History of the Computer and Internet!

Carley 3rd period

Microcomputers hardware components.

• Microcomputers have 4 types of hardware components.• This would contain the Input Devices, this is used so that the computer can accept data. Also

the keyboard, CD-ROM drive, disk drive, and a mouse, this is examples of input devices.• Memory is IC’s inside the base unit that will store your data electronically. • There is a thing called the CPU, which stands for Central Processing Unit. This unit helps

controls the flow of data between the computer’s different units that they have, and it also processes the data.

• The Output Devices, such as the monitors and printers. Those are the common visual output devices. The output devices are the devices that will display or it will store processed data. The most common storage output advice would have to be a hard drive, the diskette, and CD-ROM.

First Generation Computers.

• The first computer was built in the years 1939 and 1942. They named the first computer, “The Atanasoff-Berry Computer. The person that invented it was John Atanasoff, he was a math and physics professor. He built the computer at Iowa State University, and he didn’t receive full credit for it until 50 years later.

Debug

• The meaning that people used debug for, was whenever there was a problem with the computers hardware or the code, or in other words programming error. This word has been around for years. Grace Murray Hopper is also know for using the term debug.

The Internet!• Internet and the Transmission Control Protocols were developed in the

year of 1973. It was developed by an American computer scientist Vinton Cerf. This was a part of a project, they had been sponsored by the United States Department of Defense Advance research Projects Agency. Robert Kahn was directing them, he was an American engineer. They developed this program because they thought that it was help for research, as in education purposes and more.

Babbage’s Analytical Engine!

• The designed of the Analytical engine was around the year 1833. It was planned to store data in a memory unit. This analytical engine was designed to perform many calculations, it would do this by following a set of instructions, or programs. This design was never built, it was jut to design and serve as a model for the modern computers.

Herman Hollerith invention.

• Herman Hollerith designed a machine that was called the tabulating machine. It took him eight years to actually complete this machine. He used this invention to read, count, and sort things. It took him one year to accomplish this, it usually would take him 10 years. In the year 1896, he finally had a company so he could sell his invention.

ENIAC• The abbreviation for ENIAC stands for Electronic Numerical

Integrator and Computer. It was carried out by a guy named John Mauchly. When they built this there challenge for it was to speed up the tedious mathematical calculations, because they used this in the army to produce the artillery firing tables. This was built at the University of Pennsylvania

Program

• A program for a computer is the set of instructions. The program usually talks about applications, utilities, or services of the computer.

Vacuum tubes!

• The benefit of the transistor of the vacuum tubes are because the first computers used to run off of thousands of vacuum tube that could take up a whole room. They have little computer chips that we have today. The vacuum tubes had filaments within the envelope, which that is similar to light bulbs. Filaments heat and release electrons, which creates negative charge electron clouds.

Binary system

• A binary system is when you Calculate only using 1’s and 0’s. The Binary System only contains of only two numbers, and no more than that.
