We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and fun for all. We have many events early in the term and also auditions and trials for extracurricular activities offered at our school. Our Years 3-6 swimming carnival is on Wednesday 12 February (Week 3). Our parent/teacher meet and connect evening is in Week 4 on Wednesday 19 February, with ESI (Kindergarten) from 4:00-4:30pm, Stage 1 from 4:30-5:00pm, Stage 2 from 5:00-5:30pm and Stage 3 from 5:30-6:30pm. A separate note with venues and times will follow shortly. KINDERGARTEN 2020 Welcome to all of our new parents and to our wonderful Kindergarten children who have began their school journey. We are so excited to welcome you all and will ensure that we do everything we can to make your childs transition to school and learning a very positive experience. We all look forward to working with all our parents during this time. CLASS FORMATIONS At the start of the year students are placed into temporary classes. They will remain in these temporary classes until our numbers are finalised and we can place the students into permanent classes. This takes a few days as we are still getting new enrolments every day. Class structure and our staffing entitlement is determined by numbers of students. The school will now be able to form 27 classes. The current student numbers and the teaching allocations has meant composite classes including a ‘cross stage’ composite class (e.g. Year 2/3) have been formed. This has been common practice at our school. All teachers are able to differentiate the learning for students and provide positive educational outcomes. The NSW curriculum (and Australian curriculum) is based on Stages. On Friday all Year 1-6 classes will be finalised with students in their permanent classes on Monday. Please be happy for your child when he/she informs you of the class they are in. As a staff we put in many hours to ensure your child is in the best possible class and learning environment for his/her needs. Our teachers are amazing and our learning programs ensure there are many opportunities for classes to come together and learn together. Sometimes children are separated for their own benefit, on the advice and knowledge of many teachers. So please be aware that we are putting your child and his/her learning and social skills at the forefront of our decisions. We welcome a number of new teachers to our fabulous staff for 2020. Mrs Patricia Lindsay is one of our
Deputy Principals, Miss Christina Doxaras will be teaching a Year 2 class and Mr Oliver Selby for four days
RFF and on class for one day. We know they will bring new skills to our staff and we look forward to working
with them.
SCHOOL KISS N DROP ZONE
Our KISS N DROP ZONE provides a safe environment for our parents to drop off and collect children from
school by car. There are some rules that are in place to ensure a smooth process. These are:
• cars are to remain in the zone for only two minutes
• drivers remain in their vehicles at all times
• drivers refrain from blocking the traffic flow on Huon Avenue
• drivers refrain from overtaking vehicles while waiting in the queue
• students enter and exit the car on the kerb side of the road
• cars need to keep moving forward towards the group of students supervised by the teacher
• students cannot enter cars parked near the pedestrian crossing and school gates
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS AREA IS REGULARLY MONITORED BY PARKING RANGERS AND THE POLICE. FINES HAVE BEEN ISSUED IN PREVIOUS YEARS.
MOBILE PHONES
It is school policy that students are to sign-in mobile phones at the office on arrival at school. Mobile
phones are not to be kept in school bags or with the student. They are a source of distraction and there is
no need for them during school hours. Students can sign them out at 2.55pm.

LIBRARY NEWS
* Library borrowing will begin when classes are confirmed.
* During the first half of lunch each day, the library is open to students from
Years 1 to 6. The students can browse, read, draw or do any other quiet
activity. The computer lab is not available yet.
* Issue 1 Book Club flyers go home this week. There is always a great
selection for primary school aged students, suitable for your own family or for gifts.
Most items are discounted and in addition the school does receive rewards to add resources to
use with your students.You now have the option to pay online through the Linked Online
Ordering & Payment Platform (LOOP). Instructions on how to order through LOOP are inside
the back page of this issue. Alternatively, put your completed order form and money into an
envelope with your child’s name and deposit them into the white Book Club box in the office foyer.
Please use the correct change if paying by cash. Closing date for Issue 1 is Friday 14th February.
When the orders arrive at school they will be distributed to your student In their classroom. *Premier’s Reading Challenge 2020 will begin in March.

Paper & Equipment Levy for 2020 The levy for 2020 is $40 per student or $80 per family (if you have two or more children attending the school). Payment can be made online or at the office. A note will be sent home to each family next week with a Statement of Accounts.
MONEY SENT TO OFFICE Due to an overwhelming amount of money coming in, could you please send the cash payment for
the activity in a sealed envelope with Student Name and Class and payment for activity.
Also, please make sure that money for Canteen and P&C fundraising are in a separate envelope
as this money is not processed by the office.
DEBATING TEAM Holsworthy Public school has entered into the 2020 Premier’s Debating Challenge. This is an opportunity for Stage 3 students to further develop their public speaking skills whilst being in a situation requiring them to think quickly. Students who expressed interest in joining the Holsworthy Public School Debating Team will audition over the next week and two teams will be created to represent our school.
HOLSWORTHY STUDENT PARLIAMENT
The opening ceremony of our student parliament for 2020 will be held on Wednesday 4 March,
commencing at 9:00am in the school hall. The induction of the school Prime Ministers and
Ministers for 2020 will be held at this ceremony.

HOLSWORTHY PUBLIC SCHOOL EAL/D PROGRAM The English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) Program at Holsworthy Public School supports students from language backgrounds other than English assisting in the development of skills necessary to achieve their potential. We aim to provide experiences to develop student’s knowledge, communication skills and awareness of community and their responsibility towards it. The EAL/D program assists students to learn English and to learn through English. We support students in accessing language across the curriculum to develop each student’s English language skills by providing focused support. These sessions of support may occur within the classroom environment, or through small group or individual withdrawal. Through these sessions the EAL/D teacher and classroom teacher work together to: support the Australian curriculum; promote oral language and phonemic awareness; improve writing and spelling skills; focus on developing literacy skills; focus on enhancing reading and comprehension skills; and provide focused support in the completion of specific class tasks, eg preparing for an oral presentation.
EAL/D Selection EAL/D students may include students:
i. recently arrived in Australia with a home language other than English;
ii. born in Australia but speak another language or dialect at home;
iii. born in Australia but have been educated in another language or country;
iv. of refugee background;

HOME READING Our school home reading program for students from Years 1-6 begins Monday 10 February. Students are expected to read for 10-15 minutes each school night and log this reading into their blue ‘Home Reading Record’ book. Parents are asked to support the program by listening to their child read EVERY night and signing their home reading record. Each day students will take home a levelled home reader (level is determined by their classroom teacher) however primary students that have read all levelled texts will begin to read novels as determined by their classroom teacher. A separate note explaining the program in more detail will follow.
SPORT
PRIMARY SWIMMING CARNIVAL
The 3-6 swimming carnival will be held on Wednesday 12 February, Week 3 Term 1, at Whitlam Leisure Centre. All students in Years 3-6 are expected to attend this carnival. On the day there will be competitive races as well as novelty events. Students have received their permission note and need to return it to school with their money by Monday 10 February 2020. All students must travel to the carnival by bus with their class.
ONLY students in Year 2 who will turn 8 in 2020 and can competently and confidently swim at least 50 metres are eligible to attend.
Parents are welcome to come as spectators to the carnival. Please note that the pool will charge a spectator entry fee of $3.50 for admission to the pool. The carnival will aim to begin by 9:15am.
Throughout the year children with talent in their selected sport will have the opportunity to trial for Liverpool
Zone Representative teams.
The trials are held after school hours at different venues and it is the responsibility of the family to transport
the child to and from the venue. Trials are encouraged for children in Years 5 and 6 but not limited to that
age range depending on skill level.
At times there may be a limit to the number of children able to trial. In this case discussions will be made
with the school PSSA coach and sports organisers as to the children’s eligibility to trial.

SUMMER PSSA TRIALS
Our Summer PSSA trials were held today Wednesday 5 February and will also be held on Friday
the 7 February (weather permitting). Please ensure all 3-6 students wear sports shoes on these
days.
Students will be expected to choose one sport from the following list:
• Girls T-ball/Softball
• Boys T-ball/Softball
• Oz Tag
• Newcombeball
• AFL
• Cricket
Students who are successful in making a PSSA team will be notified by Week 3. Our Summer
PSSA competition will begin Friday Week 4.
How parents can help with homework Parents can:
• see that children are bringing homework home regularly and ensure it is returned on time.
• help to provide a regular time and place where children can work free from interruption.
• be available to hear reading and briefly test spelling words or tables.
• supervise homework so that good presentation and understanding is achieved.
• provide substantial help and input, as parent modelling and correction is invaluable. Also allow children to articulate and write ideas that have been worked out through parent assistance and research.
• help by communicating to the class teacher quickly about any concerns they have regarding homework.
• alert the school of any situation which may need consideration when homework is being set or corrected.

Homework starts Week 3 and includes home reading. Homework is often revision of what was covered in class. As well as regular weekly homework, your child may have assessments such as assignments or projects with due dates. A key to success is being organised.
Students in Years 3 to 6 work more independently. A lot of homework will be in English, mathematics, history and geography. However, it can be set from all areas of the curriculum.
HOMEWORK TIPS
These tips are relevant for all students Kindergarten to Year 12.
• Ask your child about their homework, know what they are learning about and when assignments are due.
• Use our term assessment planner to record when assignments are due, and exams scheduled. This will help your child prepare in advance. Make ‘to-do’ lists to spread out the workload.
• Get into a routine of doing homework at a set time, ideally a little each day. • Have a set place where children can do their homework, with the equipment they’ll need – pens and
pencils, highlighters, scissors, glue, scrap paper, ruler, calculator, printing paper, computer and internet access, a printer.
• If there’s no set homework, encourage your child to do some reading. For younger children, it’s great for them to read aloud to you. For older ones, ask them to tell you about what they have read. For more help with reading and comprehension, read our English tips page.
• Don’t jump in and give answers, homework is about helping children become independent learners. • Encourage your child to start assignments as soon as they receive them – this will reduce any night-
before stress. • Your child needs to do their own projects and assignments. There’s no point submitting work done by
anyone other than the student. Teachers need to know what students can do independently – it’s the best way for planning lessons and additional support, if required.
• Turn off TVs, mobiles and other devices so there are no disruptions. • If your child is having difficulty with their homework, contact their class teacher for help. • For help understanding terms used in English, visit English A to Z. • For help understanding terms used in mathematics, visit Maths A to Z.
