FIRST SCRIPTURE READING | Acts 2:1-21  Malaya Gaboury, reader

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,  and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

Page 3: HOLY EUCHARIST RITE II · 2020-05-31 · HOLY EUCHARIST RITE II ... When I think about the Lord How He saved me, how He raised me How He filled me with the Holy Ghost ... life to

and your young men shall see visions,  and your old men shall dream dreams.  Even upon my slaves, both men and women,  in those days I will pour out my Spirit;  and they shall prophesy.  And I will show portents in the heaven above  and signs on the earth below,  blood, and fire, and smoky mist.    The sun shall be turned to darkness  and the moon to blood,  before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.

Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

THE PSALM | Psalm 104:25-35, 37 Benedic, anima mea

The Reader and the People pray responsively

O Lord, how manifold are your works!   in wisdom you have made them all;  the earth is full of your creatures.  Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number,   creatures both small and great.  There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan,   which you have made for the sport of it.  All of them look to you   to give them their food in due season.

You give it to them; they gather it;   you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

You hide your face, and they are terrified;   you take away their breath,  and they die and return to their dust.

Page 4: HOLY EUCHARIST RITE II · 2020-05-31 · HOLY EUCHARIST RITE II ... When I think about the Lord How He saved me, how He raised me How He filled me with the Holy Ghost ... life to

You send forth your Spirit, and they are created;   and so you renew the face of the earth.  May the glory of the Lord endure for ever;   may the Lord rejoice in all his works.  He looks at the earth and it trembles;   he touches the mountains and they smoke.  I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;   I will praise my God while I have my being.

May these words of mine please him;   I will rejoice in the Lord.  Bless the Lord, O my soul.   Hallelujah!     GRADUAL HYMN | “Holy Spirit Come”

THE READING OF THE GOSPEL | John 20:19-23   Minister The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John People  Glory to you, Lord Christ.     When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where

the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and

said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the

disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the

Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to

them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you

retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Minister The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.     SERMON | “Born of the Spirit” The Rev. Nathaniel Jung-Chul Lee    Today is the Feast of the Pentecost. On Pentecost, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the birth of the Christian church. Today, I want to name three ways in which we need to be born again by the spirit, and raised to new life in a new church.

Please stand.  THE NICENE CREED    We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,  the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation   he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit   he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,   and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;   he suffered death and was buried.   On the third day he rose again   in accordance with the Scriptures;   he ascended into heaven   and is seated at the right hand of the Father.   He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,   and his kingdom will have no end.  We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A Prayer for the Power of the Spirit Among the People of God (to be said this Pentecostas a joint prayer between Episcopalians and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America)  God of all power and love, we give thanks for your unfailing presence and the hope you provide in times of uncertainty and loss. Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us your holy fire. Revive us to live as Christ’s body in the world: a people who pray, worship, learn, break bread, share life, heal neighbors, bear good news, seek justice, rest and grow in the Spirit. Wherever and however we gather, unite us in common prayer and send us in common mission, that we and the whole creation might be restored and renewed, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.    CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION   Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

A time of silence may be kept.  Celebrant and People  Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.  For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.  Celebrant   Almighty God, our heavenly Father, have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you

from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Adapted from Prophetic Lament: A Call for Justice in Troubled Time, by Soong-Chan Rah  “In the book of Lamentations, the cry for justice occurs in the public setting. Lament is not private and personal. It is corporate and public.” Soong-Chan Rah  Remember, Lord, what happened to Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd; look and see the disgraceful way they treated their bodies.

Our inheritance of the image of God in every human being has been co-opted and denied by others.

The families of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd have lost their loved ones, widowed mothers grieve their dead children.

We must scrap for our basic human rights (the right to breath); our basic needs have a great price.

Corrupt officers pursue us and their knees on our necks; we are weary and we find no rest.

We submit to uncaring government officials and to big business to get enough bread.

Our ancestors sinned the great sin of instituting slavery; they are no more -- but we bear their shame.

The system of slavery and institutionalized racism ruled over us, and there is no one to free us from their hands.

We get bread (or jog in our neighborhoods) at the risk of our lives because of the guns on the streets.

George Floyd is down on the street, his body crying out for air.

Women have been violated throughout our nation's history; black women raped by white slave owners on the plantations.

Noble black men have been hung, lynched and gunned down. elders and spokesmen are shown no respect.

Young men can't find work because of unjustly applied laws. Unjustly incarcerated because of staggering negative expectations.

The elder statesmen and civil rights leaders have been assassinated; young people who speak out their protest through music are silenced.

Trust in our ultimate triumph has diminished; our triumphant proclamation of victory has turned to a funeral dirge.

Our sense of exceptionalism has been exposed. Woe to us, for we have sinned.

Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim

For our cities lie desolate with predatory lenders and gentrifiers prowling over them.

You, LORD, reign forever;

your throne endures from generation to generation.

Why do you always forget us?

Why do you forsake us for so long?

Restore us to yourself, Lord, that we may return;

renew as that we may find a new way forward

unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.

 DOXOLOGY

MUSIC: “Doxology” (Servant’s Mass), Brian Milner.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING  The Lord be with you.  And also with you.   Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.   Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give thanks and praise.   It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit came down on this day from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith, and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

 SANCTUS

MUSIC: “Sanctus” (Servant’s Mass), Brian Milner.   We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us

in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the

prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you

sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you

have brought us out of errorinto truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a

perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given

thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body,

which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

13

Page 14: HOLY EUCHARIST RITE II · 2020-05-31 · HOLY EUCHARIST RITE II ... When I think about the Lord How He saved me, how He raised me How He filled me with the Holy Ghost ... life to

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and

said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you

and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance

of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

 Celebrant and People

We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you,

from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the

Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your

Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy

Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to

that heavenly country where, with St. Michael and all the Angels, and all your saints, we may

enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the

firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours,

Almighty Father, now and forever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,   THE LORD’S PRAYER  Our Father, who art in heaven,  hallowed be thy Name,  thy kingdom come,  thy will be done,  on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

14

And forgive us our trespasses,  as we forgive those  who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,  but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,  and the power, and the glory,  for ever and ever. Amen.   THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD  Celebrant Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.  People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!  Celebrant  The Gifts of God for the People of God.

Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you,  and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

PRAYER FOR “SPIRITUAL COMMUNION”  Lord Jesus Christ, with the faithful at every altar of your Church - and especially those at the                                   table of All Angels Church - where your death and passion are pleaded before the Father, I                                 desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving; I present to you my soul and body with the                                 heartfelt wish that I may be ever united to you. And since I cannot now receive you                                 sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you with all the                                   affections of my soul. Let nothing ever separate me from you. Let me live and die in your                                   love.  O God our Father, whose Son our Lord Jesus Christ gave, in this wonderful Sacrament, a                               memorial of his passion: Grant that we might so cherish the sacred mysteries of his Body and                                 Blood, that we may ever perceive within ourselves the fruit of his redemption; who lives and                               reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (adapted from BCP 201)
