History of the Equal Rights Amendment
• Women were granted the right to vote in 1920
• The 19th amendment did not fully end discrimination of women
• It was also a time when many women were also opposed to women's liberation

The Birth of The Equal Rights Amendment
• In 1923 the suffragists met again to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the 1848 Woman’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls.
• Brought up the inequalities regarding women after the 19th Amendment was passed
• At this event, suffragist Alice Paul proposed the "Lucretia Mott Amendment"
After the 19THamendment women still lacked equality
in the following areas
• Education • Sexual liberation • Women in the labor force• Health • Political representation
"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or
abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex."
Second Wave Feminism
• Freedom from legal sex discrimination, required an Equal Rights Amendment that affirmed the Constitution to all citizens.
• More women became conscious of the necessity for women's rights
•Women organized to demand their rights as citizens and persons
• on March 22, 1972 The Equal Rights Amendment passed the U.S. Senate and then the House of Representatives,
• The proposed 27th Amendment was sent to the states for ratification.
• Congress placed a seven-year deadline on the ratification process.
• the ERA only received 22 of the necessary 38 state ratifications.
• The pace slowed as opposition began
