Making a positive difference
to students’ achievements
and experiences, maintaining
the highest expectations and
inspiring self belief
Highgate Wood School is certainly a fantastic
place, with great staff and amazing students.
We have played a part in the education of
some very remarkable individuals. From
Robert Peston, the BBC’s business editor who
played a key role in breaking the banking crisis
story, to Gary McKinnon, allegedly the biggest
military computer hacker of all time, and from
the actress Scarlett Johnson, currently starring
in Pramface, and Anna Shaffer in Hollyoaks, to
former England footballer Laurie Cunningham,
fashion designer Oswald Boateng, DJ Judge
Jules, music producer and composer Mat Zo
and the singer Sonique.
The Evening Standard declared Highgate Wood
School among the “six of the best London
comprehensives” because of our alumni’s
successes and we continue to support
extraordinary people and impressive
achievements.
In summer 2014 our Sixth Form maintained its
seven year trend of increasing success and
improved performance with 83% of all courses
examined achieving a grade at A* to C, with
more than half of those taking the top A* - B
grades. This matches our excellent results from
last year and builds on our previous records:
79% in 2012, 78% in 2011 and 71% in 2010.
INTRODUCTION
“Highgate Wood is great, it’s fantastic.
It’s got a wonderful atmosphere — it’s
really hugely impressive”
Rt Hon Nick Clegg June 2013
Highgate Wood students are now taking
degrees in a wide range of disciplines from
History, Politics, Economics, Maths and
English to Biochemistry, Zoology, Psychology
and Chemical Engineering, and are studying
in universities across the country, including
Cambridge, UCL, East Anglia, Sussex,
Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Bristol and
Birmingham.
Head Teacher Patrick Cozier, is very pleased
with the results from the perspective of the
school, but equally delighted by what this
means for the individuals concerned, with
“the wide range of degree options students
look forward to promises challenging and
exciting futures. We are certainly proud of
them all and wish them well.”
Head of Sixth Form Nick Charlesworth knows
the stories behind this success and the efforts
that were involved. “Students and staff
worked incredibly hard for these results and
it is nice to see such hard work rewarded. The
large number of success stories is a real
inspiration to the whole school.“
The Sixth Form helped me grow in self-
confidence and achieve my best.
ABOUT US
Choosing where and what to study after Year
11 is probably the most important decision
you’ve ever had to make. It’s a choice that will
not only shape the next two years but could
influence the course of your whole life.
You will be studying subjects you enjoy in a
completely different way to GCSE, whilst
developing as a person and deciding where
your next steps should take you. You’ll discover
new freedoms, new responsibilities and a
world of choices and opportunities. You will be
challenging yourself as an individual, gain new
independence and get to know who you really
are.
Some of our students will aspire to study
medicine or law, apply to Oxbridge or one of
the elite Russell Group universities. Others will
be considering a swifter entry into the world of
work, or possibly a gap year before taking on
the degree course of their choice. Whatever
your aspiration or dream, we will be there to
help, support and guide you.
"Students’ good achievement is secured
through an appropriately diverse curriculum
offer and they are well prepared for the next
stage of their lives. Sixth Form students
speak highly of the provision and are
empowered to develop as increasingly
independent learners."
Ofsted Nov 2011
Highgate Wood School Sixth Form has an
experienced team of personal tutors. The
tutor team includes Heads of Subject from
across the school - English, Maths, Science,
Social Sciences, History, Media Studies, Art
and Economics - who work with students in
mixed tutor groups, supporting them from the
beginning of their courses, through to their
final examinations and their applications to
university. The Head of Sixth Form also
manages an additional support programme for
Oxbridge, Medicine and Law applicants.
As well as the Head of Sixth Form and the
tutor team, students are supported by two
Deputy Heads of Sixth Form: Sam Birnie, and
Tom Pateman, a 6th form extra-curricular co-
ordinator, Maria McGurk and a Sixth Form
Manager, Barbara Lewis.
Due to the success of our students, and the
effectiveness of our provision, Highgate Wood
School Sixth Form has steadily grown over the
years, attracting more and more students
from other schools as well as those for whom
Highgate Wood is already very familiar. There
are currently 264 students in the Highgate
Wood School Sixth Form.
Smaller classes and good teachers help
you to understand, learn and improve.
Starting in September 2015, the current system
of A Levels will begin to undergo radical
change, with the government replacing the AS/
A2 system which has been in existence since
2000. To complicate matters there will be a
period of up to three years when candidates
will take new A Levels in some subjects and old
A Levels in other subjects.
Given that some of the new A Level subject
specifications for teaching in September 2015
are only now being made available and the
new specifications for the other A Level
subjects (to be taught from September 2016 or
September 2017) will not be published for
some time it is too early for us to make a final
decision about the structures we will adopt. In
common with other schools and colleges we
are still considering different options.
At the time of publication, it is very likely that
for the first year of the new A Levels we will
maintain our existing system so most of our
students will study four subjects in Year 12 and
will take AS examinations in all four, regardless
of whether they are new or old A Level
specifications. Then, in most cases, students
will be expected to drop one subject, having
secured an AS qualification in it, and proceed to
study three subjects in Year 13.
A LEVEL REFORMS
“new exams will be more rigorous and
will provide students with the skills and
knowledge needed for progression to
undergraduate study.”
Michael Gove April 2014
In the first year of the changes the main
impact of the reforms will be the way it will
influence our entry requirements for different
courses, and will also have an impact on the
courses that we will be able to offer in
September 2015.
We fully intend to maintain our existing wide
offer of A Level and Level 3 BTEC courses at
Post 16*, but we also anticipate there will be a
need to offer a range of alternative courses.
Information on these courses, together with
confirmation of changes to existing courses,
will appear on the Highgate Wood School
Sixth Form website as the situation develops.
It is expected that universities will continue to
make offers of places based on three A Levels.
*Provision and availability of courses at Post 16 is
always dependent on the number of applicants who wish to enrol onto the course.
I got the support I needed to help me meet
the challenge of Sixth Form learning .
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Different courses require different entry
qualifications. These requirements are
developed to ensure that you are placed onto
the right course, and onto a pathway where
you will be able to succeed and achieve.
Traditionally students at Highgate
Wood School Sixth Form need to
meet a specific entry
requirement that is based on
their best five A* - C grades at
GCSE, with particular emphasis
on their results in English,
mathematics and also,
frequently, in the specific subject
that they wish to study. With the
advent of the new A Levels we
will also be looking at another
entry requirement. This is based on the
applicants’ best eight GCSE grades.
From September 2015 entry to courses at Post
16 will also be determined by Average Point
Score based on the 8 best results achieved at
GCSE (or GCSE equivalent). For students taking
four A-levels the required APS is 5.6 or over.

Which subjects are changing in September 2016?
Highgate Wood Sixth Form is fully staffed with
specialist teachers for each of our A Level and
other Level 3 subjects.
Courses are timetabled for nine hours per
fortnight and teaching is generally split
between two members of staff. Having two
teachers provides students with a variety of
teaching styles and safeguards continuity
should a teacher be away from school.
All Sixth Form courses provide the opportunity
to continue to completion of the full A Level or
Level 3 qualification. While you probably want
to reduce the number of subjects you follow in
Year 13 we guarantee you will able to continue
with any course that you start and successfully
complete in Year 12.
Students will also have the opportunity to
apply to follow the Extended Project course
during Year 12, leading to an additional
qualification valued especially by Russell Group
Universities and Oxbridge This involves a
demanding piece of research that allows you to
demonstrate some of the higher skills and
capabilities that the top universities are
expecting to see.
OUR CURRICULUM
"The popular Sixth Form enjoys a
positive reputation locally and, through
good leadership and management, it
complements the provision provided in
Years 7 to 11. Some of the most effective
teaching is in the Sixth Form."
Ofsted Nov 2011
Subjects are available in Blocks and it is not
always possible to take the exact choice of
subjects you may wish to. However, we do our
best to ensure that every Sixth Form student
is able to take the subjects that will give them
the best chance of success.
I am glad I took on the Extended Project. It
showed me how far I could go.

post-16 education.

an established relationship with Hillcrest

the Sixth Form travel to South Africa where
they work with children who have been
affected by HIV/AIDS, teaching them
English, maths, music and sport and also
helping to paint and decorate the school
buildings.
Student Leadership
We have a Student Leadership programme
offering over 30 volunteering opportunities
in the school and local community, including
organising peer mentoring, running
lunchtime clubs, classroom support and
paid duties around the school. These
activities not only help the community, they
also provide the evidence of experience that
is so useful for UCAS and employment
Malaysia 2014
There’s much more to our successful Sixth Form than just great exam results.
FACILITIES
Wi-Fi access is enabled for all Sixth Form
students who have access to the BYOD (bring
your own device) network. This allows sixth
form students to connect their smartphones as
well as ipads, tablets and laptops.
A text messaging system is used in the sixth
form to allow tutors and teachers message
students directly to their phones with
important information about courses and
events.
Highgate Wood School sixth form also has a
dedicated admin team to support students
with the requirements for university admission
and to help them with the various enrichment
opportunities that are available. These include
the Step Forward Initiative and the Arcadia
Work Experience Programme which are both
schemes available at Highgate Wood Sixth
Form to help students with their future
employment prospects.
Our Sixth Form is also now part of the Future
First scheme. This programme enables
students to connect with Highgate Wood
School alumni who have already forged
careers for themselves and are enjoying
success in a wide range of professions, from
medicine to construction and from computer
programming to art and design.
Students in the Highgate Wood Sixth Form
enjoy the exclusive use of two purpose-built
spaces. The Sixth Form Common Room is a
social area with freeview television, a Wi-Fi
network, internet-enabled PCs and a vending
machine.
The Sixth Form Study area is accessed using a
Sixth Form smartcard. It is a dedicated post-16
space for private study, equipped with desks,
PCs and the facility to loan laptops for use
within the study area or elsewhere within the
school.
The school Dining Hall is open to Sixth Formers
throughout the school day, and the space is
frequently used by students who wish to study,
as well as to relax and have coffee.
It is important that all applicants understand
that the capacity of our Sixth Form is
limited. It is restricted by our staffing levels
and our available accommodation. Demand
for places at Highgate Wood School has
never been higher and it may not be
possible to meet the individual subject
preferences of all applicants. Similarly, if
there is insufficient demand for a particular
course, the school reserves the right to
withdraw it.
SUBJECTS The school will provide individual advice
and guidance to all students following the
receipt of applications to join our Sixth
Form and following the publication of GCSE
results.
