PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATIONInthemid-1970’sEMDdevelopedthenewGP15-1modelinanefforttooffertheircustomersareplacementfortheirmediumsizedroadswitcherswhichwerewearingout.Manyrailroads(i.e.ATSF,SP&ICG)wererebuildingtheirolderroadswitchersandEMDwantedtoofferthemadifferentoption.Unfortunatelythereweren’talotoftakersandonly310unitswerebuiltforUSrailroads.Thissmall1,500horsepowerunitcamewitharadiatorintakesectionsimilarinappearancetothespecialonethatEMDwasusingonthelargerSD40/45T-2modelsbeingproducedfortheRioGrandeandSouthernPacifictoalleviateoverheatingissuesintheirmanytunnels.Railfan’sdubbedtheselagerunits“TunnelMotors”whichledtothesmallerGP15-1’sreceivingthemoniker“BabyTunnelmotors.”ManyGP15-1’sremaininservicetodayformajorClass1railroads,regionalrailroadsandshortlines.
