Preface

This document describes the prerequisites, import method, and display information for dashboards customized for the VMware vCenter Operations Manager to display Hitachi storage device performance information collected by the Hitachi Storage Adapter for VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite. This document does not describe how to configure the vSphere environment or the Hitachi storage system management software, nor does it describe how to install the Hitachi Storage Adapter, all of which are required prior to using the storage adapter dashboard. For assistance in completing the prerequisite system configuration, contact your vSphere environment administrator, Hitachi storage system management software administrator, or your VM administrator.

This document also includes troubleshooting information for issues occurring while using the Hitachi storage adapter. Your VM administrator can use the information contained in this document to pinpoint the cause of the issue. If the cause of the issue is on the Hitachi storage adapter side, contact Hitachi Storage Adapter support; however, if the cause is found in the vSphere environment or with the Hitachi storage system management software, contact the appropriate administrator to verify the environment, investigate the cause, and resolve the issue.

Overview

The Hitachi Storage Adapter dashboard is a VMware vCenter Operations Manager dashboard customized to display Hitachi storage system performance information collected by the Hitachi storage adapter. Each dashboard view is described in Displaying a Dashboard.

The system requirements, limitations, and product package contents are described below.

System Requirements

The prerequisite system requirements that must be met to import and display the expected information on the dashboard is described below.

The storage adapter dashboard requires that the Hitachi Storage Adapter be installed and is operating normally; thus, all system requirements for the Hitachi Storage Adapter must be met as described in the Hitachi Storage Adapter for VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite User’s Guide.

Hardware Prerequisites

Refer to the Hitachi Storage Adapter for VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite User’s Guide.

Software Prerequisites

The requirements which are not described in the Hitachi Storage Adapter for VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite User's Guide are described below.

The Hitachi Storage Adapter for VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite must be installed and the performance information already collected.

VMware Tools

Some dashboards refer to VM metrics were created by VMware Tools. Accordingly, VMware Tools must be installed and operated on the virtual machine that VMware vCenter Operations Manager monitors. Limitations and Considerations

When importing a dashboard

Metric collection

Make sure that all the metrics to be displayed in a dashboard have been collected before importing the dashboard. See Displaying a Dashboard for descriptions of each dashboard view.

Note There must be one or more datastores by Dynamic Provisioning Volume within the vSphere environment that is being monitored. If all datastores are created with Physical Logical Devices, dashboards cannot be applied.

Dashboards requiring VMware Tools

Table 1-3 lists the dashboards which require VMware Tools for displaying normally.

Importing Dashboards

This chapter describes the import procedure for the dashboard.

Installing and running VMware Tools

Because some dashboards refer to metrics created by VMware Tools, when you use the dashboard, you must install and run VMware Tools on the virtual machine that the VMware vCenter Operation Manager is monitoring. For dashboards requiring installation and running of VMware Tools, see When importing a dashboard. For the installation method of VMware Tools, refer to the installation and setup guide for the vSphere environment.

Collecting information using the Hitachi Storage Adapter

Most of the information on the dashboard is collected by the storage adapter. Accordingly, the storage adapter is installed on the vCenter Operations Manager, a storage adapter instance is created, then the collection of the performance information of the target storage system is started. See the Hitachi Storage Adapter for VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite User's Guide for the installation method of the Hitachi Storage Adapter and the creation of a Hitachi Storage Adapter instance.

Importing a super metric

Some dashboards use super metrics. Accordingly, when you use the dashboard, you need to import super metrics and allocate it to the designated resource in advance. For dashboards requiring importing and allocating of super metrics, see When importing a dashboard.

The import method of super metrics is shown as follows. 1. Log in to Custom UI (https://<IPaddress>/vcops-custom/) of vCenter

Operations Manager with administrator’s account. 2. Select ENVIRONMENT from the top menu and select SUPER METRICS...

from the displayed drop-down list. The Super Metrics window is displayed.

3. From the Super Metrics window, Select Super Metric Editor tab and click Import. The Import Super Metric window is displayed.

4. Specify a super metric file with the Browse button in Super Metrics window, and click Import button. See When importing a dashboard for the Super Metric to Import.

5. Click OK in the Super Metrics window. The Import Super Metric window is closed and the imported super metrics name is displayed.

Applying a super metric

Super metrics are applied to the resource in order to collect the imported super metrics. The procedure for applying super metrics to the resource is shown below.

1. Login to Custom UI (https://<IPaddress>/vcops-custom/) of vCenter Operations Manager with administrator’s account.

2. Mouse over ENVIRONMENT in the Top menu. and select SUPER METRICS from the displayed drop-down list. The Super Metrics window is displayed.

3. From the Super Metrics window, select Package Editor tab and click Add New Super Metric Package icon. The Super Metric Package Info is displayed in the Super Metrics window.

4. Input a Super Metric Name as shown in Table 1-4 in the Package name field on the Super Metric Package Info area. Also, select the checkbox to the corresponding super metric in the Super Metric to Configure field.

5. Click OK on the Super Metric Package Info area. 6. Click OK on the Super Metrics window. The Super Metrics window

disappears. 7. Mouse over ENVIRONMENT in the Top menu and select ENVIRONMENT

OVERVIEW from the displayed drop-down list. The ENVIRONMENT OVERVIEW is displayed.

8. Select Resource Kinds on the left pane, expand the list of resource types. 9. Select the resource type to apply it to the super metrics from the expanded

list. The Resource of the selected Resource type is displayed in the right pane. See Table for the applicable Resource type.

10. Select all resources from the right side panel of the list tab. 11. Click Edit Resource in the upper side of the resource list. The Resource

Management window is displayed.

12. After checking the Super Metric Package option, select the package created in the previous step from the drop-down menu.

13. Click OK. The Resource Management window is closed. 14. Mouse over ENVIRONMENT in the Top menu, and select

CONFIGURATION > RESOURCE KIND DEFAULTS from the displayed drop-down list. The Manage Resource Kind Defaults window is displayed.

15. Select the resource type applying the super metrics from the list. Select the package which was created in the previous step from the drop down menu of Super Metric package

16. Click OK. The Manage Resource Kind Defaults window is closed.

Importing a dashboard file

The dashboard file must be imported to display the defined dashboard in the dashboard window. The dashboard file import procedure is shown below.

2. Click Import in the upper right on the display. The IMPORT window is displayed.

3. From the IMPORT window, Click Browse. Select the dashboard file, then click Import.

4. Click OK. The IMPORT window is closed.

After the dashboard file is imported, the imported dashboard is displayed in the DASHBOARDS menu. Select the imported dashboard from the DASHBOARDS menu for displaying the dashboard in the Home view.

2. Select ENVIRONMENT > ENVIRONMENT OVERVIEW. 3. Click Resource Kinds and expand the selection list. 4. Select Dynamic Provisioning Pool from the expanded list. Display all the

Dynamic Provisioning Pools in the right side. 5. Select all Dynamic Provisioning Pool from the list tab on the right panel. 6. Click Edit Resource on the upper part of the list of Dynamic Provisioning

Pools and display the resource management dialog.

7. Select the Attribute package option, then select All Attributes to Attribute package from the drop-down menu. Click OK.

8. Select a Dynamic Provisioning Pool and click Edit Resource. 9. Click Edit on the right of Attribute package. 10. Change Collection Interval (mins.) to 300, then click OK. 11. Click OK to close Resource Management. 12. Click ENVIRONMENT > CONFIGURATION > RESOURCE KIND

DEFAULTS.

13. Select Dynamic Provisioning Pool from the list. Select All Attributes to Attribute package from the drop-down menu, then click OK.

Hitachi TopN dashboard configuration widgets

Hitachi VM and Storage Relationship dashboard

The Hitachi VM and Storage Relationship dashboard displays the association of a VM in the list of VMs in the environment and the storage object. An example of the display of the Hitachi VM and Storage Relationship dashboard is shown in the figure below.

Hitachi VM and Storage Relationship dashboard configuration widgets

The Hitachi VM and Storage Relationship dashboard is configured with two widgets. The table below lists the widgets which configure the Hitachi VM and Storage Relationship dashboard. The display of each widget is described below.

Virtual Machine List

Virtual Machine List is a widget that customizes the Object List widget. It limits the display to objects where Object Types are virtual machines. The displayed contents are redrawn every 300 seconds.

VM to Storage Relationship Widget

VM to Storage Relationships is a widget which customizes the custom relationship widget. The colors of the objects change according to the integrity of each resource. Table 3-17 lists the resource type that VM to Storage Relationship displays. The displayed contents are redrawn every 60 seconds.

2. Cannot import and the message of "Not all key information was found in order to import the dashboard. Please check web.log for more details." is displayed when a super metric file was selected and executed import.

A metric which collects by Hitachi Storage Adapter is used for some super metrics. Accordingly, make sure whether Hitachi Storage Adapter has been installed normally. Also, make sure whether Hitachi Storage Adapter was created and it collects definitely. Refer to Hitachi Storage Adapter for VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite User’s Guide for the details.

3. Cannot import and the message of “The specified file type is not supported.” is displayed when a super metric file was selected and executed import.

Cannot use the super metric file having .json extension. Please use the super metric file having .xml extension.

# Problem Solution 1. Do not collect metrics of Virtual Machine. The metrics which VMware Tools created are collected by

VMware adapter. Make sure whether VMware adapter instance collects normally. VMware adapter is a default adapter type of vCenter Operations Manager. Refer to the released documents by VMware for details.

2. The metrics of the resource that Hitachi Storage Adapter collects are not collected.

Make sure whether Hitachi Storage Adapter has been installed normally. Also, make sure of whether Hitachi Storage Adapter was created and the collection is executed definitely. Refer to Hitachi Storage Adapter for VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite User’s Guide for the details.

3. Only some super metrics are not collected. Make sure whether the super metric has been imported normally. Also, make sure of whether a super metric is applied to a corresponding resource. See Importing Dashboards for the import procedure and see Displaying a Dashboard for the application procedure.

4. Some super metric values are not collected according to collection interval.

It is necessary for some super metrics to set the collection interval. See System Requirements for details.

Term Description CLPR Cache Logical Partition. The function to divide the cache on the entire storage system

logically.

Datastore Virtual area used to store a virtual machine image on ESXi. The actual area is created on a local disk or external storage system.

DP Pool Dynamic Provisioning Pool. It consists of more than one exclusive RAID group. Dynamic Provisioning Pool is the area which manages data written in the virtual volume.

ESXi VMware ESXi. A bare-metal hypervisor (a virtualization OS) of VMware, Inc.

HDP Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning. The function to assign the virtual volume to the host and use the required physical capacity according to the data writing request. It provides the virtualization of the volume capacity.

HUS VM Hitachi Unified Storage VM

LDEV Logical Device. A logical volume unit consisting of multiple physical drives

MPB Management Processor Blade. MPB is equipped with four Management Processors (MP) and each MP distributes load of processing
