Our Community Partners

HOLA has recently established a strong and viva-cious partnership with the UT’s College of Educa-tion. This summer, UT sent a Master’s in Public Health graduate student to create a project/study of HOLA’s efforts to combat obesity and promote nutrition. Next summer, UT will be sending interns to HOLA to conduct assessments and to provide ex-tensive evaluation of our programs. HOLA will also be sending one high school student to attend UT’s Summer Bridge Internship Program. UT will also send underserved youth from the UT community to HOLA for leadership programs.

HOLA has been in partnership with LMU since 2008 initially through a formal partnership with their School of Film and Television and their intensive Summer Film Creative Workshop for inner-city youth. HOLA’s participants have become part of a limited pool to be considered for admissions with a needs-based full scholarship into LMU’s Film School. In addition, HOLA partners with the College of Communications and Fine Arts and several other departments to organize shared exhibits and pro-vide opportunities for HOLA students to have ac-cess to quality training and education in film, visual arts and dance.

In Spring 2010, HOLA was chosen by the LA Philharmonic to partner with them in launch-ing a Youth Orchestra program here at HOLA for the community’s underserved youth. This new program, launching in Fall 2010, is mod-eled after Venezuela’s El Sistema initiative, one of the world’s most prestigious music education programs for youth. In the first year alone, 120 youth will engage in intensive orchestral music education and academic tutoring.

For over 2 years now, our collaboration with LACC, one of the nation’s leading children’s choirs, has expanded and enhanced HOLA’s choral offerings, create exchange, performance and cross educational opportunities including the addition of a new LACC “First Experiences” choral class for our youngest participants. This level of choral instruction and collaboration with LACC has created pathways and open doors for choristers at the higher levels of music educa-tion.

HOLA has the unique privilege of sending gradu-ating HOLA art students to the prestigious Pen-land School of Crafts in North Carolina for their summer art study. As a premiere studio art in-stitution, Penland boasts art instructors whose works are on display in the Smithsonian and popular crafts and trade magazines. Students and faculty come from all around the world to teach and learn from each other.

For over 10 years HOLA has been affiliated with LAHP, a non-profit organization that provides quality low-income housing and other essen-tial resources for disadvantaged families liv-ing in the same community as HOLA. In 2003, HOLA was given the opportunity to move into the basement of one of LAHP’s buildings. This partnership offers HOLA the space for only $1 a month and a 25-year contract with an option to renew.
