Hiking & Outdoors
It has been a while since we had our last
Newsletter (November 2009), and since
then the group has changed a lot. At that
time we where 451 members and 3 Event
Organizers and now we are 999 members
and 40 Event Organizers.
This is happening because of active Event
Organizers (new and old ones) with great
energy and fresh ideas that have suggested
new type of events. I want to say thank you
to all of them, because without their effort
this group would not be as incredible as it is.
If you want to be an Event Organizer
contact me. We need people with energy
and ideas.
I would like to send you a Newsletter
regularly, but in order to do that I will need
people helping me with their effort and/or
new ideas for content, otherwise I’m not
going to be able to find enough time. Contact
me if you want to collaborate in future
Newsletters.
I want to send a special thank you to
Yolanda for her effort writing her first
experiences with the group, motivating me to
launch again the Newsletter. I hope that this
can motivate other people to be more active.

Ha pasado algún tiempo desde la
publicación de la última Newsletter
(Noviembre del 2009) y desde entonces el
grupo ha cambiado mucho. Por aquel
entonces éramos 451 miembros y 3
Organizadores de Eventos y ahora somos
999 miembros y 40 Organizadores de
Eventos.
Todo esto está sucediendo gracias a
Organizadores de Eventos (antiguos y
nuevos) con una gran energía e ideas
frescas que han propuesto nuevos tipos de
eventos. Desde aquí, quiero agradecerles su
esfuerzo, porque sin él este grupo no sería
lo increíble que es.
Si quieres tú también ser Organizador de
eventos contacta conmigo. Necesitamos
gente con energía e ideas.
Me gustaría poder enviaros una
Newsletter regularmente, pero para poder
hacerlo necesito a gente que quiera
ayudarme con su esfuerzo y/o ideas de
contenido, de otro modo no podré encontrar
el tiempo para ello. Contacta conmigo si
quieres colaborar en Newsletters futuras.
Desde aquí quiero enviar un
agradecimiento especial a Yolanda por su
esfuerzo en describir sus primeras
experiencias con el grupo, y que me ha
vuelto a motivar para lanzar de nuevo las
Newsletters. Espero que esto anime a otras
personas a ser más activas en el grupo.

Una nueva etapa
Hiking & Outdoors
Apart from Meetup, the group has
presence at Twitter and Facebook. You can
access them by clicking on the links on the
left side of the group’s site.
Sometimes, it happens that you can see a
new event on Facebook and Twitter before
you receive the email from Meetup. This
happens because sometimes Meetup
emails have a delay of some minutes
(sometimes more than 10 minutes).
Follow our group at Fecebook and Twitter
and sometimes you will know sooner that a
new event has been published.
Aparte de Meetup, el grupo tiene
presencia en Twitter y Facebook. Puedes
acceder a sus páginas pulsando sobre los
enlaces de la parte izquierda de la página
del grupo.
A veces sucede que uno se entera antes
de los nuevos eventos por Facebook o
Twitter antes que recibiendo el email de
Meetup. Esto sucede porque los emails de
Meetup sufren a veces un retraso en el
envío (a veces de más de 10 minutos).
Sigue a nuestro grupo en Facebook y
Twitter y a veces te enterarás antes que un
nuevo evento se ha publicado.

So do not give up that soon, you can do
it!! I only took me 10 days as a "hiker" and
I’d like to share my short experience with
anyone who wants to read it, whether you
are a new hiker or an old one. It’s said "the
information is power" and the better we
know how "this world" (the Meetups) works,
the more we will enjoy it (well, this is one of
my philosophies, but you do not have to
agree). However, I’m sure that somebody will
be interested
Before going further, I’d like to introduce
myself: my name is Yolanda and I like doing
different sports and adventure activities and
I joined this group because I have a friend
who is already a member and has been
explaining to me various activities that he
has been doing (Canyoning, Night hike and
dinner in La Mola, Pica d'Estats ....). I knew
nothing about the group until two weeks ago
when I said to my friend that I would like to
participate in one event (Climb Puigmal and
visit Nuria) that he told me he had joined.
And what was my surprise when I received
the following answer: "you can not join me,
the group is closed" ... I can not join you?
Group?, Which group? I was more than
flabbergasted. I thought he was abducted, I
could not understand anything (he spoke
about the activities but not about the
group!). But wait! he is just a hiker like you
and me, who likes the mountains and
practice English.

¡Pues no desistas, que muy pronto podrás
estrenarte! Yo sólo llevo 10 días como
“hiker” y me gustaría compartir mi escasa
experiencia con todo aquel que quiera
leerla, ya sea de nueva adquisición, o lleve
ya algún tiempo. Ya lo dicen, “la información
es poder” y cuanto mejor sepamos cómo
funciona “este mundillo”, más podremos
disfrutar (bueno, esta es una de mis
filosofías, pero no tienes por qué coincidir).
Yo, de todas formas, comparto, que seguro
que a alguien le podrá interesar.
Antes de seguir y para que te sitúes: me
llamo Yolanda, me gustan distintos deportes
de aventura y a este grupo me apunté por
un amigo que ya está dentro y que lleva
poniéndome los dientes largos desde hace
mucho tiempo con las distintas actividades
en las que ha participado (barranquismo,
Night hike and dinner in La Mola, Pica
d’Estats…. ). Yo no sabía nada del grupo
hasta que hace dos semanas le dije que me
apuntaba a una excursión al Puigmal (Subir
al Puigmal y visitar Nuria) que él iba a hacer.
Y, cuál fue mi sorpresa, al recibir la
siguiente respuesta “no puedes, el grupo
está cerrado”… ¿que no puedo? ¿Grupo?,
¿qué grupo? Patidifusa es poco. Yo pensaba
que estaba abducido, pero no, simplemente,
es un hiker más, como tú o como yo, al que
le gusta la montaña y practicar el inglés.

Imagine, as fast as I had the web page I
looked through it. I have to admit that before
applying for membership, I was reading the
page, its activities, getting some information
about this group that represented a total
new concept for me.
The truth is that I quickly sent my
membership request (wow, how
bureaucratic seems it!). And as fast as I was
accepted, I began to "investigate" what this
Meetup can offer, how to act in each case,
the various activities, events, accepted
members, waiting lists and then, the
questions appeared again:
• The Meetup is a center for hikers? Do I
have to pay a tuition?
• Will I be able to keep up? Am I strong
enough?
• When the organizer in his description of
the activity level indicates "moderate" or
"8-9hours time", is he talking from a
conservative point of view, pessimistic,
optimistic, realistic, but from my reality or
his?
Imagínate… tan rápido me pasó la página
web me puse a mirar. Reconozco que antes
de solicitar ser miembro, estuve mirando la
página, sus actividades, la información que
da sobre este grupo que para mí me
suponía un concepto totalmente nuevo.
La verdad es que no tardé en decidirme y
eché mi solicitud (¡vaya!, ¡qué burocrático
parece todo!). Y nada, en cuanto me
aceptaron me puse a “investigar” lo que
este Meetup puede ofrecer, la manera de
actuar, las distintas actividades, los eventos,
los aceptados, listas de espera y claro,
volvieron los interrogantes:
• ¿es un centro de excursionistas? He de
pagar cuota?
• ¿seré capaz de seguir el ritmo? ¿tengo
nivel suficiente?
• cuando el organizador, en la descripción
de la actividad, indica nivel “moderate” o
“duración 8-9horas”, ¿qué criterio está
siguiendo –habla desde un punto de vista
conservador, pesimista, optimista,
realista, pero, desde mi realidad o la
suya?

• How can I sign up if the events fill up
quickly? Should I buy a blackberry ?
• When I sign, should I write a comment in
the box?
• I am not Speedy Gonzalez and the event
already has people on the waiting list, is it
worthwhile to join the Waiting list?
• Can I invite someone who is not a hiker? I
agree to an activity and I have doubts,
what can I do?
• I do not know anyone, I am a shy person
and I'm not used to such situations,
should I go or not?
To be honest, I can tell you that at first,
without any contact or knowing anyone, it
seems very odd and strange. And that is
why, prior to sign up for any tour or activity, I
joined the event called Get Together, which
is an event organized every two weeks by
Anchel, in order to allow people to ask him
all the questions we have while drinking a
beer and new hikers like you an me have the
opportunity to know other members of the
group.
• ¿cómo puedo apuntarme si los eventos
se llenan rápidamente? ¿me compro una
blackberry?
• Cuando me apunto, ¿debo escribir algún
comentario en la casilla
correspondiente?
• No soy Speedy González y el evento ya
tiene gente en la lista de espera, ¿vale la
pena apuntarse a la lista de espera?
• Me aceptan en una actividad y me
asaltan dudas, ¿qué puedo hacer?
¿puedo invitar a alguien que no esté en el
meetup?
• No conozco a nadie, soy una persona
tímida o no estoy acostumbrada a este
tipo de situaciones, ¿me lanzo o no?
Siendo sincera puedo decirte que al
principio, sin contacto alguno, todo parece
muy raro y extraño. Y es por eso que, antes
de apuntarme a ninguna excursión me
apunté al Get Together, que es un evento
que Ánchel organiza cada dos semanas con
la finalidad de que nuevos hikers como
nosotros tengamos la oportunidad de
ponerle nombre y cara al resto de
participantes del Meetup, que también
tienen dudas o que, simplemente, tienen
ganas de tomar una cerveza, así como
también sirve para poder solucionar, si no
todas nuestras dudas, parte de ellas.

I was in a Get Together event on Thursday
June 30th and I got answers and eager to
participate in an event. So when I saw one
that could be ok for me I signed up (I know
my weaknesses and strengths), and well, I’m
not lying when I admit that I also signed up
for another that looks good (but maybe is a
little difficult for me).
The first event that I joined has been
"Montcau and Mola." It was a great one.
Excepting Anchel, who I knew from the Get
Together event, I knew no one else. But I did
not care. In fact I didn’t know who was
coming. So there was the possibility that I
didn’t recognized the group (or vice versa)
and I would have been there alone! No I'm
kidding.
Yo asistí a uno el pasado jueves 30 de
junio y salí con muchas respuestas y con
muchas ganas de participar en algún
evento. Así que nada, en cuanto vi uno que
podía estar a mi altura me apunté (que una
se conoce sus debilidades y fortalezas), y
bueno, no voy a mentirte, también me
apunté a otro que pinta muy bien y que
espero no romper las estadísticas del
organizador.
El primero ha sido “Montcau and la
Mola”. La excursión fue genial. Excepto a
Ánchel, que lo conocía del Get Together, no
conocía a nadie más. Pero no me
importaba. De echo tampoco sabía que
vendría él. Así que había la posibilidad de
que, ¡no hubiera reconocido al grupo en
nuestro punto de encuentro y me hubiera
quedado plantada!! No, es broma.

It was very well organized (meeting point
and time, the cars and drivers, the path...)
and very funny people, wanting to spend a
Sunday laughing and enjoying something we
all have in common, the mountain. We keep
on the group pace, stopping and enjoying
the scenery. There have been no injuries but
plenty of laughs, beautiful landscapes, a
nice time. It’s been a success!
Estaba muy bien organizado (punto y
hora de encuentro, los coches que vendrían,
la ruta…..) y la gente muy divertida, con
ganas de pasar un domingo riendo y
disfrutando de algo que todos tenemos en
común, la montaña. Hemos ido al ritmo del
grupo, parando y disfrutando del paisaje. No
ha habido ningún lesionado pero sí muchas
risas, unos paisajes bonitos, un tiempo que
ha acompañado bastante bien y un grupo
de personas inicialmente desconocidas pero
que han permitido que el resultado final
haya sido un éxito.

I could share with you the answers I got,
but I suggest you to join a Get Together
event and get your answers. If you can not
attend due to time availability, but you are
interested in an event, don’t doubt and write
to the organizer who will respond you as
soon as he can, really. I have not much
experience, it is true, but I’m writing to you
and sharing my knowledge in a sincere way.
I do not receive any commission for this or
any discount (unless they accept student
card).
And if you want to come but you don’t
dare, please, don’t hesitate and join us!!
People are very open, some of them
foreigners who want to continue their
hobbies but don’t know anyone, or people
like me, whose group of people with I usually
did activities like trekking, canyoning and
others has been reduced by the time.
Podría compartir contigo la cantidad de
respuestas que tengo, pero te invito a que
vengas a algún Get Together y seas tu
mismo/a quién las solucione. Si no puedes
asistir por disponibilidad horaria pero estás
interesado/a en algún evento, no dudes en
escribirle al organizador que te responderá
lo mejor que pueda, de verdad. Yo no tengo
mucha experiencia, es cierto, pero la
comparto de una manera sincera. No recibo
ninguna comisión por esto ni descuento
alguno (a menos que acepten carnet de
estudiante).
Si te apetece venir pero no te atreves no
lo dudes y ¡vente! La gente es muy abierta
ya que hay de fuera de Barcelona y de
España que tiene ganas de seguir con sus
hobbys pero que no conoce a nadie, o gente
como yo, que, por casuística, el grupo de
amigos que hacían trekking y otra serie de
actividades se ha visto muy reducido.

Before ending my writing I’d like to tell you
that if you see an interesting event, but it is
full, don’t hesitate and join the waiting list.
Waiting lists change very rapidly. You might
be lucky and participate. Well, I could tell you
more things, but I’d do it in a Get Together
meeting and with the organizer near (he can
absolutely answer better that anyone
there!!)

Antes de acabar con mi escrito sólo
decirte que si ves algún evento que te
interese, apúntate en la lista de espera, que
quizás puedas acabar accediendo a él. Las
listas de espera cambian rápidamente. Y
bueno, podría contarte mucho más, pero en
un Get Together y teniendo al organizador al
lado, que seguro él puede responderte
mucho mejor .

As some of you already know, you have a
survey available to inform about the
activities that you prefer to do with the
group.
The aim is not to close this survey and
keep it alive. This way you can always
change your preferences whenever you
want. In fact, sometimes new options will be
added if a member suggest a new type of
event. Trail Running is the last one that was
added.

Como algunos de vosotros ya sabéis,
tenéis disponible una encuesta para
informar de las actividades que preferís
hacer con el grupo.
El objetivo es que esta encuesta no se
cierre y esté viva para poder modificar
vuestras preferencias siempre que queráis.

nuevas posibles respuestas en base a
