vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View FeaturesvCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View extends the functionality of vCenter Operations ManagerEnterprise, and enables IT administrators and help desk specialists to monitor and manage Horizon ViewVirtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments.

vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View is based on vCenter Operations Manager Enterprise. Itcollects performance data from monitored software and hardware resources in your enterprise and providespredictive analysis and real-time information about problems in your VDI infrastructure. It presents datathrough alerts, in configurable dashboards, and on predefined pages in the Custom user interface.

The View Adapter obtains the topology from the Horizon View environment, collects metrics and othertypes of information from the desktops, and passes the information to vCenter Operations Manager.

Typical users of vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View are IT administrators and help deskspecialists. IT administrators can use vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View to get a quickoverview of how the Horizon View environment is behaving, and to view important metrics associated withtheir environment. Help desk specialists need to quickly see resources related to end users sessions, andperform basic troubleshooting to view, analyze, and resolve problems.

VMware, Inc. 9

vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View ArchitecturevCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View is based on the vCenter Operations Manager Custom userinterface, which you can use to monitor your Horizon View 5.x Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)environment.

To use vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View, you must install these components:

n Horizon View 5.0 or later. Horizon View 5.2 is recommended forvCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View 1.5. Horizon View 5.3 is recommended forvCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View 1.5.1. How vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Components Work TogetherThe vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View adapter runs on the vCenter Operations ManagervApp, or on a remote vCenter Operations Manager Collector server. The adapter collects performance datafrom the broker agent and the desktop agents and sends it to vCenter Operations Manager for analysis andvisualization.

The vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View broker agent runs on a Horizon View Connectionserver. The broker agent collects the Horizon View inventory, monitors the Horizon View infrastructure, and sends the collected data to the adapter. The broker agent pushes configuration data to the desktopagents so that they can communicate with the adapter. If you configure an events database in yourHorizon View environment, the broker agent can connect to that database and send Horizon View eventsdata to the adapter.

The vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View desktop agent runs on every virtual desktop that youwant to monitor on vCenter Operations Manager dashboards. The desktop agent uses the configurationdata that the broker agent provides to connect to the adapter. The desktop agent sends performanceinformation for the desktop it is running on directly to the vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon Viewadapter.

For Horizon View versions 5.0 and 5.1, you must install the desktop agent manually.vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon View desktop agent is installed as part of the Horizon View Agentin Horizon View 5.2 and later.

Install a vCenter Operations Manager Collector on the Remote ServerTo collect performance data from a remote data center it is recommended that you install avCenter Operations Manager remote collector locally at that data center.

Remote collectors help you distribute the load on the vCenter Operations Manager vApp for betterperformance.

CAUTION Enabling the connection between remote collectors and the Analytics VM carries serious securityimplications for your environment.

n The adapter for remote colectors does not authenticate desktops. Therefore, an attacker couldpotentially send rogue data for a desktop to vCenter Operations Manager.

n All data that is transmitted is encrypted. However, a default self-signed certificate is used. If an attackergains access to this certificate, it might be possible to decrypt the data sent from desktop agents to theadapter. This includes the Horizon View inventory, Horizon View events, machine names, IPaddresses, user names, and general desktop performance data.

For detailed information and important considerations, see the vCenter Operations Manager for Horizon ViewSecurity Guide.

You can install a vCenter Operations Manager collector on Windows or on remote servers that run Linux. This procedure is for Windows.
