The disease is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted through the bite of a tiny mosquito. Through coordinated efforts in prevention, education and treatment, malaria was wiped out in the United States by 1950. The United Methodist Church has partnered with powerful allies such as the United Nations Foundation, the Gates Foundation and the NBA to wipe out malaria in Africa in our generation. Issue: #12 June 18, 2010

From Pastor Andy

The United Methodist Connection Making a Difference The interconnected nature of the United Methodist Church is truly a distinctive feature of our denomination and when fully harnessed can make for modern day miracles.

Every June, clergy and lay delegates from every congregation in the North Texas Conference gather

to form the Annual Conference. At this annual meeting, we worship together, make plans for ministry together, and enjoy fellowship together. We connect in meaningful and powerful ways.

For me, the most exciting news to come out of the Annual Conference meeting, held this year in Wichita Falls from June 6-8, was the United Methodist Church's commitment to eradicate malaria from the African continent. The campaign is called, "Imagine No Malaria." Every 30 seconds, an innocent child in Africa dies of malaria. Only one in five children in Africa live to see their fifth birthday in large part due to this devastating disease. Left untreated, malaria's flu-like symptoms lead to convulsions, organ failure and countless unnecessary deaths.

But, malaria is preventable. Imagine...no malaria. This may seem like an insurmountable task, but I believe it is possible - because of the power of God but also because of the power of our connection.

The United Methodist Church is growing rapidly in Africa. Our denomination provides a vast network of churches, hospitals and clinics on the ground to engage in this fight. Our denomination in the United States is still 11 million

people strong. We also bring something unique and essential to the table - a will to see those who suffer experience health and wholeness that is grounded in our faith. As followers of Jesus, we believe we are called to have compassion on the sick. We believe that we are called to put our love in action, becoming doers of the word and not hearers only. We believe that when we minister to the poor, it is the holiest of work.

On Sunday, July 4th - near the conclusion of our Faith and Futbol sermon series which is throwing a spotlight on Africa - our communion offering will go to support Imagine No Malaria. I encourage you to learn more about this cause by checking out www.zapmalaria.com. Together, as United Methodists, we can do amazing things for the glory of God!

Breakfast Club: Unfashionable Join this group of early risers for breakfast and discussion of a new provocative book called Unfashionable written by Tullian Tchividjian - Pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, a visiting professor of theology at Reformed Theological Seminary, and a grandson of Billy and Ruth Graham. One of the comments written about Unfashionable says that "I love reading books that challenge the way I think. Unfashionable goes beyond that. It's counter-intuitive. It's counter-cultural. And it's a must-read for those brave enough to really follow in the footsteps of Jesus." Contact Gary Feltner [email protected] if you'd like to join this group for breakfast and what promises to be a VERY interesting discussion beginning Monday, July 12.

Adult Education

Although we just 'graduated' about 40 adults who participated in a Disciple Bible Study that began last fall, plans are already underway for next fall's classes. Maybe you've heard about Disciple classes or know someone who has taken one; or maybe you have taken Disciple I and are ready for your next class........what can you do while you contemplate this?

First, please pray and be attentive to the movement of the Spirit and discern through the summer if God is calling you to join a class and embark on a journey that will bring you closer to God as well as other members of Holy Covenant. DBS groups that begin as strangers become a new 'small group family' by the end of the Study and are sad that their 32 weeks together have ended. Just ask someone who's taken a class what their experience has been like.

Second, mark your calendar for the Disciple Bible Study 'kick off & potluck' on Friday, August 20 at 6:00 pm that will feature Rev. Dr. Alyce McKenzie - Professor of Homiletics at Perkins School of Theology. Rev. McKenzie will speak about the life-giving and transformational journey of Bible study and will preside over a Holy Communion service. To learn more about Rev. McKenzie, visit http://www.smu.edu/Perkins/FacultyAcademics/DirectoryList/McKenzie.aspx. Have you ever taken a DBS class? You're invited to this kickoff & potluck! Are you 'considering' participating in a class beginning this fall? YOU are invited, too!! Join us as we feast and celebrate together at this wonderful event on August 20 in the Covenant Center. Prior to the DBS kick off, we'll have a Bible sale all morning on July 25 and after you have your new Bible - Pastor Andy will lead a 4-week "Bible 101" class beginning August 1 during the 9:45 Sunday school hour. The Disciple Bible Study classes will begin meeting the week of August 29 with sign ups beginning Sunday, August 8.

Last year as a congregation, we prayed for 5 classes and God gathered students and teachers for 5 classes. Are we bold enough in our desire to continue our study of God's Word to pray this year for SIX??????

Please ask Gary Feltner [email protected], Mark Millar [email protected] or Pastor Wendy [email protected] ANY question you may have about Disciple Bible Study and we'll be more than happy to answer.
