Following the interval two new faces atHJGS, Dave Evans (right) and MikeDexter (left) played a Django set, startingwith Minor Swingfollowed by I CantGive You Anything But Love. All playedon Maccaferri/Selmer look-alikes andsound-alikes, with just the rightcombination of sparkle and brashness.

HJGSthen gave a very warmwelcome to guest duo Trefor Owen andAndy Hulme who began their set with

Jerome Kerns Yesterdays. This wasfollowed by How About Youin a tastyarrangement with a beautifullyharmonized head. Their enjoyable setconcluded with Mancinis Days of Wineand Roses.

Trefors and Andys mainstreamjazz guitar set was then contrasted bythe more earthy funk-based music ofMartin and Jez whose set began withThats Why That Happenedan original

composition by Jez with a gentle bossa feel.Jez took the first solo which was imbued by aMullenish fleshy (thumb) tone. Great playingbut a little marred by tuning issues. New

strings? Or too light for the genre? Martinsplaying has become more studied and careful,exactly what is required to realize his profoundmusical vision and move away from a lickinformed approach. Their second tune, a laidback reading of Mr PC, was an altogetherfunkier affair, replete with bends, slaps andslides.

Diary of a Seven String Virgin

A blow by blow account of getting to grips (sic) with the 7 string guitar.

Week 3. I need to get used to the un-natural interval (a 5th) between the A and Ebass strings so I start practising 10ths (think 3rds but with more stringsbetween).

Still having trouble with seeing the extra string and wondering if myhands are in the right place.

Week 4. Bass string still a bit slappy so up to 76 thou. As a guitarist I wouldnormally only think to tow a car with a piece of cable this thick, still itseems to do the trick.

Start working on chords which would normally have bass on 5thstring.The mechanics of moving a finger the extra inch over provingtroublesome.

Week 5. First gig on 6 string where I started reaching over for the 7thstring. Lookslike Im going to have to decide which route to take.

Week 6. First gig on 7 string. A duo with the lovely Carol Brown singing. Havingthe extra bottom end on the guitar really fills the sound out. Im getting tolike this.

Makin It &Take Your Pick Johnny Pisano and BillyBean.

Fresh Sound Records FSR-CD 736

Back in 1970 as a cash-strapped music student, I came across acopy of Makin Itat a Birmingham flea-market. I had just enoughmoney for a tin of beans (no pun intended) and my bus farehome. As I was, even then a jazz guitar fanatic, I carefully

studied the sleeve notes. Billy Bean! Who was this player with acartoon character/comic book name? Was it a pseudonym, was he any good, was itcommercial rubbish or was it an anonymous non-jazz playing studio guitarist? All of thosequestions were running through my head. I had come across John or Johnny Pisano, as hewas then known, but knew little of his work and had yet to make the connection that he wasthe suave looking guitarist who skilfully wove the descending diminished passage from theVilla Lobos Study No 1 (for classical guitar) into his featured solo with Chico Hamilton in theclassic Jazz On A Summers Dayfilm.

Anyway my ignorance, coupled with shortage of money and some concern re thecondition of the LP (already 12 years old by then) led me to put it back in the record bin!What a stupid mistake. Ironically, John Pisano told me a similar story years later aboutseeing the name on a Charlie Ventura album and thinking surely a guy with a name like thathas to be suspect. He bought the album anyway because it also featured Dave McKenna,Johns favourite pianist at the time. He got the album home and was totally blown away byBillys playing, so much so that within months he had located Billy and insisted they gettogether. The first fruits of their work can be found on Makin It Againon which they can beheard jamming in the basement of Johns parents home in New York.

Their first official recording, for Decca, was made in Jan/March of 1958. The album:Makin Itis rather an uneven affair with predominantly fussy arrangements in the then

fashionable Third Stream style including strings, oboe, tuba and the like, mixed in withtypical West Coast period arrangements by Fred Katz, Bill Potts and Calvin Jackson. Theentire record is rescued, however, by one really stunning track: The Song Is You. This isperformed by a stripped down trio comprising Billy, John and bassist Hal Gaylor a brilliantand unsung player in his own right. The playing on this cut is mind blowing, worth the priceof the LP many times over. The technique of both guitarists is flawless, their time is perfectand their ideas and sounds complement each other perfectly. Billys early, electric, EpiphoneDeluxe has the bigger fatter, more electric, tone while Johns DAngelico Excel is moreacoustic, with that stringy floating pickup tone. Gaylors bass is big round and beautifullydriving. The results are sublime, a real jazz guitar masterpiece!

Take Your Pickthe duos follow-up album for Decca is an altogether more successfulaffair. Again it features predominantly arrangements in the popular West Coast style (thinkShorty Rogers, Gerry Mulligan, Marty Paich) with only one Third Stream arrangement:Pastorale, the most ambitious but, in my opinion, weakest track on the album. This albumalso features several great originals by John and Billy such as the title track, Fat Feet, BillysBeanery and Pixieall of which prove perfect vehicles for the duo. Billys tone is wonderfullyfat and full his drive is unsurpassed in the vein of early Joe Pass (CED,Catch Meetc.) andmid 60s Pat Martino (The Prestige albums) and his lines have the creativity and skill ofClifford Brown. If, arguably, Billy is the stronger soloist, John is the chord master with a greatrhythmic tone and beautiful voice leading. However, Billy is no slouch as a chord player andJohn is a perfectly capable soloist. In short, the perfect team.

Take Your Pickwas my introduction to Billy. I once paid the price of a small car toobtain a clean copy in an auction. To return to my earlier story, several years after passingon Makin Ita friend and great jazz player (Mel Gibbons) lent me a copy of Take Your Pick.It was, like my first experience of Wes Montgomery, life changing, through lifes ups anddowns Take Your Pick has always been with me, one of the tiny handful of possessionsfrom which I am inseparable.

Miss this reissue at your peril!!

Most jazz guitars have magnetic pickups and jazz guitarists often have

strong views as to which type or make of pickup provides them with their

favoured sound. Many players will take the trouble to fit replacement pickups

in order to find the ideal sound for their taste. There is a wide choice

available. However for the player who requires a true acoustic tone for their

style of playing, Hot Club for example, all too often the choice is limited to a

microphone (mic) on a stand or an under saddle transducer. The worst case

scenario is when the guitarist has to borrow whatever mic comes with the

house P.A., point it at the instrument and hope for the best! If the player is

lucky, the mic will be one designed for instruments rather than the more

common vocal mic, (an SM58 is great for vocals but its frequency response andproximity effect which are designed to enhance vocals make it less than ideal

for instruments), and of course the stand mic requires the guitarist to maintain

a constant distance between the instrument and the mic (posture issues).

The under saddle transducer produces a distinctive electro-acoustic

sound. This is because it feels the structural vibrations of the instrument rather than hearing the sound

waves transmitted through the air, as our ears do. Extensive eq correction is often required in order to produce

an acceptable sound and even then it is not a true acoustic sound.

Microvoxoffers a solution to many problems of reproducing a true acoustic sound. The system

consists of a dedicated power supply (NB it is not a preamp) and a miniature flat response condenser mic.The mic element is housed in a small black aluminium block and faces down onto the instrument. It attaches to

the instrument by means of a Velcro pad. This method of fixing isolates the mic from unwanted structural

vibration and ensures the mic is a fixed and constant distance from the sound source.

Any pickup device is the first link in the amplification chain.Microvoxsystem mics ensure that thisfirst crucial link is as faithful to the true sound as possible.
