    a brigade of soldierscalled the rough riders todefeat the Spanish.

    Isolationism: Isolationists believed the United States should

    avoid getting involved in wars and politics with other

    countries

    Imperialism: Trying to gain power by seizing new territories.This is the opposite of isolationism

    Franz Ferdinand KILLED!

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand: The man who

    was assassinated by a Bosnian Serb. He was

    heir to the throne of Austria Hungary.

    Austria Hungary had an alliance with

    Germany.

    Austria Hungary declares war on Serbia.

    Serbia had an alliance with Russia.

    Here comes World War 1

    Central Powers ( Austria-Hungary, Germany,

    Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire) VS. The

    Allied Powers ( Great Britain, Russia, France,Italy, Japan, Serbia, and Belgium)

    The United States stilldoesnt enter thewar:

    Woodrow Wilson:

    President of the United

    States when World War 1

    broke out.

    He declared that America

    remain neutral, or in otherwords, that they remain

    and isolationist country.

    Germans use U- Boats

    Germans use submarines

    called U-Boats to attack U.S.

    merchant ships.

    In 1915 the German U-Boat

    sank a passenger ship called

    The Lusitania This attack

    killed 1,200 people, including

    214 Americans. The Germans said that it was

    carrying weapons, but it was

    unarmed.

    Zimmerman Telegram Found

    Wilson still tries to remain

    neutral and keep peace withGermany. Then a note was

    discovered and printed in

    newspapers. It suggested an

    alliance between Mexico and

    Germany against the United

    States. The note is known as the

    ZIMMERMAN TELEGRAM

    The U.S. enters the war

    On April 6, 1917 the U.S. enters warjoining the alliedpowers and declaring war on Germany.

    On November 11th, 1918 anarmistice, or truce, ended the

    war.
