BS 4395 Part 1 Calculation of Bolt Length Correct T ightening of Friction Grip Bolt s The grip length, i.e. the total thickness of the members to be bolted together, should be added to the length shown in the table below. This allows for the thickness of one through hardened washer, the nut and sufficient bolt protrusion through the nut. A further 3mm should be added if a load indicating washer is used. If the length obtained is between bolt lengths, the total length should be rounded up. The friction grip principle depends on tightening each HSFG correctly. The direct tension method uses a spe- cially hardened load indicating washer, which has pro- trusions on one face. As the nut is tightened, the pro- trusions are flattened and the gap between the load indicator face and the bolt head is reduced. The gap is measured by a feeler gauge.
