Rabbi’s MessageDear FHC Members and Friends – There is an idiom that goes something like “The

more I know, the more I know I don’t know.” After 30 something years of teaching Judaism, I have come to the realization that I need to know more about teaching children and adults with special needs and creating a greater level of inclusion for all people. Fortunately, there is a wonderful program called Matan Institute located nearby. And, I received an Ignition Grant from the Jewish Education Project which will allow me to participate.

From Matankids.org website: The Matan Institute is Matan’s flagship training program for Jewish professionals. Matan works with various cohorts of educators, including Education Directors, Early Childhood Educators, teachers, youth group and camp professionals. Each cohort engages in multiple in-person training days (35 hours) and on-

line learning, and every participant works with a Matan mentor on specific inclusion goals for the entire length of the Institute (usually 10 months). Based at Matan’s offices in New York City or a specific geographic region, professionals from throughout North America participate.

What better time to ‘learn new Torah’ than the season of Shavuot – the commemoration of Receiving the Torah at Mt Sinai? The opening session of the program is June 6 and 7, just a few days before Shavuot.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and insights, and sharing with you my learning. Together we can open FHC’s doors open wider so that people of all ability levels feel welcome to make FHC their Jewish home.

President’s MessageFor the FHC Men’s Club Shabbat on May 21, I

prepared my first ever D’var Torah for Torah Section Emor. With its 124 verses of dogmatic verbiage pertaining to a long series of do’s and don’ts for both Kohanim (the priestly class of Jews) as well as common Israelites, Emor also seemed to be dry, dry, dry.

I’m happy to say however that in digging in to Emor, I derived some understanding ( flavored of course by my own 21st century lens on life) of its teachings.

Emor begins by laying out the following rules for Kohanim:

1. A Kohen may not come in contact with a corpse unless the corpse belongs to a close relative (defined as father, mother, brother, son, daughter and Unmarried virgin sister)

2. A Kohen may not marry a divorcee

3. A Kohen may not marry a woman with a promiscuous past

4. A Kohen Gadol (a high priest) may only marry a virgin

5. A Kohen may not serve in the holy temple if he is physically deformed

6. Kohanim may not shave their heads or the “side growth” of their beards ( or for whatever reason make gashes in their flesh)

Much of the above could be construed in the current day as politically incorrect to say the least, however, Emor ramps it up even further when it comes to Kohanim with disabilities (herein translated as “defects”):

No man who a is blind, lame, or has a limb too short or too long, a broken leg or arm, a hunchback, a dwarf, one with a growth in his eye, a boil-scar, scurvy or crushed testes (!)…none meeting those criteria could go “behind the curtain”.

There are however some moments of what seem to be compassion with respect to the abundant rules regarding who may and who may not partake of food offerings. Whereas no lay person or hired laborer of a priest could partake, the slave (or “property”) of a priest could partake, as could the widowed or divorced childless daughter of the priest (as long as she was living back in Dad’s house). If by mistake a commoner partook of the priest’s food, he must pay it back with a 20% penalty assessed on top in a “sacred donation”.

To me, growing up in what I viewed to be a “small d” democratic Jewish world, I see all of these

rules as a way to stack the deck in favor of the Kohanim. They are a way to codify and cement class distinctions and to set apart one group above all others for eternity.

Emor goes on to enumerate the dates for and ways of observance for the “fixed” and “set times” of worship, prayer and reverence. They include Shabbat, Passover, Shavot, Rosh Hashannah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot.

It finishes up with a rather colorful and brutal story of the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father who blasphemed G-d. When G-d spoke to Moses about the penalty for the “half-Israelite”, G-d condemned the man to death by stoning and further commanded that the whole community “stranger or citizen stone him”

I was taken aback by the very next line; “If anyone kills a human being, he shall be put to death”. Did G-d not just command the entire community to kill the half-Israelite, or , was the half-Israelite not a human being?

After codifying the rarified treatment to be accorded to the Kohanim, this last section in addition to an earlier passage stating that “when a daughter of a priest defiles herself through harlotry, it is her father whom she defiles; she shall be put to the fire” brought to mind the modus operandi and actions of certain groups in the middle east today.

Are not the Taliban, ISIS, Al Qaeda and others in the 21st century maintaining a dogmatic interpretation of their own sacred religious text? One in which their fighters are accorded special privileges? One where people are being stoned and killed by burning?

How fortunate it is that we have evolved as a people. That (at least in settings of egalitarian observance like our own) we no longer find the need to set people apart because of lineage or disability or even when people voice their right to free speech.

I am also thankful that we no longer adhere to the last verses in Emor: “If anyone maims his fellow, as he has done, so shall it be done to him; fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth”.

How many maimed, blind and broken toothless people there would be in this world if we followed these verses word for word!

As our year winds down to summer, a time when we usually turn our thoughts to vacations and enjoyment of the outdoors, we have the holiday of Shavuot—a harvest festival, and a commemoration of the giving of the torah to Israel. Traditionally, we celebrate Shavuot by abstaining from work, going to synagogue, eating dairy --- and reading the Book of Ruth.

It seems very appropriate to read the Book of Ruth at the time of celebrating the receipt of the Torah and our awakening as Jews. While G-d gave the Torah to the people of Israel, we are a universal religion, not one limited to genetics or birth. Those to whom Judaism speaks are welcome to join with us. Ruth was a convert to Judaism—a Jew by choice. Jews by choice, like Ruth, have contributed mightily to our our religion. Judaism has always been culturally diverse because of the nature of the diaspora, and the

inclusion of Jews by choice has also enhanced Judaism and its cultural diversity. I am proud to say that at Sisterhood we have been celebrating Jewish diversity over the years, and I am hoping that next year we will continue to do so.

At Shavuot, remembering Ruth and her commitment to the Jewish people, one also must take note of the fact that we are all Jews by choice at this time in history. We are lucky to live in a time and place when no one is forcing us to live in a certain area, or dress a certain way, or restricting our occupations or even killing us because we are Jews. If we want to eschew Judaism, we can. But we don’t --instead, we celebrate Shavuot, eat cheesecake and once again affirm that we are Jews. Hag Sameach.

Men’s Club With Passover behind us and with abundant

Matzah remaining; we can eagerly anticipate the next Pilgrimage Holiday known as “The Feast of Weeks” (aka; Shavuot). It commemorates the revelation of the Torah on Mt Sinai and is associated with the grain harvest. As with many Jewish holidays, Shavuot is customarily accompanied by certain ritualistic behaviors and actions; most notably intense studying of the Torah and the recitation of “The Book of Ruth” which highlights one woman’s journey to join the Jewish religion and accept the Torah.

The work Shavuot literally means “weeks” and the initiation of this holiday coincides with completing the counting of the Omer which began on the second day of Passover. Conclusion of this 7 week episode marks the end of the grain harvest yet metaphorically represents a period commencing with the Hebrew’s freedom from Pharaoh in Egypt and culminating with receipt of the Torah on Mt Sinai.

Although Shavuot marks the end of the academic (or Hebrew School) calendar; the synagogue continues to function albeit in less obvious ways. The various synagogue components are already planning next year’s activities. Perhaps most notable is the Membership Committee’s upcoming “friendraiser” event. To survive in an era of

declining involvement in Conservative Judaism; First Hebrew Congregation must strive to maintain current membership while aiming to simultaneously attract new members. To be sure; a difficult yet necessary task for the Membership Committee. We applaud their efforts and wish them continued success toward achieving that lofty goal.

Along the same theme; we must generate enough interest in Synagogue events to attract more “active” members; namely those individuals who will step up and actively participate in planning events, serving on committees, and fulfilling the mission of First Hebrew Congregation.

After a brief summer hiatus, the Men’s Club will continue to meet monthly (always accompanied by breakfast) to socialize and plan future events. By the time you receive this newsletter; the Men’s Club Shabbat and annual FHC BBQ will be history and hopefully well attended and enjoyed by all who attended. In the Conservative movement, there is power in numbers and I anticipate more cooperative ventures with the other local Conservative Men’s Club chapters throughout Northern Westchester. Let’s all take an active interest in helping First Hebrew Congregation flourish and grow next year. Have a wonderful Shavuot.

Bingo How many people does it take run a Bingo game? For the Bingo game to run smoothly Bingo needs at least 11 people. With less people it becomes arduous for those who are there. Yes, Bingo has a dedicated group of regulars some come at five p.m. and stay till ten p.m. The regulars come to most of the forty five games Bingo has. They enjoy the night out and are proud that they raise $30,000 for FHC. Bingo doesn’t have enough regulars so FHC has the “list.” The congregants from list fill the gap of regulars to the amount of people Bingo needs for a night. We find that when congregants work Bingo some realize they like the experience and that’s how congregants have become regulars. If we can’t continue to run Bingo the $30,000 raised would have to be spread among the members and that would be an increase of $450 per unit. An increase of that size would be a difficult burden to many members. If you are coming to Bingo from the list we need you at 6:30 pm but whenever you show up will be appreciated. The surcharge of $200 for singles and $400 for couples is an added inducement but it is the workers we really need. If you can’t come on your day please, please find a replacement. Thanks in advance for your support, The Bingo Regulars.

Let Everyone Know How Proud We are of Our Children! The Board of Education would like to honor our wonderful Bar/Bat Mitzvah students in a special way!

We would like each student to submit a brief biography (5-7 sentences) to be placed in the synagogue bulletin. The biography could include information such as their Bar/BatMitzvah date, grade, school, outside interests, and should include a short description about his/her service project; you may also include a photograph if you like. The responsibility to write and submit this information belongs to the family of the child. Please do not cause unnecessary disappointment for your children when they don’t see their names in the bulletin with their classmates. The biography must be submitted to the editor SIX WEEKS prior to the first day of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah month to ensure placement in a timely fashion. Any articles sent after that time will be placed in the next bulletin, which may be after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date. Please submit the biography to the bulletin at bulletin@ FirstHebrew.org or you can mail or fax to the FHC office.
