-2) or Donna (7-3) match up in the area playoffs next week. Should the Cardinals advance to Regionals for the fourth time, head coach Gomez feels that there is no jinx at this level after three straight losses. “We have played great football teams in those three losses. At this level, every player must perform, our coaches must perform, I must perform,” he added. In 2008, Harlingen lost to Austin Westlake (49-23) and again in 2009 (42-13). Westlake advanced to the quarter-finals in 2008 before losing to SA Clark 24-21 and then went all the way in 2009 and lost to Euless Trinity 41-38 in a heart-breaking, last second touchdown...

pass in the endzone as time expired. As seconds ticked off the clock at PSJA Stadium, it was an indescribable feeling for Man-ny, after being hoisted on his players shoulders after their season ending win over PSJA Memorial 49-7. “I was hoping that my players would not drop me. I weigh too much,” laughs Gomez. “We spend so much time together. It was a time of joy. Watching my Cardinals hoist the 31-5A trophy was special. These guys understand the concept of team. Every player understand their roles”. The Cardinals will probably meet District 27-5A champions, SA Warren (9-1) in the regional finals. The Warriors are coached by Bryan Dausin and they have posted wins over SA Southwest 63-13, SA Stevens 41-31, and O’Connor 38-21 in 2011. All three are playoff teams.

Historic? The Cardinals have scored 530 points and allowed 126 points scored on their defense. Of those points scored, only the Abilene Eagles have scored more on the Cards defense in their 45-44 loss. The seven-time state champions are in the play-offs with a 7-3 record. The Eagles losses have been to State 5A champions, Euless Trinity 34-17; regional finalist, Harlingen; 4A finalist, Longview 35-28. If this is any indication of what to expect from the Harlingen Cardinals in the State 5A Division I playoffs, Gomez feels that his scheduling only makes sense. “The only date I have is Dece-member 17th. That’s how we handle our business. Our starters prepare in practice. No team is perfect. But at this level, you have to be perfect,” adds Gomez. Note: The Harlingen Cardinals will play this Saturday at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m. in the first round of the Class 5A Division I Bi-District Championships.

Panthers Make Jump Into The State PlayoffsClass 5A Division II Bi-District Championships: Weslaco (9-1) to play PSJA Memorial (7-3); Brownsville Pace (8-2) Meets PSJA North (7-3)

(Brownsville, Texas)-It was not the finish that the Weslaco Pan-thers would have loved to ended with but their 28-21 loss to Brownsville Pace in District 32-5A might have served these Pan-thers right. “We played a great team this afternoon. But, we are a great team too. This loss will only make us better,” head coach Tony Villarreal told his players afterwards. The Panthers will now share the 32-5A trophy with San Benito (8-2, 6-1) and will host PSJA Memorial of 31-5A in Weslaco this Thursday night at Bobby Lackey Stadium. “The last time we loss our last game of the season, we went three-deep in the State 5A playoffs,” said Villarreal. But against the Vikings, it all went down to one play with the Panthers facing fourth down at the Vikings three-yard line with less than :10 seconds to play in the game, needing a touchdown

to send the game into overtime. Panther QB Carlos Madrigal rolled right and threw his last pass attempt and it was tipped in the endzone. This was the third time in the drive that the Pan-thers had converted on fourth down. This time, their luck ended. The Pace Vikings bench started to celebrate afterwards. “We’ll bounce back,” Madrigal said. In 2007, the Panthers defeated Edinburg North (62-49), McAl-len (40-38), before losing to SA Madison (59-42). Against the Pace Vikings, the Panthers fumbled away the ball four times and had one interception. “This game helps us prepare for the PSJA North Raiders this week,”says Pace head football coach, Rene Medrano. “Weslaco helped us improve and believe. And believe me, I’m just glad to get out of this one today.” The Vikings lost to PSJA Memorial (31-16) in the Division II

Bi-District Championships; then again in 2009 to PSJA North (48-34) followed by another first round losses to PSJA 24-7 in 2008 and again in 2007. Four straight losses in the Division II playoffs has frustrated Medrano and he hopes that traveling back to PSJA Stadium on Friday night will change all this. The Pace Vikings have one thing in their favor. The Raiders lost last week to PSJA 26-21 and this could give the Vikings the momentum they will need to beat another run-ning team like the Panthers. Should the Vikings beat the Raiders, they will advance to the Area playoffs against the winner of the McAllen (6-4) or Laredo Alexander (10-0) game. The Panthers will have a tougher road to follow should they beat the Wolverines this Thursday. The winner will meet either Eagles Pass (5-5) or McAllen Memorial (10-0) in the area playoffs.

McAllen Memorial Mustangs Wins 30-5A TitleClass 5A Division II Bi-District Championships: Mustangs to meet Eagle Pass

(McAllen, Texas)-The McAl-len Memorial Mustangs won the outright 30-5A title by defeating the Sharyland Rat-tlers 28-14 and then marched into the State 5A Division II playoffs with a perfect 10-0 re-cord. Something the Mustangs had not done since 1995 when Claude Bassett was head foot-ball coach. “This is a great accomplish-ment. I knew that this team was special from the start of the season. It was a great fin-ish. Now, we need to continue this success in the playoffs,” said Bill Littleton, head foot-ball coach of the Mustangs. For Littleton, it was his first perfect season with the Mus-tangs. They will now travel to Shir-ley Field this Friday and play Eagle Pass (5-5), at 7:30 p.m. , who defeated Eagle Pass Winn 28-21 in District 29-5A in their season finale. Last year, the Eagles lost to Memorial in the first round 28-20. Four-year lettermen, quar-terback Matthew Kaufmann has led the Mustangs to three playoff appearances, includ-ing a third-round appearance in 2010. The Mustangs lost

to eventual State 5A Division II Champions, Cibolo Steele. The Mustangs could take one more step in the playoffs with Steele now playing in the up-per bracket. This means that, should Memorial beat Eagle Pass, they will meet the winner of the Weslaco-PSJA Memori-al game in the area playoffs. In the third round, the Mustangs could face, more than likely, SA Reagan (10-0) from Dis-trict 26-5A.

McAllen Bulldogs To Host Undefeated Laredo Alexander

Class 5A Division II Bi-District Championships

(McAllen, Texas)-The McAl-len Bulldogs (6-4) will enter-tain Laredo Alexander (10-0) this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at McAllen Memorial Veterans Stadium. The Bulldogs ended their season with a 38-21 loss to Sharyland (9-1) in District 30-5A, something that head coach Tony Harris would have rather not preferred. Prior to that loss, the Bull-dogs had defeated Donna (38-10), La Joya (38-3), and Palm-view (31-7). Now, they will face another Bulldog team that has scored 447 points and has allowed only 133 points in ten games. Alexander QB Brian Swaine has passed for 2,837 yards with 27 touchdowns, complet-ing 205 passes of 304 thrown. He has rushed for another 859.0 yards too. In the back-

field, senior RB Xavier Skaggs has rushed for 775 yards and also caught 688.0 yards from Swaine this season. WR Dan-iel Ramos leads the team in receptions with 70 catches for 935 yards. The McAllen Bulldogs will be in for a long night on de-fense. The Bulldogs defense has given up 250 points this season to its opponents and against 30-5A District Cham-pion, McAllen Memorial, the Bulldogs allowed over 600 yards of total offense. Harris will go with quarterback Justin Salinas. The winner meets the Pace/PSJA North winner next week.

(Donna, Tx)-The Donna Redskins will begin its quest for another state title when they meet Del Rio (8-2) at Shir-ley Field on Saturday in Laredo. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. in the Class 5A Division I Bi-District Champion-ships. In Division II, PSJA Memorial (7-3) of Dis-trict 31-5A won the coin toss and will play 32-5A co-champions, Weslaco (9-1) at Bobby Lackey Stadium at 7:300 p.m. Wolverine headcoach Gus Cavazos was at the Weslaco-Pace game last Saturday and was hoping that a Thursday night game would be perfect. This means that the Panthers, follow-ing their 28-21 loss to Pace could still hinder the Weslaco team this Thursday night. “Play-ing in Weslaco is not what I wanted but we got on Thursday,” said Cavazos. Teams that

play Weslaco at home will be intimidated by all the fanfare and video board. The Wolverines fin-ished District 31-5A tied for third place with Edinburg but ended their season with a loss to district champion, Harlingen 49-7. So can the Wolverines be gauged? Memorial QB Manny Mancillas was slightly injured against Harlingen so Cavazos opted to pull him from the game. To

date, he has passed for 1,586 yards and rushed for 489 yards. On the ground, Fernando Garza will lead the team with averaging 4.0 yards per carry on 107 takes. At wide-receiver, the Pan-thers will have to stop Jaime Borrego (785.0 yards) and Jeric De La Cruz (528.0 yards). The winner will play either Eagle Pass or McAllen Memorial in the next round. At Laredo, Del Rio will meet Donna, who will

have to come up with some gutsy play-call-ing in order to stop the Rams running attack. The second-place Rams from District 29-5A have scored 410 points throughout the season and have allowed only 114 points scored. Losses to Aleaxnder (28-21) and SA Jay (31-20) have accounted for 59 of the 114 points al-lowed by the Rams this season. What’s impressive, is the five shutouts the

Rams have notched this season by outscoring their 29-5A opponents 232-0. All blowouts too. Can the Redskins knock off the Rams with its own running game? Donna RB Fraire is the fire power behind these Redskins have and last week Fraire, he rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns. With both starting quarterbacks out, Casey Ramirez, a sophomore, will lead this team on Saturday.

PSJA North Entertains PaceClass 5A Division II Bi-District Championships

(San Benito, Tx)-The San Benito Greyhounds (8-2) finished its season watch-ing the Weslaco Panthers (9-1) hand them a share of the District 32-5A title last Saturday after their loss to Brownsville Pace 28-21. The win meant alot but what was more rewarding, the Greyhounds beat Los Fresnos earlier in the season. This means no playoff match with the Harlingen Cardinals in the first round. The Greyhounds will play 31-5A Edinburg instead in the Class 5A Division I Bi-District Championships. But, don’t under-estimate the Bobcats. In 2010, the Bobcats went three rounds before losingto SA Wagner 31-10 at the Alamdome in San Antonio, Texas. On paper, the Greyhounds are the better team with 350 points scored on offense. Again, on paper, the Grey-hounds lost to Harlingen 49-7, while the Bobcats lost too, 42-14. So which team will come out and play this Friday night at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito? The Greyhounds beat 32-4A District Champion, Weslaco East 28-16 in their season opener and their only other loss was to the Weslaco Panthers 21-14. QB Jacob Puente will the Hounds against all-purpose player, Sal Martinez of Edinburg. The key? Keep the ball away from Martinez every chance these Greyhounds get or they will pay a hefty price.

(Pharr, Tx)-The PSJA North Raiders (7-3) will entertain Brownsville Pace (8-2) on Friday night at PSJA Stadium in the Class 5A Division II Bi-District Championships. The winner will play either McAllen or Laredo Alexander in the area playoffs. The Pace Vikings are riding high after knocking off Weslaco in their last game of the season by holding off the Panthers at the three-yard line, while the Raiders were surprised by PSJA 26-21. Raiders head coach Bruce Bush is aware of the Vikings defense, which has allowed only 170 points throughout this season. The Raiders on the other hand, have given up 246 points. Players to watch for the Raiders are QB Aus-tin Navarro and he will have to be careful with Pace LB Ben Hernandez, who has caused three fumbles along with teammate Chris Esquivel who pressured Weslaco QB Carlos Madrigal last weekend. He finished the game with 14 tackles. The Vikings are led by QB Dustin Hernandez who has passed for 1,360 yards and his favorite targets are Danny Munoz (626.0 yards) and CJ Arizmendi. He averages 20.0 yards per catch. “The Raiders like to control the ball. We don’t expect them to change what has worked in the past. I like our chances,” said Pace Viking head coach Rene Medrano. The Vikings would like to advance to the next round. It’s been four straight years of first round frustrations for the Vikings. “We need to get this monkey off out backs. We have the team to make this happen,” added Medrano.

fter the Weslaco East Wild-cats (9-1) defeated the Edcouch-Elsa (9-1) Yel-

lowjackets 31-14 on October 28th at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco, head football coach Armando Cuellar was left speechless. After 30 years of coaching and the Wildcats only foot-ball coach, he had to pause for a mo-ment. “This is a tribute to my players and staff. This district title means so much to me in my career. Words cannot ex-press how I really feel inside,” said Cuellar. The Wildcats capped their season with a win over Hidalgo (57-10), thus

eliminating the Pirates from the post season. It’s been a long season. The Wildcats started its season with a 31-0 thrashing of Zapata but the next week, against the San Benito Grey-hounds, the East lost its strong side, losing 28-16. “We lost that game. We were outplayed. The better team won,” said Cuellar. Whatever happened in the next weeks ahead, the Wildcats won their next eight games, leading them to the District 32-4A title. Now, the Weslaco East Wildcats will play 31-4A, Alice (4-6) this Fri-day night at Bobby Lackey Stadium in the Class 4A Division I Bi-District Championships.. Kickoff is set for

7:30 p.m. In 2010, the East Wildcats clinched a share of the 32-4A title and went three rounds deep in the State 4A Division I playoffs. They posted a bi-district title win over Corpus Christi Ray (20-14) and then knocked of Victoria West 42-35 in area championships. A trip to the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas against Cedar Park ended their chanc-es of the winning a state title. Three games away. Should the playoffs favor the Wild-cats, the winner of Friday night’s game will play either Victoria East (6-4) or SA Jefferson (5-4) in the area playoffs. The winner will probably meet Cedar

Park (8-2) in the regional finals. “We are making improvements each week. Injuries have plagued our team this season. Luckily, those injuries were early on,”said Cuellar. The East Wildcats have been impres-sive in 2011. They allowed only 95 points scored against them this year, with San Benito scoring 28 points in their win. Since then, the Wildcats have allowed less than two touch-downs scored per night. Senior running back Aaron Munguia leads the team in rushing with 1,835 yard. He averages 7.0 yards per carry. Marco Navarro, Peter Gonzalez, and Brandon Hernandez have all added

another three hundred yards to this season. If the Alice Coyotes expect to make any progress against the Wild-cats, they will have to stop DL Efrain Alvarez. He leads the team with 15 quarterback sacks and Darek Martinez has four interceptions for the year, in-cluding 25 tackles. On kickoffs, the Wildcats are deadly with Jose Luis Hernandez scoring 53 points and has accounted for 26 touch backs. The 31-4A Alice Coyotes have given up 300 points on defense. Running back, AJ Perez leads the team with rushing yards of 715.0 or seven yards per carry.

Big Pile-Up! The Roma Gladiators fought to the end but no measurement by the referees to determine actual first down mark in overtime. Mercedes won 35-28 as Roma head coach Max Habecker watches in disbelief. Mercedes head coach Mike Uribe with referee, clinches 32-4A spot. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

Mercedes Wins in OTWith No Measurement

Class 4A Bi-District Playoffs

(Mercedes, Tx)-The Roma Gladiators (5-5) could only watch in disbelief as the ref-erees walked away in over-time, giving the Mercedes Tigers a wild 35-28 win to clinch the final 32-4A fourth place spot and most of all, a trip to the postseason. Af-ter determining that the first down was short. Gladiator head coach Max Habecker begged the referees for a measurement. But, no dice. “This is not fair. That pile-up did not determine where the ball was or where it fell.

I can’t believe that it was not worth a measurement,” said Habecker. “We played like Gladiators tonight.” The Mercedes Tigers will now play Corpus Christi Calallen at Tiger Stadium this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Mercedes Tigers had to get lucky after three of four games at the start of the district season to Weslaco East, Edcouch-Elsa, and Hidalgo. Sitting at 1-6 with only three games left to play, the Tigers needed to win and Uribe also need some help.

Tigers to play host to Calallen Wildcats on Friday

The Tigers first defeated La Joya Juarez-Lincoln 17-8, followed by another win over Valley View 44-0 to set up the stage after Weslaco East knocked off Hidalgo, to end their season with three straight losses. Now, they will face last year’s State 4A Division II semifinalist, Calallen who has outscored their oppo-nents 405-55 in 2011. The Wildcats rotate two quarterbacks with Andrew McCurley and Preston Dorsey, both juniors. The Wildcats just run the ball down field. Running back Marcus Price leads the team with 1,022 yards. Against CC Ray, Price rushed twice for 91.0 yards and was taken out of

the game. The Calallen Wildcats have also sacked their oppo-nents quarterbacks 28 times this season. The winner will play Bee-ville or SA Southside in the area playoffs next week.

Class 4A Bi-District Playoffs

(Edcouch-Tx)-The Rio Grande City Rattlers (6-4) are back in the State 4A Division I Bi-Dis-trict playoffs and headcoach Carlos Longoria will now take his team to Flour Bluff (6-5) this Friday. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. The Rattlers played Edcouch-Elsa earlier this season, losing 42-21 and the Yellowjackets then came up short by losing the district title to Weslaco East 31-14. Now, they will play Kings-ville (5-5) at Benny Layton Sr. Memorial Stadium on Friday night. Both Rio Grande Valley teams will be favored to win the first rounds by HSSM. Head coach Joe Solis of the Yellowjackets has talked about this opportunity but also has his opponent on his mind. The state-ranked Port Lavaca-Cal-houn Sandcrabs (10-0), should they beat the Brahamas. Both will then meet in the area play-offs. “We would love to beat Port Lavaca-Calhoun. But first, we must beat Kingsville. This is exciting,” says Solis. The Brahamas have scored 299 points but defensively, they have allowed 236 points scored against them. By com-parison, the Jackets have al-lowed just 84 points. On of-fense, the Jackets have scored 407 points. Players to watch for the Jackets are Israel Lore-do and Alonzo Toscano at

running back and quarterback Eric Morales. Against Mission Veterans, Toscano rushed 27 times for 187 yards and two scores while Morales had a great night with 9-of-12 passes for 330 yards and four touch-downs as they won 49-0. “We are building momentum and that’s what we need in the state playoffs,” says Longoria. The Rattlers or Flour Bluff will play the winner of the Greg-ory-Portland or SA Bracken-ridge game in the area playoffs next week.

Grulla Gators Make Playoffs for First Time; Rio Hondo In

Class 3A State Playoffs

(Rio Grande City, Tx)-Imagine this: The Grulla H.S. Gators are one of 32 teams playing for a state championship title in Class 3A. Call it a season of miracles for the Grulla H.S. Gators. In only their second season, the Ga-tors (7-3) made history when they de-feated the Port Isabel Tarpons 27-26 and then knocked off Zapata 35-29 last Friday to earn the right to repre-sent District 32-3A in the State 3A Division I Bi-District Championships.

They will now play Raymondville at home on Friday night at Joe R. San-chez Stadium in Rio Grande City. The Bearkats finished tied for second place. Head coach Abel Gonzalez, who lost his father a few weeks ago, will lead his team that has scored 303 points this season. This will be a rematch of Week 1 when the Bearkats beat the Gators 28-20 on their turf. The winner will meet West Columbia or Rockport-Fulton in the Class 3A Division I Re-

gional Championships next week. As for the Rio Hondo Bobcats, they barely escaped with a victory by beat-ing the Gators 14-13 and if this is any indication on just how tough the Ga-tors are, just ask head coach Rocky James. The Bobcats (7-3) will now play Lyford (6-4) of District 31-3A in the State 3A Division II playoffs this Friday at Leo Aguilar Stadium in Los Fresnos at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are riding a two-game win streak and head coach Jaime In-fante will bring his spread-offense that has scored 386 points. Bulldogs weakness? Their defense has given up 286 points and they will meet a potent Bobcat defense that has given up only 155 points this season.

(Port Isabel, Tx)-The 32-3A Tarpons (6-4) will meet champions, Orange Grove (7-3) of District 31-3A at Cats Stadium in Ed-inburg on Friday night. The Bulldogs are back in the State 3A Division II playoffs after going 1-9 in 2010. The Tarpons run the ball. Running backs Matt Martinez (84 carries/563.0 yds), Jacob Losoya (74 carries/512 yards), and Juan Aguilera (80 carries/513 yards) will carry the load for the Tarpons. The Tarpons are coming off a 35-21 loss to Rio Hondo and earlier in the season, the Tarpons lost to Grulla HS 27-26. In 2010, the Tarpons were eliminated in the first round by Robstown 37-7 and missed the playoffs in 2009. A win for the Tarpons will be rewarding.

(Harlingen, Tx)-The defending 30-5A District Champions, Sharyland Rattlers have won three tournaments this Fall sea-son and so far, head coach Fernando Ro-driguez is just trying to put the best team together. “It’s difficult when you have

talented players. Trying to put the best team together is a task,” adds Rodriguez. At the Weslaco Invitational Golf Tourna-ment, Rattler senior Carlos Pena won his first tourney of the season with a score of 70-78 and at the McAllen Invitational, de-

fending champion, Peter Fox easily swept the field with scores of 71-72 at the Palm-view Golf Course. This could be the best Sharyland team yet, with hopes of making it back to the U.I.L. State 5A Tournament in Austin, Texas in 2012. As for the Harlingen South Hawks, it’s been one season since the Hawks golf team featured probably one of the best

golfers from the Rio Grande Valley, Ro-man Robledo. Head coach Larry Kruse knew that replacing Robledo would be a task. In 2011, the Hawks are off and run-ning as they have won one tournament as a team and also finished second over-all at the Harlingen Invitational played at

the Tony Butler golf course in Harlingen. Justin Kitten has emerged as the player to watch for the Hawks. He won the Edin-burg Invitational at the Los Lagos Golf Course with a two day scores of 72-75. The Hawks also won the overall team title with scores of 332-325-657. Senior Ricky Solis of McAllen H.S. showed that he will be a force in District 30-5A. The four-year senior golfer had trouble staying in the fairways at the Tony Butler Golf Course, but managed to win with 77-76. Edinburg senior golfer Mi-chael Fasci finished four-strokes behind Solis with a 78-79. It’s Fasci’s best finish so far in 2011. In 2011, Fasci will be challenged by PSJA’s Rudy Muniz who has had a great start this Fall. He finished fourth at the Weslaco Invitational with scores of 72-77, good for fourth place with a 149. He finished actually, tied for second place, one stroke behind Pena, who won the tournament. The Sharyland Rattlers had four players finish in the Top 10. Led by

Pena, Jose Pena took second place honors by virtue of scorecard tie-breakers, with teammate Peter Fox, both shooting 149. In 8th place overall, Jon Ybarra carded a 75-76 to give his team its best score of the season with a 295-300-595. With the Sharyland Rattlers playing this good, they could well be headed to the State 5A Championships in 2012. Last year’s Region-IV 5A winner, San Antonio Reagan (305-309-614) and SA Churchill (320-311-631) both advanced.

No matter what happens, good or bad, you still have to believe in yourself.HSSM: Who started you play-ing basketball?Parker: My Dad was a profes-sional basketball player and I have been around basketball courts all my life since I was five years old.HSSM: How do you feel about playing basketball? What does this sport mean to you?

Parker: I love this game. This is what I dream. I have a pas-sion for this game.HSSM: At the age of 19, the San Antonio Spurs drafted you. Your thoughts.Parker: I was excited and overwhelmed. This was the highlight in my life.HSSM: Three NBA titles and one MVP award. Which ex-cited you the most?Parker: Tough question. I would have to say...both. (he laughs) but, really, it was the MVP award at the 2007 NBA championships. That was special. HSSM: Tim Duncan. What does he mean to you?

Parker: He is probably one of my best mentors and friends. HSSM: Your best rival in the NBA?Parker: It has to be the Los Angeles Lakers. HSSM: How long will you be playing for the Spurs?Parker: I just resigned for four more years. I love being a Spurs.HSSM: In your rookie season you became the starter and played in 77 games. How did you feel?Parker: I made it. I was ner-vous but then I just started playing my game. HSSM: Let’s talk about the NBA Finals in 2007. Playing

against Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavs. Did you expect to sweep the Cavs in four games? Parker: That was unbeliev-able. We were on fire. HSSM: You were on fire too. You averaged 24.0 points during the series too.Parker: That was special. Be-ing a small point guard at 6’2” and playing NBA basketball all comes with dedication. I love this game. I can’t wait for this season to start.HSSM: Final thoughts for high school athletes?Parker: Follow your dreams and live it.HSSM: Good luck.
