Dear friends,

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gives us the Parable of the Sower. Some seeds fall on rocky ground, some among thorns, and some on fertile ground. From June 20 to 29, a group of pilgrims from St. Mary’s made the long journey to our sister parish, Sacred Heart Church, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. We tried to go with no expectations, other than to sow the seeds of friendship with the members of Sacred Heart.

Our two parishes were sown by the Holy Spirit in very different places. The lush farmland of Lancaster stands in contrast to the arid expanse of the Badlands. The first parishioners of St. Mary’s brought Catholicism with them from Europe, while the first parishioners of Sacred Heart had Catholicism brought to them. Throughout each of our parish histories, the ground has seemed rocky at times, and the thorns sometimes appeared to wrap around us. However, what we found 1,500 miles away in South Dakota was a vibrant Catholic community, where the seeds of the Sower have found good and fertile ground.

The parish staff of Sacred Heart taught us what true Christian and Lakota hospitality are. Sister Barb Bogenschutz, O.P., Director of Religious Education and Youth Ministry, greatly prepared us for our trip. Charles McGaa, the Parish Life Coordinator, showed us how Sacred Heart parish ministers to the community of Pine Ridge. Angie Stover, the Office Manager, exposed us to Lakota history and culture, and how the Catholic faith and Lakota heritage have in some ways been combined, and in other ways exist side by side. We were blessed to spend some time with Fr. Steve Sanford, S.J. whom you will remember from his visit to St. Mary’s.

We could show you all the pictures we took: the Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, the thunderstorms, and sunsets. However, the teens of St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart talking and goofing off together stands out more than any butte in the Badlands. The look on an elder’s face, as she shared her news of being cancer-free with the community, is etched in our memories more than the features of Mt. Rushmore. We were all touched in some way by the “storms” of Pine Ridge: the poverty witnessed by some, the stories of suicide and abortion on the Rez, and drug and alcohol addiction. The beautiful sunsets on Pine Ridge could be seen as bittersweet, but in Sacred Heart Church the Son rises in the hearts of Lakota, and while we went there with the intention of sowing the seeds of friendship, we also left having been sown ourselves with the love of our Lakota brothers and sisters and our sister parish of Sacred Heart. We pray God makes us fertile soil for the seeds of His love.

“If prayer is beautiful and life-giving, why is it often difficult? Why must we battle with distractions and temptations to cut our prayer short or to not pray at all? Of course, satan does not want us to pray and would prefer that we focus on ourselves rather than ‘on the things that are above’ (Col 3:2). Because of our human weakness, we are only too willing to submit to these temptations. Prayer is a grace that engages our willpower, and we have to pray even when we don’t feel like doing so (Compendium, 572).” — Columbia, July 2011

Stewardship Tithing: God’s Plan for Giving

Tithing weekend of July 10, 2011: $13,375.44

Student offerings: $2.00

From Fr. Leo. Good stewards in a parish are like the yeast in today’s Gospel. Their selfless gifts of time and talent help the parish grow and thrive, and their example inspires others to become good stewards too.

From the Pews. It has become so obvious to my husband and me that how we live out stewardship impacts how our children will live out theirs. It is an awesome responsibility.

Please drop Fr. Leo a note to let him know how stewardship (of time, talent, and/or treasure)

has made a difference in your life.

My child’s good deed for the week: Several of our children offered these as their tithe in addition to their financial gift: I cooked dinner almost all by myself. I taught my sister how to tie her shoes.

The English translation of the Roman Missal will also include updated translations of existing prayers, including some of the well-known responses and acclamations of the people.

A Prayer of Hope for Children. Dear Lord, Give me the vision to see the suffering children, forgotten by so many; Give me the will to share my bounty with the neediest boys and girls, who have so little; Give me the faith to know that through Your mighty hand, the least among us shall thrive; Do this, O Lord, so that the peace and love of the kingdom of heaven can be shared on earth. Amen.
