MEETING AT HOLBERT'S

This month's meeting will be held at Holbert'sPorsche + Audi, on Route 6ll (Easton Road) in Warring-ton, PA, on June 30, 1976. The meeting begins at8:30 PM, and we will be there for the introduction ofthe new Porsche 92if. Please note this so you don'tgo to Sea Watch and find nobody there. Holbert's is7 miles north of Exit 27 (Willow Grove) of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Next month, the meetings willresume at Sea Watch.

^^^CKTOP - DVSAThe Riesentoter-hosted DVSA event will again

be on a Saturday, June 26. This is held at Norris-

town Area High School (on Whitehall Road between

Route U22 and Ridge Pike). We can always use help

at these events — for course layout, lining off

pit and parking areas, registration, tech inspec

tion and timing. If you can help, we start about

7:30 - 8:00. Registration opens at 9:00 and hope

fully, the first car gets off at 10:30.

This will be a good warm-up for the Quad Reg

ional event at Christmas Village the following day,

also hosted by Riesentoter. You can't get too much

practice at sprinting, so take advantage of this

double header.

What could be a more appropriateactivity for a car club than a brewery tour?Join us on Saturday, June l^th at 1:15 PoM,for a tour of the Schaefer-Lehigh ValleyBrewery with free beer in the Stein Roomafter the tour. Afterwards, we'll moveon to Dorney Park for fun, games, and ammuse*ment park food. In the event of rain, thebrewery tour is still on (They make beer inthe rain too.) and an agreeable after-touractivity will be planned.

PORSCHES GO RACING

In May, many of us got to se<-. some good racingat the SCCA Trans Am Race at Pocono and the IMSARace at Lime Rock, Connecticut. Among the driversat Pocono were A1 Holbert (Turbo) and Mike Tillson(91 IT), both members of Riesentoter and both recentguest speakers at our meetings. A1 ran a Monza atLime Rock.

As a pit crew worker for Mike's car (usually but someone else had that n rabor thistime), I got to see the race from pit wall. It wasPorsche Turbos all the way. Although A1 diced withHurley Haywood and George Follmer all through therace, those three never dropped below third. Meanwhile, Mike, who started 27th grid position in afield of IfO cars, steadily worked his way up toI7th place. There were no pit stops by eitherRiesentoter in the 100 mile 2*ace, so all I had todo was sit there and watch the action. At the fin

ish, Hurley Haywood was only a few feet ahead of A1and George Follmer, who had dropped back a good bitwhile still maintaining third place, played a goodgame of catch up and finisned only a few feet behindAl.

Lime Rock was a whole diffei'ent story. As youmay know, IMSA has banned the Turbo because theywere afraid Porsche would continue to dominate the

series as they have all along. So, Al Holbert wentthere in a Chevrolet Monza.

It was Mike Keyser, former Porsche driver, ina Monza, Al in his Monza, and Peter (Perfect) Greggin a BMV/ leading the pack for the first part of therace. Then Peter spun the BMV/ onto the grass,barely lOO feet from where he spun the Porsche ayear ago, got going again, but soon pulled into thepits with some sort of mechanical failure. Thislet the Porsche of George Dyer into third place, agood half lap behind the Monzas. Up to the halfwaypoint, the lead Monzas were only a fev/ feet apart,

but on lap # 33 (of 66 laps), Mike Keyser came past,but no A1 Kolbert. It seems A1 lost it at West Bendand was cut of the race.

Could a Porsche possibly make up over half alap in only 33 'Hore? Ic meant gaining over a seconda lap on the Monza! Around and around and aroundthey went, each lap George Dyer's Porsche getting alittle closer to the white # i Monza of Mike Keyser.George Dyer was gaining that needed one second a lapon the Monza, and in a story-book finish, the littleblue Porsche passed the Monza on the very last lapto take the checkered flag Just ahead of it.

Yes, it was true, Porsche could still win atIMSA racing, even without the Turbos, against thethreat of the big engined Detroit cars (remember,folks, Piesentoter means "Giant Killer").

Incidently, the Program they v/ere selling atLime Pock ran an article entitled "Calling a Haltto the Porsche Parade." The Program said, "Therecord of Porsche domination at Lime Rock is total:

since the Camel GT Traveling Road Show first stoppedat LRP in 1972, Porsche hasn't been bested." Today,that statement is still true.

Then it went on to say, "But all of that ishistory: is 1976 the end of the road for Porsche?"Try as IMSA may, with their bans on the Turbos, Ifeel Porsches will still win races for many yearsto come. Maybe IMSA will have better luck with theCamel GT Challenge Series than SCCA had with theCAn-Am Series after they banned the turbochargedPorsche 917's in an effort to tempt the competitionto enter and end the domination by one marque.(Funny, there were no bans throughout all the yearsof McLaren domination.) Maybe the new All AmericanGT Class is Just what Porsche needs to stimulatethem to build even better racing cars — after all,Porsches are improving all the time.

EmasE EsHow do you like the new cover? As promised,

we changed to a new format. The artwork of Joan

Steklenski is greatly appreciated. Cover art is

once again needed, and it would be most appreciated

if it would fit with the new format.

I will be editing five more issues of Per

Gasser in my tenure at this job, and then I must

retire. The position of editor for 1977 is as yet

open. Anyone interested can see either me or anyone

on the executive committee. It's a fun job, albeit

a little time consuming, but other committments

preclude me from continuing another year.

Please come out to work and run the sprints on

the 26th and 27th. Riesentoter will host only three

sprints this year, and two of them are on this one

weekend.

Next month's feature article will be on the CIS

fuel injection system. I promised this article a

while back. I have it, but with two big races (and

Porsche victories!) nearby last month, we gave the

coverage to the races rather than the tech article.

It will be printed next month,

The Chesapeake Region is presenting for the ninth year the CHESAPEAKECHALLENGE. The CHALLENGE is a multi-region weekend consisting of a Concourd'Elegance, a Rallye, and an Autocross. Scattered throughout the weekendwill be ample time to meet with everyone. Among the many well-known PorschePushers in attendance, we are proud to announce that PCA National President"Mick" Williams will be Joining us this year. The Headquarters will be atthe Hunt Valley Inn, located off I-83 at Shawan Road, north of Baltimore.This is a prime location, with all event-sites only minutes away. Certainlythe social highlight of the weekend will be a very informal Crab Feast forour Saturday evening banquet. A repeat of last year's blowout, this includesall the steamed crabs, raw beef, crab soup, corn on the cob, hot beef, kosherfranks, salads, etc. that you can eat, plus all the beer and set ups that youcan drink.
