President's Message
WhewJI This 'message' is for theOctober DER GASSER already. Thisyear has really flown by. When youlook back on the calendar of events
for the past nine months, you willrealize that there were really veryfew non-Porsche weekends during thepast summer. There have been auto-crosses, concours, parades, trips,Porscheramas, but no rallys. I canalready hear the grumbling, "I don'thave a stopwatch; I don't have aCurta, so how can I rally?" Well, friends, upcoming in the very nearfuture is a 'Hare and Hound' rallyfor which you need absolutely noequipment, no real skill, but muchluck and good humor. This event isso named because the object is to'catch the hare' as it travels fromstart to finish. The hare leaves
a trail of markers for you to follow. That sounds really simple! There'sonly one catch and that is, that amarker at an intersection means the
hare turned - but nobody tells you
which way, you have to guess. Asyou can see, there are more wrongguesses than right, which of coursemakes for the fun. The person finding the hare at the finish soonestis the winner. This is really afun afternoon.
The following rally is of a moreserious type, but is designed forthe novice or beginning rallyist. The object of this type of rallyis to complete a measured distancein a given time. Penalty pointsare given for being either early orlate. Again, this is an enjoyableway to spend an afternoon seeingthe countryside and driving yourPorsche.
These rallys, the trip to Zinti^r-mann's Museum, the October dinnermeeting and the annual banquet areall that remain on the activities
calendar. We hope that as many ofyou as possible will take advantageof them.

You will notice that for next yearthere are two names for MembershipChairman. This is a first in our
club and we hope it is a sign ofthings to come. Following is astatement from each of the would-
be Membership Chairman.
First, Bob Patton.
HiJ I'd like to take this time tointroduce myself. I'm Bob Patton.Maybe you've seen my Signal Yellow91IT (with black wheels) at someRiesentoter events. I'm a relatively new member myself, having joinedonly a month before Pocono 1972.When I was first approached for theposition of Membership Chairman, Iwas a bit apprehensive, but then Ithought, why not - what better way
to get acquainted with more Porschefreaks? So I decided to accept thenomination, assuming I would run unopposed as everyone in the past hasdone for all elected positions. Nowfor the big surprise.
For the first time in Riesentoter
history, I'm Cold, there are twopeople running for one office onthe Executive Committee. Lee Her
skowitz and myself are vying forthe position of Membership Chairman, which Bob Ahrens currently holds. The election will be held at the
Dinner Meeting on October 24, (seenotice. Sept DER 6ASSER). So comeon out and vote in a real election.
And now. Lee Herskowitz.
Running for an office, especially inthe face of severe opposition, requires some avid campaigning, sohere goes; it has been pointed outby several veteran members that thisis a first for the club; it has alsobeen pointed out that this may begood for the club in terms of stimulating interest among our members.I'm not sure I agree with this philosophy and perhaps this is one ofthe reasons I am interested in theoffice of Membership Chairman.
After 3 years as a member of Riesentoter Region I have observed a considerable amount of badgering ofsemi-apathetic members. Reconsidering the situation, I don't believeit is one that should exist. Ifmembers do not wish to participate.
that should be their option. Thisdoes, however, make it difficult forinterested members to carry off anevent. I believe that many (nr/selfincluded) have been leery of expanding the membership to extensive proportions. However, it is obviousthat a large number of our membersare only interested in getting a PCAbadge on their car and a PANORAMA intheir mailbox.
An all-out and non-exclusive member
ship drive could be a partial remedyto promote increased member activity. There will always be a group whowill join and never show up, butthere will also be a percentage ofnew Members that will mold the back
bone of the club.
Bob Ahrens, our current MembershipChairman, has done a great job indrafting new members; I would aimto increase the number of members
that Bob has added. That way, bythe time our membership list hasswelled to 500+ members, we canhave a full house at meetings andevents on a regular basis.
By the way, something we all shouldconsider, regardless of who is Membership Chairman, we all can be ourown mini-Membership Chairman. Don'thesitate to stop and talk to anyPorsche owner you may meet and thenacquaint him with our club and itsactivities. Frequently, this is thesource of our most active members.
Remember, the nicest people drivePorsches.
Get with it.

Rose Valley Hillclimb, Aug 18-19
Some had it wet; some, dry. The wetwas Saturday which included the EPlPorsches. It started off wet from
overnight rains then began to rainnear the end of the first timed runs
and continued through the day. Thepits were a great quagmire and manytow cars had to be towed themselves
when the day was over.
Rose Valley is a nice hill full ofchallenging curves, including amoderately tight uphill righthander,a very tight left, a sweeping leftthat's a decreasing radius and a90 degree right at the crest of thehill. The last turn makes for an
interesting finish because it canonly be taken as a late apex. Forthe early-apexers, the outside iscambered to the outside with trees,a utility pole or an open fieldto collect the drivers. Between
the major turns are small left-rights which can be straightenedout. There were plans to pave theroad, but it didn't happen and thedrivers had to live with a verybumpy course.
Riesentoter finishes; Jay Schneider,1st Touring 1; Jess Holshouser, 1stEPl; Dick Sweigart, 2nd EPl; ConnieSheldrake, 5th EPl; Dick Weiss, 2ndCP; Ted Klaus, 2nd Formula 1.
Pagoda Hillclimb, Aug 25-26
The second running of the Pagodaclimb at Reading was smoothly run.
The climb consists of the first partof the Duryea climb course - endingat the Pagoda instead of the tower. It incorporates all the great turnsincluding 8 tight turns, one fastsweeper and one long straight. Inspite of sunny weather, most driversfound the course slippery - due toeither tree juice or oil drippings.
Riesentoter finishes: Jay Schneider,1st, Touring 1; Jess Holshouser, 3rdEPl; Dick Sweigart, 5th EPl; ConnieSheldrake, 6th EPl; Dick Weiss, 2ndCP; Ted Klaus, 3rd Formula 1; TomBeil with trans trouble, 7th Mod 2.
Tuscarora Hillclinib, Sept 1-2
PHA journeyed to McConnellsburg forthe sheer fun of running this hillin the 95 degree temperature, highhumidity heat wave over the LaborDay weekend. It was really something else - considering that mostdrivers were wearing double-layerNomex driving suits. Probably mostof us lost a few pounds after theall-day sauna. Dick Sweigart andConnie Sheldrake didn't start whenDick's engine seized on the touringrun. The damage was done at thelast hill when the oil cooler let
go, dumping all the oil. Connie wasdriving at the time and apparentlythere was too much engine time logged with no oil. The event was runso well that Saturday cars receivedfive timed runs.
Riesentoter finishes: Jess Holshous
er, 4th EPl; Dick Weiss, 3rd CP;Dave Darecola, 6th Mod 2; A1 Dere-cola, 7th Mod 2; Ted Klaus, 3rd Fl.

The end of the year is fast approach*ing and our club events are drawingto a close. Daring the past year,if nothing else, there was a varietyof events to try and please everyoneFor those who feel that other events
might have more appeal, please takethe time to let your future officersknow NOW rather than the middle of
next year. Often people think thatno one wants to listen to new ideas
but nothing is further from thetruth. Let somebody know what youwould like to do - what kind ofevent you would enjoy. I believethat the main purpose of our clubis to meet people, share and enjoywhat we have in common and thePorsche marque.
I want to thank all those who have
helped me this year with the events. Some of them might never have gottenoff the ground without your help.

RUST and the PorscheWayne Flegler
There have been numerous articleswritten about the cause, preventionand repair of rust in regard to thePorsche, but I feel compelled toadd to this subject as I am in themidst of repairing the rust damageon my own Porsche. This is the 1stin a series of 'rust' articles.
Rust in a Porsche is not to be takenlightly. The body-chassis is constructed almost entirely of sheet-metal, welded and stamped into aone piece unit. Construction ofthis type uses many closed, boxedsections and multi-layered panels. It results in light weight withgreat strength, but it also lendsitself to condensation and water
buildup. The factory admits thatnothing was done to rustproof the356 line beyond the undercoat andcaulking, which served more as asound deadener and stone cushion.
The Porsche body is pretty muchwatertight - both ways. If watergets into the interior of the car,the only way it can be removed isby evaporation or manual drying.Porsche used rubber mats and hempsound deadener that served to keep
the moisture from drying out. Youcan prove it to yourself by pullingback the floormats after several drydays and finding moisture still thereworking away at your floorpan.
The second area concerns the manybox sections where condensationworks on unprotected metal. Rustin these areas is serious because ofthe structural importance. Doors, fenders, headlight and taillightwells and rocker panels all rust dueto poor drainage and trapped dirtwhich retains moisture. The rubberdrains sometimes clog leaving theseareas wet for long periods. Batterybox locations rust away due to theaction of spilled acid on the under-coating which leaves the unprotectedmetal exposed to the elements.
Probably the most serious rust problem exists in the area of suspension. These areas should concerneveryone because of the safety (orlack of it) aspect. There are casesof suspension mounts pulling awayfrom the body. All other rust areascan be classed as cosmetic, but rust
in these areas deserves immediateattention. Next month we will lookinto the prevention of rust in somespecific areas.
